I'm not sure this whole thing isn't a waste of time frankly, one major saving grace is that it is free.
Sorry I think we'll have to wait a while longer, we who have a PC.
If he is right.

What you're talking about is enjoyment. What staindgrey is talking about is narrative structure, progression, and basic storytelling necessities. The former is subjective. The latter is not. You can enjoy an objectively bad narrative, but such things do exist.
Strange. How the narrative can be "objectively bad", as there is no objective criteria exists to it being bad (or good either). The only way to rate such things is quite subjective itself (either "I like it " or "I dont like it"). Storytelling, music and movies isnt science, you know <_<.
You, sir, have never worked in any field involving creative writing and editorship. There is a very, very old standard that has existed for narrative structure that has to be followed for any work of art to be taken seriously by critics and, usually, customers. Videogames, however, can get a pass at times because a lot of gamers play for the game part, not the story part.
Think of it like math. There is a specific way in which things must be done in order to assure you get the final answer. You can still do them in any order you wish, or write it in your own short hand, etc., but all the steps and processes need to be there, otherwise, your final answer will be wrong. The only difference between a story and math is that, obviously, one can still enjoy a story that ends with the wrong answer. That doesn't change the fact that it's still incorrect.

"those who looked into these issues yuo wrote and found a good answer to all of them". Do I need to write it in bold font to make you understand? There are no basic story telling necessities, or rules.
...you did not just say that. I mean, you didn't say that seriously, did you?

Your argument is illogical. Since only "meaningful answer" to story is in fact one's enjoyment, and "one can still enjoy a story that ends with the wrong answer" - there exists no "wrong answer". And about "taken seeriously by the critics" - who cares about that, the critics are not paying money for the thing, the customers are. There is a lot of examples where "critics" and "community" opinions differ drastically, be it video game, movie or book.

How stupid is it that Microsoft can get EA DLC up before EA can on their own service.

I would use a field like, well, Art. You can't get much more into the creative arts, then, well creative art. :-)staindgrey wrote...

And, even art follows rules of composition.

Do you really think that people that go to art school spend the whole 2-4 years learning to draw, or how to set aperture and shutterspeed on a camera?
There are definite rules that go into art that have been discovered over the past 7,000 years, and failure to follow these rules might work in some cases; but, in general, you're better off following the rules than you are at breaking them. And, if you break them, if a critic asks why you made that choice, they'll probably want an answer other than "I liked the way it looked."

Art is a very bad example based on how broad art is like novels, comics, video games, music, movies, television, and etc. Art can be criticized but its universal while it doesn't matter if you liked or hated it. Personally I hate most of the rap genre and everything that is Twilight related but I can't say its not art because art is objective.bobwill wrote...
