That may be true (I still haven't read the books, so I don't know for certain) but it doesn't explain why only the hair on top of his head is white while his eyebrows are black.

This is actually pretty possible. I have a friend who's a natural redhead (like carrot red red) and her eyebrows are dark brown, almost black. Same with some guys and beards, my super-blonde uncle has a brown bead if he lets it grow out. And my own hair is light brown while my eyebrows are black. Eyebrow hair isn't quite the same makeup as top-of-your-head hair, and while it USUALLY matches, it doesn't always.

 

So I never saw Fenris's mismatched hair/eyebrows to be indicative of unnatural hair. BUT I do personally think lyrium poisoning is to blame.

I've always assumed it was the lyrium, or the trauma from the ritual with the lyrium. >____>

If I remember correctly, you can ask him about that (or it was a random party banter and someone else asked him) and he answers, that it was due to the Lyrium, so basically, a reaction of that magical experiment where he also got the tattoos

It always seemed clear to me that it's the lyrium. His hair is the same colour as his tattoos. He must have a big lyrium patch covering his scalp.

So, if we're already necroing...

 

In the Dragon Age world, some people are born with white hair (as in real life - though only for a year or two - a la me), and that hair colour stays with them, either for the rest of their life, or until their hair turns grey. If it were real life we wouldn't be given an option of making our characters' hair white (or even be given an option). If it were a Japanese RPG, we'd be able to have pink, blue, green and purple as well. Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas let you choose absolutely any colour for your character's hair, as natural colours, doesn't make them Japanese games.

 

I'd like to support this with the fact that Genevieve and Bregan (who are siblings) from 'The Calling' both have white hair. Although they are both wardens, it seems unlikely that the color is the result of some stressful event (such as The Joining), considering that none of the other wardens have it, and Bregan and Genevieve have very different personalities and motivations for joining Grey Wardens.

 

Also, mage for DA:O promo art and several other franchise illustrations also feature white hair, which obviously isn't the result of old age.

Well, it's safe to say they definitely weren't young, but I never got the impression they are that old.

 

For one, the amount of heavy tanking and physical exertion that Genevieve exhibits throughout the book always made me thought of her as 'mature' over 'old'. You'd also think that anyone in the novel would mention her age if that was the case.

 

Also, her fiance Guy is described as with 'grey hair at the temples' at the same time her hair is white and 'cascading', so probably not receding... maybe??

 

While writing this I realize how circumstantial this implications are... I think the biggest impression made on me regarding to characters' age is actually the narration by Stephen Hoye, who acts out each voice

I always assumed that the lyrium procedure took the pigment out of it. All things considered, it could've done so much worse to him.
