I honestly have to admit I just assumed it was a natural, but very very rare, hair colour in the DA universe. Like someone else said, Hawke could also have white hair. I do think Wulfram's lyriam explanation could make sense too...

Stress/shock of having lyrium branded into his skin maybe? I dunno.

Nobody within the DA universe seems to think it's strange enough to comment on - and it's not like they're shy about asking about his glowy tattoos or spiky armor. Maybe it's really just something that's not fantastic enough to remark on in Thedas. Kind of like being bisexual isn't either.

If Fenris is supposed to be inspired by jrpgs, I'm surprised that his hair isn't green or blue.

Devil May Cry is not a JRPG.

I was thinking of all the "FF-Fenris" comparisons.  Fenris would have fit quite easily into any Final Fantasy game.

He's not actually a dogboy. People just seem to like the idea of Lightning as a shota.

I thought the white hair was due to the lyrium infusion.

Out of place?  Perhaps.
Incredibly funny?  Definitely.

Seriously though- enven IRL, people's hair can go completely white after terrible trauma.  Spend a summer w/ refugees and torture victims and you'll see what I mean.  I met a 27 year old woman from Sudan with these dark, reddish eyebrows and completely white, whispy hair.  Her story was... well, it was bad.  I have always assumed that after extreme physical, mental and (?) sexual durress at the hand of his master, Fenris' hair paid the price.  Lucky for him it ended up looking smexy instead of thinning or just completely gone.

If you'll look back on his Act 3 personal quest, when he meets Varania for the first time in over a decade, she doesn't give the least bit of surprise when she sees his hair colour.

Considering Fenris fought for his family's freedom by entering a tournament where the ritual was the prize, I'm going to assume they saw him being branded with lyrium and saw what it did to him.

Also, it'd be really out of place for her to just go "I knew it would be.... WTF happened to your hair?!"

I thought about that, but I doubt they would have actually gone to watch. Logically, Danarius would have a special place (like a room or something) to imprint the lyrium. Also, Fenris and Varania probably hadn't seen each other after the imprinting, since Fenris took a while to remember her, when they met - with Hawke and Danarius - inside the Hanged Man. Danarius is not a nice person, so it's unlikely he let his "little wolf" see her, or their mother.

Fenris is Danarius' bodyguard and I assume Danarius goes outside to hunt for kittens, virgins and brownies. Also  Danarius loved to parade Fenris around, so perhaps Varania saw her Fenris on the street.

Yeah, this is about as responsive as I get to that statement.

I think a better question regarding hair colour, is:
Why does Fenris have black eyebrows, but white hair?

I'm pointing the finger at Meredith here. Her hair is blond, but her eyebrows are black too. In real life, someone with blond hair and eyebrows of a different colour, has obviously fallen into the stupid notion that you must have blond hair to be attractive. Ever since EA got their grubby little hands on BioWare, the visual quality of their games have become Hollywood-ised, most notably in DA2.

Fenris and Meredith both have this differing hair and eyebrow colour, as PinkShoes has made me realise (though I've always known about them, I just completely forgot). So to me, it's clear that Fenris' hair has always been white.

1. You can have natural blond hair and dark eyebrows. Half my family does (not me though).
2. Plenty of people dye their hair blonde just because they think it suits them, not because they think its the only way to be attractive.
3. I didn't realize contrasting hair and eyebrows was an archtypical "Hollywood" feature. Even if it was, it still wouldn't be an issue. Fenris wasn't Hollywood-ised, he was anime-ised, which is so much worse.

1. I, myself, did have blond hair and dark brown eyebrows, but my hair was still changing colour then. This was when I was of the ages of 1 to 16/17. Right now, my hair is of a light brown colour, and it probably won't be changing anymore. Are any of your blond-haired, dark eyebrowed family members full adults age-wise?
2. That may be true, but how can so many people think their hair actually suits, being blond? That's like saying plenty of people believe they need coffee, to concentrate and to stay awake. I've never drank coffee, yet  I can do without it.
3. It's not, really, but if you're on TV (especialy if you're female) then there is a very good chance that you've dyed your hair blond. TBH, I'd prefer DA characters to be somewhat anime-ised, well over being Hollywood-ised. It's less like they're appealing, for the sake of being appealing. Anime doesn't get clouded by progress, affecting the real world (such as iPods and phones), unless it's supposed to be set in that sort of world - if you know what I mean.

1. My mother is 46, and has dark eyebrows and blond hair. People assuming it's dyed is something of a pet peeve of hers. Its perfectly common. Fenris is an exaggerated example, but Meredith is perfectly believable.
2. Do you live on a planet populated entirely by bottle blondes or something? Anyway, even if lots of people do dye their hair blond, it doesn't mean they think anyone without blond hair is ugly. I'm not objecting to the idea that blond hair is popular, I'm objecting to the idea that anyone who's dyed their hair blond has "fallen into the stupid notion that you must have blond hair to be attractive".
3. No, I don't really know what you mean. Nobody in Dragon Age, or Hollywood fantasy movies, has an iPod. I do agree that anachronisms cannot be justified in the name of making the characters prettier, and that characters shouldn't be pretty for pretty's sake. Fenris' hair is obviously white because the developers thought it would look cool, even though its not believable. This kind of wackiness is far more characteristic of anime than hollywood.

Why would see have seen Fenris? She served magister Ahriman, and he lived in Qarinus. Danarius lived in Minrathous. Besides, she is a servant, a tailor. She probably doesn't have that much time to wander the streets. And then she will not visit the same places as Danarius would. I doubt Danarius went shopping for groceries at the local market.

More ontopic: as others have said as well, I always assumed the extreme pain of the ritual turned his hair white. It's really not such an uncommon concept. I don't see why this would be something cheap of Bioware to make him look anime or whatever. It simply fits within his story.

Lyrium had a side-effect on him.

Not quite. They were originally slaves to Danarius during their childhood, but after Fenris won his family their freedom Varania went on to serve Magister Ahriman.

At least, that's how I took it.

Anyway, we don't know the exact circumstances of the lyrium-branding ritual other then that it was a ritual in which lyrium was branded into Fenris' skin.

I'm sticking to my theory that the trauma of such an experience -- coupled with the lyrium itself -- changed his black hair to white hair.

^I assume that as well, but it seems likely that Varania and her mother were immediately kicked out when Leto had won their freedom and were on their own since then. Somehow I doubt Varania has seen her brother after the ritual before the events in the Hanged Man. But yes, that is my interpretation. There is no hard proof offered in the game.

I've always thought it was a natural hair color found in elves. In Denerim, there is an elf girl with white hair talking to another kid with orange hair. Then there is also Elora, that elf in the Dalish camps who watches the halla. Although in her case, it could have been from old age.
