Honestly, I was fine with how she looked. I mean, the intent was for her to look human, and she pulled it off pretty well (pre-EDI). She fooled everyone at the Mars station, anyway. I thought she was pretty, and I was mesmerized by her eyes.

Her outfits, though? Yikes. Surely she could have worn something a little less form-fitting, yes?

To me, an android that is designed as an infiltration unit should be unobtrusive and nondescript. It should NOT look like a hot chick. It should look like an elderly person or a small child, most people ignore small children and the elderly, but everyone, male and female alike, stares at and scrutinizes attractive women and men. Making an infiltration unit an exaggerated version of an attractive woman makes it that much more likely to be detected.

If I was designing an android or a gynoid to infiltrate a base like the Mars ruins, I would make it look like a mid-level scientist on the staff, then kidnap that scientist and replace him/her. I would make certain that the scientist in question was not particularly well-liked, to minimize the likelihood that people would notice a change in his/her behavior after the switch.

But a sex robot that looks like a stripper from Chora's Den? No.

I can't shake the feeling that in the minds of certain designers, "female infiltrator" translated to "lots and lots of sex".

I'm not so sure that's wrong either.  I mean if you want to "infiltrate" as in "go completely unnoticed" sure.  But if you just want to "infiltrate" as in "get access to things the other side doesn't want you to have"... well... I have two words for you: Anna Chapman.

I never implied sex isn't part of infiltration and subtefuge. But there's a difference between being able to use sex as part of your skillset and being entirely built for that specific purpose.

I think using sex to get information is clumsy and dangerous. Surveillance should be the goal, and hacking. Two things an AI ought to excel at. I think people overestimate the amount of sensitive intel that is shared in post-coital bliss. Nope, it's all about the snoopin'.

I'd say it depends on the situation.
In this particular one on the Mars base given she's already posing as a scientist with security clearance, yeah it's completel unecesarry.

EDI's either naked or in a skin tight catsuit. If you really want to reinforce the "she's part of the crew like everyone else" idea, then give her the same uniform as everyone else.

Christ, it's Star Trek Voyager all over again.

?  Did they have a hot babe who was absent on uniform issue day too?

Halfway through the series, Voyager introduced Seven, an ex-Borg drone who was trying to be human again and they wanted to make feel part of the crew.
Naturally they did this by putting her in a skin tight catsuit and high heels for the entire run. The early catsuits even had visible corsets.

They did that to distract you from the horrible writing in general and the flip-flopping characterization and episode plots in particular.

If they really must have EDI as a humanoid robot rather than as "the ship", they could have atleast dropped the built in high heels, trimmed down her boobs a bit and not made it look like she's wearing something that looks like a one-piece as standard clothes.

Post-coital is one thing.  PRE-coital is another.  Men get stupid around beautiful women if they think might get to sleep with them.  And when it comes to men who have information/access you want, stupider=better-er.   Then there's always post-coital blackmail.

Using a beautiful woman to gather intelligence is one of those "tried and true since the dawn of time" things.  And there's a reason for that: it works.

I wouldn't say that.  It's like you say: it depends on the situation.  It's just that, of course, the situation can change.  Why "take the weapon out of your arsenal", so to speak?

I liked Edi's body. I enjoyed the fan service, and didn't take it too seriously. Edi is a robot. She views her body as a platform. It really is just a piece of metal.

Thats pretty repulsive. I'd rather the much easier to look at current EDI. Still just metal, but the uncanny valley makes it look like a human with her guts all out.
