Just finished the game and thought I'd try the toolset out. Can it still damage saved games and if it can is the damage reversible?
Is it safe to start?

For security copy your Characters Folder (saves are there) in documents to a save place. If anything is wrong, you can deinstall and install the game new.

not yet. I would advise to wait for the latest patch. its in final testing phase. should be out by this weekend, i hope. I too am waiting for it to drop so I can try out the toolset.

Yes, toolset 1.01 is working fine.
To be ultra-safe, copy your Characters folder as ModWriter suggested.
Also, when you've finished playing with the toolset, disable any modules you've created before resuming the OC (this can be done on the in-game DLC screen).
As far as I can tell, neither of these steps is necessary, but it makes me feel a whole lot better.
