I got it on one of my Rogues , City elf male after doing every (or almost every) sidequest in the entire game when traveling on my way to finish the game

Edit : Theres a rare encounter for a ring too? What stats does the ring have?

i have got it almost every playthrough, but i usually do all the sidequests, and i usually get it by travelling back and forth between the elven ruins and the elven camp. i find that if u have done enough side quests, the random encounter will happen and yay, u get to pull a decent axe from a tree stump.

its also kind of cool that the chicks dig it lol.

i guess, the reason it is usually when u have done enough sidequests, u get her, is becuase theres no more random encounters left to spawn when u go from a to b. unlike the starmetal/superman cookie, ive had that at level 7, then never got it till lvl 24, it seems axameter likes to hide till the end, atleast for me anyweay.

however i find, as long as u travel a little b4 u go to redcliffe after the lands meet, esp, in the brecillion area, it usually spawns.

I don't think where you're walking matters, I had the assassins from Leliana's personal quest attack me (in a forest) on the boat ride from the Circle Tower to Lake Calenhad.

How the forest got in the middle of the lake, I will never know.

I got supremely lucky in my last playthrough and Axameter was actually the VERY FIRST random encounter I had. Since I don't have the Starfang DLC Axameter lasted for me for quite some time, all the way up until I got Top Sider's Honor about half way through the game. I think out of all the times I've played through the game I've gotten teh Axameter encounter three times.

I've done four playthroughs and never had a sword in the stone or one ring type encounter.

Do these random encounters count towards the percentage of the map explored statistic? If so, doesn't that make it close to impossible to explore everything in one playthrough when it only has a 3% chance.

Random encounter indeed. Never actually found it, but there's this video from utube:

Yeah, I had the Leliana encounter between Redcliff Castle and the Village of Redcliff. Some of the encounters you can get are pretty comical if you consider the geography.

From the Prima Guide:

"Trigger: Insanely low chance of triggering.

Map: A Strange Wood

Description: An old axe is lodged in a stump. Peasants are convinced that whoever pulls it out will be in line to be the next king of Ferelden.

Action: There is no combat in this encounter. Simply pull the axe from the stump. It may not make you the next ruler of Ferelden, but at least you'll get a nice axe from the deal."

I got the encounter early in my second play through. But random means random.....Your mileage may vary...

Got it on my third play through as a level 20 human warrior. Really, the simplest way to do it seems to be to map travel between the brecilian outskirts and the ruins, a few times and it will probably come up. Tried between the forest and the outskirts to be quicker, but kept running into Tegrin instead, figured it was the terrain between locations.

Neither have I. Never triggered Jowan's Intentions either. I'm on my 5th playthrough now. And I always do everything there is to do in the game including all the side quests and I'm always dropping stuff off at Warden's Peak, so I'm constantly traveling all over the map. Still, nothing. Why put in encounters that are nearly impossible to trigger? Especially if the axe or the one ring isnt any better than the equipment you can find/buy in the rest of the game.

Check the wiki, do a search for Strange Wood. Or follow the link, I completed the article for this weapon, Nugbane, Dwarven Defender, and Dead Metal Bucket within the last month or so.
It can appear travelling the world map to Brecilian Forest locations, but will never appear travelling from them. So start at Denerim, and travel to the outskirts and reload if it doesn't appear(you just waste time travelling to and from the destination back to denerim).

Jowan's Intentions has another thread here you can discuss it in, along with all the rumors, and current information for the Deep Woods(the name of the encounter for Jowan's Intentions).

There is no random encounter with a ring, unless you mean Out of the Way which is part of a Chanter's Board quest and gives the Feldspar Ring or Seal of Rat Red which is part of a  Mage's Collective quest and very common.

Treacherous Path is the other rare encounter featuring LoTR references but there is no ring in it.

I just got the Axameter at Level 8 traveling to Brecilian Forest from Denerim. I cleared the other random encounters, saved in Denerim, cursed at Old Tegrin a few times, and got the event to spawn. Standard trash gear, no DLC. Level/Gear/Party have zero bearing on getting the event to trigger imho. It's random.

Save Game in Denerim, then travel from Denerim to Brecilian Forest and if you don't get it, reload and try again. Boring, but hey, it worked for me. lol
