I don't think where you're walking matters, I had the assassins from Leliana's personal quest attack me (in a forest) on the boat ride from the Circle Tower to Lake Calenhad.

Yeah, I had the Leliana encounter between Redcliff Castle and the Village of Redcliff. Some of the encounters you can get are pretty comical if you consider the geography.

"Trigger: Insanely low chance of triggering.
Map: A Strange Wood
Description: An old axe is lodged in a stump. Peasants are convinced that whoever pulls it out will be in line to be the next king of Ferelden.
Action: There is no combat in this encounter. Simply pull the axe from the stump. It may not make you the next ruler of Ferelden, but at least you'll get a nice axe from the deal."
I got the encounter early in my second play through. But random means random.....Your mileage may vary...

I've done four playthroughs and never had a sword in the stone or one ring type encounter.
Neither have I. Never triggered Jowan's Intentions either. I'm on my 5th playthrough now. And I always do everything there is to do in the game including all the side quests and I'm always dropping stuff off at Warden's Peak, so I'm constantly traveling all over the map. Still, nothing. Why put in encounters that are nearly impossible to trigger? Especially if the axe or the one ring isnt any better than the equipment you can find/buy in the rest of the game.

It can appear travelling the world map to Brecilian Forest locations, but will never appear travelling from them. So start at Denerim, and travel to the outskirts and reload if it doesn't appear(you just waste time travelling to and from the destination back to denerim).

Jowan's Intentions has another thread here you can discuss it in, along with all the rumors, and current information for the Deep Woods(the name of the encounter for Jowan's Intentions).

There is no random encounter with a ring, unless you mean Out of the Way which is part of a Chanter's Board quest and gives the Feldspar Ring or Seal of Rat Red which is part of a Mage's Collective quest and very common.
Treacherous Path is the other rare encounter featuring LoTR references but there is no ring in it.

Save Game in Denerim, then travel from Denerim to Brecilian Forest and if you don't get it, reload and try again. Boring, but hey, it worked for me. lol
