In past games, romances were hard-earned goodies, but not part of the story. They were hidden side-quests. You really had to go out of your way to romance a character throughout the game, building up the suspense. When you cap the relationship with sex, no matter how it was depicted, it felt like an accomplishment. For example, both Jade Empire and Mass Effect for example had it before the final battle after spending hours on fighting alongside and getting to know your LI. Personally I think ME's was the most intimate and emotional of the two, including it's sex scence.
In comparison, the romances in DAO and DA2 were just too simple and easy; a few strands of skillful dialogue that led to a cliche explosion of corny dialogue and bumping unglies through underwear that could happen at almost any time. DA2's relationships were the worst of all being almost exactly the same. Having the LI be a quality character is important and plays a major role, but if the relationship isn't just as well-tailored, it's not something worth pursuing.
I hope that for DA3, it'll be quality over quantity. DA2 had too many choices that were too similar to be good, though the ability to have a relationship between the rivalry and friendship spectrum was a touch I would like to see in the next installment. Also, Bioware has to get over Carth Syndrom and all its related illnesses. Having someone love you because you remind them of a dead person is not romantic.
So bioware, please have actual sex scenes with acual relationships.
