If you're playing without mages then poisons are a godsend.

All I know is when my FHN rogue stabbed Arl Howe with vengeance in her heart, and poisoned him with Quiet Death, he suddenly ran off from the battle toward the end, and as the poison ate away at his remaining HP, died an agonizing slow death in the hallway. (He didn't do that in my previous encounter with him.)

It was rather enjoyable to watch.

I like deathroot to be honest, you can stun most enemies while backstabbing including elite ogres which i found hilarious...I assumed bosses were immune lol...i was wrong.

Another vote for the poisons with good stun options: Concentrated Crow Poison, Quiet Death, Concentrated Deathroot Extract. Really, those are the only 3 I need--stack them and enemies stay stunned, if they're not dead already.

The key to poisons is learning to stack the right poisons at the right level. Regular venom and deathroot for Lothering, Circle and Redcliffe, concentrated Crow, Venom, Deathroot, for Haven, Urn, Dalish, and Quiet Death, Concentrated Demon, Concentrated Soldier for Deep Roads and Denerim. With Coupe de Grace and top paralyze runes you can have a paralyze run through, without the need to position yourself to backstab, make sure you get Leliana to dirty fight, and your support mages to throw paralyze glyphs, or a paralyze spell.

+1 of the tequila

on the serious side I would say Crow's Poison is the best choice, though with boss' I generally use Soldier's Bane I believe the name is, make the battle's quick and easy.

But what I usually do is flask bomb everyone

I started my second game, featuring a Dalish melee rogue. Since I never used weapon poisons at all in my first playthrough (human noble warrior, with Leliana who only tossed some bombs around in big fights) I'm curious which poisons people favor. I guess once I get Coup de Grace, the ones that have a chance to stun are no-brainers. Or do they not proc often? And which other poisons does everyone favor?

According to GameBanshee most only add 1-3 extra damage so I guess I'll stick with the deathroot recipes for the stun.

Does anyone have positive experience with magebane and soldier's bane? Since mages are always the first target my guess is that magebane isn't worth it, but what about soldier's bane? Does it work on bosses like the dragonkin or the broodmother?

Thanks for any replies, they'll save me a good deal of gold experimenting, and gold is hard to come by in a new game. ;)

I am on my tenth play and when I get into a fix with a particularly powerful mage or warrior those are the first 2 poisons that come out (especially the concentrated versions.)  I find them highly effective and once you start using them you pick up poisons galore from enemies especially darkspawn.  The bombs are pretty cool to use to especially if your group in getting meleed by powerful creatures. Freeze and the Acid bomb rock!  On the broodmother or high dragons or archdemon per say, I use any and all of the highest concentrated poisons. Multiple poison use at once can really give you an edge on enemies.
