ANNOUNCING: The Return of NeverwinterConnections.com
#1
Posté 20 juin 2012 - 01:55
Fellow NeverwinterNights Enthusiasts, PLAYERs, DMs, Builders and Admins
of NWN1 and NWN2, it is with great pleasure that I announce the
re-opening of neverwinterconnections.com
This is PHASE ONE - ready for a full public test. This PHASE ONE release
includes MEMBER LOGIN, MEMBER PROFILE TOOLS, SERVER CREATE/EDIT, EVENT
SCHEDULING AND SIGN-UP. We ask all you NWC Members to please visit neverwinterconnections.com
and login. Use the available services there to participate in scheduled
events and/or schedule some of your own. While we tested the new NWC as
much as we could (with limited availability of hardware locally to us,
we enlisted a fine group of BETA TESTERS - and have thus far found the
new NWC design robust and useful. Still, we have not been able to test
with all hardware, operating system and browser combinations - so
please, if you should spy something that looks amiss, take a screenie
(screen capture) and send it to us along with any narrative, specify
your operating system and browser too in your message. You can contact
me via this forum and I'll share my email address in response to your
inquiry so you can send me the screenies and such. WE NEED YOUR HELP to
find any errors that may remain in the PHASE ONE features. Please take
some time to login and have a look at the NEW DESIGN -
neverwinterConnections.com awaits, and the re-build team welcomes your
feedback.
While we allow NWC Members to access the features of PHASE ONE online,
Eriniel and I will be working to complete material for the PHASE TWO
release. PHASE TWO will include FORUMS, NEWS, HALL OF FAME, and more.
The re-build team.[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wizard.png[/smilie]

then it gave me the error log in page and told me to try again (but only gave a name login box, not a name and password box).
i clicked on the "sign up now link" and it told me it couldn't detect my timezone and that the manual selection was not implemented yet.

In short, if you did not have an account before, you will be able to make one tomorrow, if you have an account already, login and have a look. My apologies for the confusion to new members - we'll get this modified later today.

I take it you did sign in with an account? Or did it get your time zone without a login?

The old data appears to be in good shape. Very nice work. You and Eriniel (and whoever else worked on this) deserve a round on the house.
I was able to sign in with my old account, and create a new game. It had my previous settings. I put the word out to my players. We'll see how it works for sign up etc....
http://neverwinterco...w_game&id=32907
Stuff to look at:.
- The time is a little wonky and seems to change around if you edit the page. I think it converts from your time zone to GMT, then uses the GMT time as your time when you edit etc.... Not sure. But take a look.
- I hope it doesn't email your dms everytime you edit the game.
- In the calendar, the current day is brightly highlighted as yellow, while the game day is greyed out. I think this should be reversed.
- The link color (perhaps this is a visited link) is the same color as the background. Links should always contrast with the background. This is more important than visited and unvisited links being differentiated (which is of little to no value for a site like this)
- The kind of game played displays larger than the name of the game. This should be reversed - at least. The type of game should be relatively small, and the name of the game should read as a heading.
- Other formatting could be improved, but its no biggee at this time. (If you need help with this, send me a PM and I'll see if I can spare some time to do some tweaking to your files (I assume this is a LAMP setup))

*bows* I thank you for the kind words and I will pass this on to Eriniel - it was just the two of us working the code, she did the entire back-end (she is honestly, the most amazing person and deserving of the community gratitude most of all) - I handled the CSS, HTML and marketing/engines aspects.
If you and the rest of the visitors would be so kind as to just keep the reports of any perceived 'strangeness' we will handle the code edits BUT THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND OFFER OF HELP - what remains mostly (I think) are getting as many operating system/browser combos on it as possible, and to get the feedback from the eyeballs behind them.
To answer your question, yes, it was done entirely in a LAMP setup (to ensure that any future migration would be easy and largely cost free).
Please keep the feedback flowing in, we much appreciate your time and effort to put a last bit of polish on our beloved NWC!!!

I'll provide more feedback the next time I get a chance to play with it. Maybe I'll give you a rough mockup of how I would prefer the Scheduled game to read. Its a little rough now and could use some polish.
[edit]
Forgot to mention the real reason for my post...
a player was able to sign up and so that appears to be working well.

Yet my scheduled game page says time is listed in GMT and yet the time is identical to what I entered for my own timezone. My time zone is GMT-8.
My preferences are correctly set to GMT-8.
Example from edit game page:
Please enter your local time, not GMT.
Unless our systems misread your location,
your current time is:
YYYY MM DD MM YYYY
2012:Jun:21:18:51 UTC
I.P Address of Server
My local time is 11:51am.

If you are a regular on a NWN server, WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are in need of a few screen captures from NWN 2 to be featured on NeverwinterConnections.com - what we need:
Group PC images that include
A dwarf
An elf
A gnome
A human
A half-orc
The screenie should be staged to have all PCs facing generally toward the "4th wall" (e.g. looking out at the viewer)... no helmets so we can see the face and thereby KNOW the race better.
The need is rather urgent so the sooner you can make and send us the screen captures the better. MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
PM me to let me know you have images for me and I'll PM you my email addy to send them.
Be well. Game on!

Karvon, after setting the time zone, did you log out and log back? What results were shown when you log back in the time zone?
Many thanks.

Yeah, I tried that. The last report was after doing that.

On the
http://neverwinterco...de=find_server#
Find a Server page, it lists 130 pages of servers
130??
I suspect alot of those are years old.
Perhaps some automatic pruning is in order?
You can use a php script to send a server status request to the connection details for each server.
If it is offline - either hide it from the search results, or remove from database.
It might be the most efficient way of pruning all the old servers, while retaining ones that have genuinely not changed IP Address.
Too much information 'can' be a bad thing - especially if it is out of date.
Note - I dont recommend doing the server status query as part of your website, instead have a cronjob running in the background, that will work its way through the database, one server at a time, maybe once a minute etc
That way, its not taxxing on your website, and you still end up with a clean up to date server list.

Urk, we will be adding an OPTION in member preferences section to opt-in to our 'social networking' version - activating this will insert facebook, google and other link/icons on the pages offered, but by default we will not be offering these on anyone's pages. The reason we will make it opt-in is that just having those links on your page means that the related site is TRACKING EVERYONE WHO LOADS YOUR PAGES. I'm a big fan of privacy so we make being tracked (and seeing the facebook, google, etc links) a choice the member must make for themselves. Maybe you'd be kind enough to gather the code snippets for those on our behalf URK? I don't visit any of those sites so don't have access to it atm.

When you go to My Scheduled Games. At the bottom of the calendar is a synopsis of your games. The number of players is bugged.
Your Events For 30th June 2012, Times in GMT
EventStart TimeEnd TimeDM'ing or Playing?# of players
In Pursuit of the Frogmen18:0021:00HOST DM10 of 6deleteInvite Another
I have three players and myself "signed up" on NWC. It looks like that number was added to my max number of players to get the 10of6 figure.
"Preferences" is misspelled throughout the site as "My Preferances"
I'm not sure if the messages work. I've got a new player I am trying to communicate with and have sent a message, but got nothing back. I suspect that messages are not being forwarded to your email address.
Also, when I log in for the first time, it always tells me that I entered the wrong information, but then I enter the same name and password a second time, and it lets me in. For awhile I thought I was making a mistake, but the consistency of the error suggests to me that something else is going on.
Time is still changing when I edit a game. After readjusting my time zone in Preferences a week back, I haven't had to change that again. My time preference reads correctly. But everytime I edit my game, the time changes, so I have to consciously reset the time. The way this happens is that when I enter "edit" mode on the scheduled game it changes the time in the game time fields. Then if I forget to readjust these, the time in these fields is recorded as the new game time.
