Hawke stumbled and fell on a sword, dead. No more info required.
As sardonic as this seems, I agree. Hawke is a footnote of history. His wrap up should be "Thus perished Hawke of Kirkwall." No wrap up needed.
Now... Varric? And to some extent, some of the other companions... I'd like to see what happened to him (them).

This is actually pretty much the setup I've been thinking of. At some point in DA3, the new PC can encounter Varric, who offers to tell the story of what happened to Hawke, if the player wants to hear it. But instead of simply having Varric talk, they could do a neat callback to the framed narrative by allowing us to play as Hawke during the story. It could be about the length of moderate-to-decently-sized quest, and take things into account such as whether you sided with the mages or Templars and who your companions were. Potentially the player could have the chance to decide what happens with Hawke at the end. Most Definitely Sane wrote...
Maybe we see Varric in a tavern, and we get an option to talk about the legend of Hawke?
Then Varric tells you an unbelievable end and you can push the topic a bit more, and then Varric tells the story of the last adventure he had with Hawke.
I like this idea because it allows for Varric to make an appearance by acting in his ideal role as storyteller, and allows for logical cameos from the other DA2 companions. Rather than a convenient "Oh, Fenris, Isabela, and Aveline all wound up in Orlais for some reason," they would be (potentially) included in the flashback story. This would also allow for the player's DA2 choices to be recognized and given a bit of followup and closure, while not taking focus away from the main story of DA3 for too long. And if someone really doesn't care what happened to Hawke, they can just tell Varric they don't want to hear the story right now.
This is some good **** right here, screw what I suggested.

As long as they don't change the art style again, they should be able to import your Hawke's appearance just fine. They can use your major choices (pro-mage or pro-templar) to give them their stance - if its just a cameo, it could be whose side you find them supporting, or if they end up as a party member, it would alter their approval/disapproval of your actions. Then they can flavor her dialog to have whichever tone you usually used in DA2 - diplomatic, witty, or aggressive.

I get the impression the story is building up to somewhere big, and I for one am content to wait and see. For me, there are bigger, worthier mysteries in Thedas than the fate of my old player characters. And unless that fate ties into those bigger questions, I'm happy not to know it.

I like the 'meet Varric and hear rumours of Hawke' idea, or just hear stuff about Hawke being either abroad or helping the mages/templars with whatever. Even running because one of my femHawke's romanced a certain renegade mage. My Warden? If I hear nothing of her, then she's dead because her calling came.
Or y'know, got eaten by Flemeth or something.

Whether in this game or the next, Morrigan needs protection for traveling to protect her son. (And whether you scream that Morrigan isn't supposed to have a son in your story, that's irrelevant because she has always been on a mission for this purpose, and, as ME series shows, it doesn't matter what you choose, Bioware writes around this with different characters playing their parts...or Morrigan slept with Riodan anyway regardless of the low probability of it working because of the progression of his taint).
You get to play your Hawk through this sequence of traveling in the game and it comes down to the only recourse of the party is to flee from overwhelming odds, but Hawke has to pull a Halo Reach last stand. You'll get to fight as long as your fighting skills and potions allow but the end comes for Hawke regardless. The party escapes, Hawke sacrifices himself for the cause.
Of course, enough interaction with Hawke and Morrigan's plan has to occur to give Hawke a reason to sacrifice himself.
OR.....
In the spirit of player's choice, you can have your Hawke choose not sacrifice himself nobly, and Morrigan without the knowledge to the rest of the party sacrifices Hawke anyway.

My idea on how to give closure to Hawke.......
mHawke or femHawke is featured in the first 15 minutes of the game. They save your character or something.
The last thing you see Hawke leaving alone or meeting up with their love interest and they disappear down a road.
That would be sweet. <3

I know your the Thread Creator, but at least accept that other people have the right to have a different opinion than yours. There's no point in trying to provoke a flame war with the actual fans of Hawke & his crew.
Edit: I'm pretty sure mods will agree with me when I say a lot of members here only want to start trouble. I hate that.
