a lot of powers have a damage component as well as a "force" component.

What exactly does the force component do?  I mean, I understand it sends foes flying, but how does that translate to actual damage done? has anyone ran tests to see what various levels of force translate into damage?

As far as I can tell force seems to do some amount of damage when the enemy in question hits something, the ground, a wall, and then the damage is based on how much was imparted, but it seems extremely vague.

I'm also interested in this.

I notice sometimes if you angle throw or concussive shot in such a way that it comes down onto an enemy's head, thus creating a sandwich with the ground and the force from above, it deals a significantly greater damage than if the opponent was sent flying to a wall. I'm not 100% about this though.

They never really explained the force mechanic. I think it does damage to barriers the higher it is but more is completely ineffective to shields and armor and they will only get stagger from the smallest amount.

Force means the effectiveness (relatively speaking) of a power to move objects and characters, measured in newtons.

I don't know how much fidelity this system has though.

I don't know how it factors into damage to enemies but I love sending them half way across a map with throw!

Bioware never did give any kind of formula for force so no one but them can really give any kind of numbers. Some of the following are fairly obvious but some of the things I do know are:
  • targets with armor & shields can only be staggered by force regardless of how much force any ability has
  • Forces damage is based off of impacting against a surface. (if the target travels its distance without hitting anything but the ground it will take no damage)
  • The more force something has the greater distance it can travel
  • Force diminishs as the target travels through the air
Combine this last bullet w/ the second and you pretty much know that the more force something has before it impacts a surface the more damage it takes. For instance a cerberus soldier that is 10 meters from a wall will take more damage then a soldier that is 20 meters if they both impact the same spot at the same angle, this much ive tested.

That explains why putting a force on top of their head and into the ground deals a substantial amount of damage. I guess that also explains why Slam seems to insta-kill enemies at times, and deal no damage at other times. Or maybe that's just it being buggy.
