I think a better question regarding hair colour, is:
Why does Fenris have black eyebrows, but white hair?

I'm pointing the finger at Meredith here. Her hair is blond, but her eyebrows are black too. In real life, someone with blond hair and eyebrows of a different colour, has obviously fallen into the stupid notion that you must have blond hair to be attractive. Ever since EA got their grubby little hands on BioWare, the visual quality of their games have become Hollywood-ised, most notably in DA2.

Fenris and Meredith both have this differing hair and eyebrow colour, as PinkShoes has made me realise (though I've always known about them, I just completely forgot). So to me, it's clear that Fenris' hair has always been white.

Yeah, I am going to be offened by that considering that I am dirty blond, but real black eye brows and I am not growing anymore. My friend is true blond, but has black eyebrows too... in fact living in scandinavia, i can name two handfull of people who has blondish hair, but completely black eyebrows. Even more if we are going into brownish hair and eyebrows. In fact I will say that it is hollywood to assume that peoples have the same hair colour on top of their head a facial hair, because most people have at the very least slightly darker (If not black) facial hair.

As for Fenris white hair, that seems to be a natural color in Thedas after all there are npc's with it as well as our pc's can possible have it.

My hair can sometimes look "dirty blond" as you say, depending on the light. I don't know about yours, but in my country, there's an overgrown infestation of people who dye their hair blond, perhaps to try and pass themselves off as such, I don't know.

At least we can agree on something. Fenris just so happens to have white hair, it's uncommon, but it is his natural hair colour. It has nothing to do with the lyrium imprint. If it did, he would have mentioned that, in addition to the scars and that claw thing he does, a result of the imprinting... now wouldn't he?
If a developer can shed some light on this, we can get on with our lives (so to speak).

^^ Indeed. I don't even know how many people I know with blond hair and darker eyebrows, including me. It's very common here in Sweden.

As for Fenris. A friend of my parents had his hair turned gray before he turned 20 and completely white before he turned 30 (and he still has dark eyebrows). So it can happen and considering what Fenris went through I never thought that it was out of place.

Why would Fenris mention it was the ritual that turned his hair white? "Oh, in case you were wondering about my hair, the ritual did that too"? How would he even know it was because of the ritual? He has no memory from his life before, so I think he forgot his old hair color as well.

It's possible it was the ritual, or that it is his natural hair color. In the light of his story, I assume the former, but again, everyone can choose his/her interpretation.

It's also possible that they gave Fenris black eyebrows so they would be more visible, and not make him look old with white eyebrows.

With many of the blonde-haired characters that I create in rpgs, I'll give them darker eyebrows because blonde eyebrows blend in too much with their face, and are harder to notice. In general, I like darker haired characters, so their hair contrasts with their light colored skin.

Ugh, for someone complaining about logic you aren't exercising much of it, as I said earlier in this thread significant trauma CAN turn hair white. There have been numerous occassions of people's hair turning white due to it just google it. Fenris went through significant trauma with the Lyrium branding. It was enough to turn his hair white, it wasn't just a 'stupid art direction'. If it was there would be other characters with white, purple, pink hair.

He isn't a JRPG esque character because he has white hair.

He also isn't just a JRPG character.

He's a walking love letter to a specific JRPG character from a certain final fantasy game who also favoured figure hugging dark outfits, big hair, big swords, was experimented on against his will and infused with a magical substance that gave him special powers and had a shadowy past but then escaped to torment the people that made him the way he is.

When I first saw him I thought "har har they've put that NPC in as a nod to cloud, thats pretty cool...... oh wait he's a squad mate. Ok......"

But yeh, to answer the OP's question, he has white hair because blonde would have been too obvious.

Fenris is an elf, maybe white is a possible natural collor for elves.

The white hair option was available for PC's in all the Dragon Age games (heck a couple of my experiments with characters have had white hair), so no it is not just some JRPG styling.

As to why Fenris has it? Trauma due to the imprinting of lyrium was always my belief.

Originally, I thought the reason behind why he's hair is white would have been an effect to when he got his lyrium markings at the start. If the ritual he went through had caused some severe trauma to him, it MIGHT be a plausable explanation, but that can't necessarily be the case for certain.

I was led to believe that lyrium has some magical substance that would be difficult to identify (because we now have science), and maybe that was what "caused" his hair to turn white.

Judging by many previous comments here, he could have been born with white hair from the start--even after the lyrium branding done on him--but also had black eyebrows. I have a brother who had brown eyebrows and had blond hair before turning 13, so this theory about having a lighter colour of hair compared to their eyebrows is somewhat understandable.

If you want some definite answers, try asking the character designer at BioWare through e-mail, a social networking website or, if you're lucky, face-to-face. They're the ones behind the creations of so many characters, not us.

Because it looks cool, I assume. Or maybe the artist wanted to add a more "wolfish" look to him, considering his name and nickname, and thought white hair would help in that regard.

It's probably genetic.  Though if he did bleach it, he probably used some hair toner, as he doesn't have any of that  unflattering yellow tint.

I always assumed it had something to do with Lyrium being etched into his skin. I mean, how else? I really don't believe his hair magically turned snow white because of stress. And I don't believe he was born this way, because his eyebrows are black. He definitely didn't bleach it. His hair is most likely the result of his torture, a sort of mutation, or how should I call it...

You guys do realize that elves can have white hair without being old, right? So why the argument about it being a sign of Bioware somehow attempting to make things edgy and stuff when DAO had an elven child with ghost white hair?

Hell, she even has Fenris' skin tone. Another lost sibling of his perhaps?

Blame the person who's first post was necro'ing it, right before mine. But since I only just saw this thread thanks to said necro, I decided to chime in with that elf girl who I pass by every time I go to Denerim in DAO. It's like everyone somehow misses her.

I assumed it had something to do with the lyrium in his system. Clearly, Fenris's design and personality were inspired by anime, but I don't mind.

On the first part, I actually hated how all of your party members in DA:O except for Morrigan were so undistinctive looking. I loved the more stylized appearances of companions in DA2.

On the second part, playing a female mage Hawke (who supports rights for mages) romancing Fenris, I thought it was /really/ interesting trying to keep him in line. He's a difficult personality. He and Carver are constantly testing you in different ways. I thought it was a nice change of pace from companions who usually can be talked into just about anything if you're persuasive enough.

As a majority of people posting here have already mention, his appearance which is very anime-like (Final Fantasy-relativity) which could just be it. It is a game after all

It could be completely natural. If you pay close attention to Origins and Inquisition you will notice many other elves with white/silver toned hair, and they look fairly young. Fenris could also be an.. er.. older elf.

Or the lyrium changed the colour of his hair, but I'd expect his eyebrows to be fairly similar in tone, or the creators did it purposely for the sake of not making him look too aged(?)/unappealing since he's a romance option. Who cares, look at that face!

Personal headcanon is that it's the lyrium, and that either he dyes his eyebrows (he does have a certain amount of pride, after all) or that Danarius found a way to stop the lyrium from turning them white in the first place.

I suspect the real reason the creators left his eyebrows black is for aesthetic reasons, however.  DA2's graphics make white eyebrows look, at best, painted on.  At worst, they end up being nearly nonexistent.

And fangirling is entirely appropriate, Toxicity.  This is Fenris we're talking about. <3
