Hi, everyone!  The problem is following - the absence of buttons "Check IN" and "Check OUT" in context menus and grayed out versions of them in main menu. That means,  I'm not able to edit any content of the game - only view "Read Only Copies" and "Local Copies".  To be exact - I can check out only once - but then RED DOT appears.

I've tried messing with SQL Server configuration including, manual database installation, permissions, changing connection string to use another provider. Also tried both 2005 and 2008 versions of SQL. Nothing helps! Everything is perfectly viewable, but not editable!

Working on 64-bit machine with Vista Ultimate.

If anyone encountered this problem, please share your solution, if any.

Have you tried the 'Manage Module' option?

Thanks for replying - but modules are switching without any problem. Unavailability of these buttons prevents me from getting a 'Writable copy', which I save my edits in.

Assuming you're looking at a core resource in read-only mode, have you tried File > Save As?

That lets me save the resource with a new name in the list of resources for my module, checked out for editing.

Yes, of course! Another copy appears with the red dot. Even when I'm creating my own module this thing happens with all resources in the palette.

A red dot indicates that a resource has been checked out to someone else, which shouldn't be happening on a single-user setup. I've never seen it happen spontaneously like you're describing in testing before. Do you have multiple accounts on that computer?

Thank you very much for explaining, what the red dot is....I have found the solution! Finally!

The problem existed because of the NAME of my computer. It contained russian symbols. Each time I checked out some resource - the properties window showed me question marks in check out status instead of my real computer name.

Computer name was 'SF-ПК'. User account name is 'Sergeyko'
But the properties string was as follows - 'Checked out by SF-??\\\\Sergeyko'
So it was really checked out to someone else, as you say.

I've changed the computer name to 'SF-PC', and now everything works perfectly!

I think that's beacuse of the language of the main database -
so that WINDOWS USER NAME and COMPUTER NAME must be in ENGLISH only.

Again thanks a LOT! Many thanks!

Interesting! Not something that we'd tested internally, all our computers are named by IS. I'll submit a bug about this, not sure whether it'll be something we can easily fix though. The fact that there's a workaround is good, I'll add it to the "known issues" wiki page.

Russian symbols in pathways to .xls files, for example, prevent ExcelProcessor from generating .gda files. So, russian users of the toolset should do all processing in specially created folders without russian symbols in the pathway.

Hug you, Sergeyko, for the solution of the checking in-out issue.

When you change Username to English alternative, the name of your account on the comp isn't changed accordigly. Looks nearly impossible to rename any account on system lvl - system config and registration, software registration, lotsa configurations are tied to russian original account name and folder.

The easiest walkaround i see is to create another originally english named account on the comp and make it administrator. Then just copy Everything from Bioware folder of your previous comp account to the new one - this will restore all your characters, saves and addins installed.

May be I'm wrong about account renaming - pls correct my proposal then.

So its a Unicode issue, really. Well, if you (Bioware) had sticked to .NET for developing the tools(et) those would never have happened. But than you would have to deal with all the marshalling problems, I know...
But then again, those issues aren't something that's hard to anticipate, either.

Possible workaround: If your using NTFS you can allways "spoof" an path using a reparse point. Basiclly creating a symbolic link, that should work just fine because 99% of all applications aren't aware of them.

You would have 2 paths pointing to the exact same data on your harddrive.
You can use NTFS Link to accomplish that comfortable.

I stumbled upon this thread because I had the same problem, although I had Croatian characters in my Windows username instead of Russian ones.
But thankfully there's another workaround for those who don't want to create another Windows user account just because of Dragon Age.
You can change your username (I'm not talking about Display name in Control Panel, changing that won't be enough) in Administrative Tools, that fixed the problem for me. Here are the instructions to do that in Windows XP:
