Oh, so you don't have a krogan, batarian or vorcha?

I tested my krogan last night and played with some guys that just started playing this week - they all had krogans - got them from PSP.

It's not unfair to make the commendation pack something that only some can get. I cannot imagine how someone playing since release with any bit of dedication could not have at least one of these characters. Of course it is RNG so it is possible that someone playing everyday since release doesn't yet have one ... but I highly doubt its any significant % of players.

If you have been dedicated and the RNG gods really hate you that much ... I'm sorry ... maybe next time buddy.

Victory pack is received whether you participate in effort or not.  Based on Chris' twitter feed, though, an all savage team is also required for participation in effort toward community goal.  So, if I play as an AJ all weekend and kill 1'000 troopers, it will not count toward the 7 mill. Goal.

There are 7 distinct Krogan, Vorcha, and Batarian.

If you haven't unlocked ONE specific character, it's an RNG troll.

If you haven't unlocked one of these SEVEN, you haven't played enough.

I agree with OP on this one.

Quit spewing this nonsense. I played MP consistently since release day, an average of an hour or two every night, and only unlocked my first "savage" character about a week before rebellion came out. That was before the gold character pool was diluted further by rebellion (5/12 compared to 7/18). At that point, I had a spate of luck with those particular characters and now sit at 4/7. I consider myself to have average luck with the RNG. Just for a basis for comparison, I only received carnifex I two weeks ago after three months' of playing.

What does that say about new players, or people who have bad luck with the RNG? The RNG is random, and excluding players from participating in a weekend event -- or worse yet, keeping players from satisfying their squad goal in public games -- based upon the whimsy of a random number generator is pretty crappy, no matter how you attempt to justify it.

Yup ... victory packs are even better than participation medals since you don't even need to participate!
Dumb that savage squad is needed for the community goal ... I'm gonna guess we aren't going to make it then.
I like my krogans and batarians but I won't be playing as them all weekend.
Once I finish my squad goal ... I'll probably only be using the savage guys if the lobby requests.

Okay, so I was looking into it more and here are some solid numbers for the argument.
This is done from the point of view of a player totall new to ME3 MP. Start by taking; p(Kro,Bat,Vor) = 7/41 (7 characters from 41 rare weapons/characters/gear). The probability that you have not unlocked one of these characters upon purchase of a PSP is then (1-p(Kro,Bat,Vor))^2  since you have 2 independent rare-unlocks per PSP. Then raise this to the power of PSP's you buy, consequently;
# PSP's bought          probability of NOT unlocking Krogan, Batarian, or Vorcha
1        0.687686
2        0.472912
3        0.325215
4        0.223646
5        0.153798
6        0.105765
7        0.0727329
8        0.0500174
9        0.0343962
10      0.0236538
Okay, so after 2 PSP purchases, you essentially have a 50% chance of unlocking one of the characters. Although you don't have < 10% of not having unlocked a required character until after >6 purchases, which is perhaps the limit of what a new player would be willing to do in the weekend.
Again this is starting from a fresh manifest.

Friend of mine joined the ME3 multiplayer about 3 weeks ago. Plays several games a night (Silver or Bronze, he knows he wont be good enough for Gold yet).
He took part in the last challenge and did his part, dozens of pizza box missions.
And rightly so, he's maxing out the recruit and veteran packs first to rank up weapons.

You can't get the rare characters with recruit packs and there is VERY little chance of getting them with veteran packs.

Why should new players be penalized for having bad luck with the store?
He's now going to be kicked out of every game he plays this weekend due to not having one of the characters, and misses out on getting a commendation pack. That's very fair.

Mission should have been all human males or females to mix things up a bit (how many all human teams do you see in Gold? How many all geth teams do you see?) And as all players have the human characters, everyone would be able to do it.

Alternatively, Bioware should have given all players who haven't unlocked any, a free character unlock.

Very poor weekend challenge IMO.

/end rant

Who cares about new players? They don't need N7 weapons yet anyway.

Seriously.  I didn't attempt squad goals when I was a new player, because I knew I wasn't good enough for Gold extraction.  It gave me incentive to play and practice, so that maybe I would eventually be good enough to extract on Gold and get an N7 weapon.  I didn't complain about not getting the same weapons that the Gold players did, because I knew they were meant as special weapons to be rewarded for meeting special challenges.

Now it seems people think that anyone should get an N7 weapon just for playing a small amount and completing some easy goal.  That kind of defeats the purpose of having this special class of weapons.

It's kind of like saying Premium Spectre Packs should cost 20,000 credits, because everyone should get the Rare and UItra-Rare weapons.

That's not how statistics work, he has the same odds each time he opens a pack until he maxes out a weapon. If you flip a coin 4 times and you get 4 tails, what are your odds the next flip will be tails? (The answer is 50/50)

The question you are asking is not the question you want to ask. Each time he opens a PSP, he has a fixed chance of drawing a Kro/Bat/Vor = 7/41 per gold slot.
What I'm calculating above is different. I'm calculating the odds of NOT having a Kro, Bat, or Vor after N PSP's have been purchased. That's why the number decreases with N. Each chance of drawing a Kro,Bat, or Vorcha is fixed, independent, and denoted p(Kro,Bat,Vor).

Coin example; You have a 50% chance of tails (K/B/V). Each flip you have a 50/50 chance of getting tails (K/B/V). The question is, after 4 flips what are the odds that none of them will have been tails (K/B/V)? The converse question is ; after 4 flips, what is the probabilty you have flipped only heads?
The answer is; p(Heads)^4 = (1-p(tails))^4 = .5^4 = 6%.

Pretty sure you only have to do the squad goal once. I'll do it once on bronze. Then it's back to the grind.

So all you people w/out krogan/batarians/vorcha, hit me up. I'll play with you.

Less than a week on the pc version so far, I now have two characters that qualify for the weekend event.

For anyone that does not have any, how long have you been playing?

3 of my friends have had this game since launch, and did not have a Krogan/Vorcha/Batarian until about a week before this challenge. I've had a KroSent since day one, but I know a number of people have just not had luck with the class drops in the store. So whilst I myself am in no danger of not being able to partake, several friends of mine very nearly were.

I really don't think that's fair, so at the risk of being labelled insufficiently calllous towards the community, I'll play Devil's Advocate and state that I don't think this challenge's setup is a very good one, even though the KRO TEAM will finish it the second it launches.

Sure the RNG system sucks, but if you play enough, you should have pretty much everything by now. I mean I play maybe a couple times a week since release and I've maxed my rares. It's really not that difficult. Only when it comes to ultra rares.

It's called RANDOM for a reason. I buy a PSP every single night and don't have a lot of stuff.

You obviously know more about this than other folk on here ( certainly me ).

So you still stand by these numbers?  Can I suggest that if 100 people bought five(5)  PSP each then I would expect that
85 of them would have one of the characters unlocked, assuming that the store is really random?

Just luck of the draw.  I've been playing MP around two weeks and have two.  Others have been Playing much longer and have none.

If he got it 3 weeks ago ... he probably got it on sale ... tell him to stop being a cheapo and spend the $20 he saved on PSPs.

LOL, that's how I justified spending $ on packs to myself.  I got both ME2 and ME3 at a discount when I got them, so I spent the difference between full retail and what I paid on packs. :P

It's not impossible, though it is unlikely.  A Rare does drop from time to time in the 5th slot of a Veteran Pack.

What really bothers me about this is that it's the first challenge offered on all difficulty levels - as if it's meant for newer/not-as-awesome players to have a shot at getting a nice reward at the end.

But then to go and exclude players who haven't had luck with a fricking RNG.... that just doesn't seem right.

And yes, I do speak as someone who doesn't have any of the characters for the event unlocked. My RNG seems to favor rare weapons and hates giving em character cards of any level.

I'll take your basic 7 in 41 (0.17073) chance is correct.

I used probability mass function of binomial distribution and got

Probability of getting 0 success in 1 trial: 0.829270
Probability of getting 0 success in 5 trials: 0.39217488
Probability of getting 0 success in 10 trials :0.15380114
Probability of getting 0 success in 20 trials :0.02365479

Edited: Yeah sorry I somehow confused PSPs for SPs, my bad.

It's plain as day. Some active members of our community are being flat out excluded from having a chance to complete all of the weekend event goals.

Leave out a chance for an N7? Whatever... if someone thinks that makes Bioware customers happier.

Divide the community? Create more ill will? What are they thinking in Edmonton?
