Some examples: class balancing, time and credit sinks, the deliberate grindiness of the end game which is continuing in 1.4. This is then coupled with the fact that their responses to any issues are always far far too late eg. the decline in server pop.

I still like the game from levels 1-49, but GW2 does everything so much better and without the almost cynical attempts to try and keep players playing.

While I agree that class balancing is frustrating (at least from a PvE player POV), what are the other MMO's that have had better implementations?

However, from what I understand, almost all MMO's have time and credit sinks, so this was expected. Are there exceptions? Same with grinding, though I have not had that experience myself from my chosen style of play.

But after watching the trailers, reading reviews, seeing beta reports, etc, GW2 offers no appeal to me at all; looks to be a step away from more Panda's to me.And while you and others may hop that the new kid offers something different, to me, it ain't.

Old Republic is the "new kid" not Guild Wars.

My problem with Bioware and their current content schedule is that they are just adding more of the same. Where is the sandbox style space exploration/combat people want? I would resub again for SWG space combat. Instead of adding the same old boring content how about something new? How about some housing or spaceship customization? There is alot they could add that isn't necessarily Pve/pvp content that could make people happy.

Guild Wars 2 at least tried something different and guess what they sold 2 million copies already compared to TOR's 1 million in the first week. Two million even though ArenaNet stopped selling digital copies. Dynamic questing and events has done wonders for encouraging people to play together I know it's a tough concept for you to imagine but in a massively multiplayer game it makes a big difference. The World vs World vs World pvp is fantastic and is a great way to level up, get gear and well pvp. There is no way TOR's Illum could ever match the Borderlands or Eternal Battlegrounds of GW2 supporting hundreds of players across 3 servers. There is no trinity system so people are free to play by themselves a lot easier but in a group it's even better with cross class combos and with only 1-0 keys available plus F1-F4 it never gets out of hand unlike TOR which has what? 4-6 hotbars? GW2 is also gorgeous and runs very well compared to TOR which makes it possible for a lot of people to you know play together without turning the game into a slideshow.

You may not see anything because you clearly aren't trying but GW2 is different from the run of the mill themepark MMO. There are far better F2P titles like Lord of the Rings Online or Everquest 2 available I don't see TOR doing that much better once it's free. GW2 only has the one time cost for the game and that's it with no locked content at all.

I wanted TOR to succeed but Bioware has no clue what to do with the game.

They are slaves of their engine I'm sure. Hero could never handle any  ambitious sandbox features such as housing.  I remember reading around release how one of the engine's benefits is the ease with which new content can be added. I quit the game six monhs back and afaik they have added NO new playable content since, besides one new pet. This is dangerously long time for any MMO to go without new major content..even more so for one that hasn't truly found it's lot of life and direction yet.

Another thing that I can't believe is this.

“It’s not productized yet,” we told Gordon. “There are whole sections of code that is only roughed in and not optimized for performance or security. And there are very few comments and very little documentation.”

He didn’t care. “We are going to have tons of engineers. We can finish it ourselves. We’re going to want to modify your source code for our special project anyway.”
.

Look at all the problems of the engine especially the performance. The game's framerate just drops when too many people are near each other another frustating thing about the engine are the load times. My god are they long. I guess Bioware did finish the engine up on their own but if they did well clearly it's not a very good job. Look at Zenimax they are using the Hero Engine as a "whiteboard" because they are making their own inhouse engine. Why did such a large project not have it's own engine?

Yes; the GW2 Forums appear to be calm and complaint free.....

Have fun! As for me, will wait for more space msissions, more stories, and more solo activities.

Supposedly the ease to add new content on the fly is one of Hero's strong fortes. Yet, TOR team has so far been adding new content slightly less frequently than average MMO? When it comes to quickly created dynamic events added on the fly..we've seen one Rakghoul plague event and that's about it.
..:And even that was dynamic in same modest " this is pretty dynamic guys..right?:) way WoW's holiday/anniversary events are.

Game Engine specializing in adding new content to game quickly and easily + design philosophy that makes adding new content very expensive and diffcult. Tis material for jokes,

They've done two events, and added a few flashpoints since the game launched. They are adding an entire new world soon, new space missions and more other stuff in very soon. Its actually above average than most MMOs in a similar timeframe from launch. Having played more mmorpgs than I care to count, I can say this with some authority. Most other games are struggling to work out issues that made it into the live game by this point.

A notable exception would be Rift. They are hard to beat for dynamic events. That was the best part of that game. But the tradeoff was that the non event content was unexciting.

Edit: I should give some credit to Secret World coming out with its second 'issue' this week. But it remains to be seen if they can keep that rate up or its just content they didn't quite have ready for launch.

The decision team who ruined SWG. What do you expect?
Problem is, you are going in blind if you are trying to 'finish' an engine with little help from documentation--basically anyone who has taken programming 101 should know that. It's probably more efficient to just design a new engine on your own.

Another thing worth noting is that with the continuously dropping cost of server maintenance, $15/month sub fee is no longer justifiable, unless you have massive upgrades over the years and other than sub fee, you don't charge for anything else. Prime example for that would be EVE online I think. In that sense, SWTOR going F2P is a right thing to do.

Though with GW2, I kinda doubt I will come back for another storyline...

What's this about GW 2 not sold digitally anymore? Do I actually have to move and go buy it from my local game shop? x.x

ArenaNet had stopped selling digital copies for a short while so they could "expand infrastructure" but digitals sales have resumed. AN has been improving their server tech and it's awesome they are willing to lose sales to make the game run better for current players fyi it didn't affect third party retailers.

Jumping in here sorry...

City of Heroes/Villains. Powers work differently in PvP than they do in PvE or not at all. Duel specs too for switching classes depening on what you want to do. This is what Tor needs but anyone left won't listen to me. Fine, drive the rest of the pve players away as they seem want to do.

Now losing my main server to a huge merge and the mess that goes with that...I am not pleased. I think its time I bail...again. I don't see any improvements coming soon ™.

No need for apologies; a varied approach for PvE sounds great to me.

My Sorcerer lost a bit of staying power during the first major patch, and it took some rehab to tactics to survive some of the more challenging opponents (or simply delay a couple more lvls).

OTOH, my BH and Trooper improved a little during one of the latter fixes, but that was done to repair things that were gummed up earlier.

A seperate PvE balancing design would be appreciated.

But the server transfers mean little to me as I play solo. As long as admin continues to strive and restrict griefing, then I am OK with all of this. But for now, I wait to get more Space Missions and solo materials in the next major update.

They are working on more space missions and MP content. (Ops, warzones). They said SP content is too expensive and believe that is what drove everyone away. Some...Like me only play for the stories. It's what they have that's different than other MMO's. I love the FP's too...solo or grouped.

This server merge might be bad for me. I had characters on many of the servers being transfered so don't know which will survive, I made them because Canderous was waiting in line for a good while and just played elsewhere...I really can't see my Sith playing on a server named Jedi Anything...but whatever. I just hope it's not waiting in line again. I don't have an hour to wait to play...sometimes I only have 45min or an hour to play...ugh.

(Not to mention losing names that one has had since early access week, although I think most of mine are safe from that). We'll see. Image IPB

@FieryDove really if you want better writing I really think The Secret World if for you. Have you ever played the Dreamfall series? Same writer for those two games worked on TSW.

Don't know what dreamfall is?

I have a few friends who tried SW and hated it...so I didn't bother. Everyone I know already quit ToR. My Sith are in a guild with an absentee GL who plans never to return and no other playing members. Lol...so sad.

And yeah, they want me to change 4 names of of the 12 they moved. One I will not change, I have had her since early access week. I am ranting at them about it but doubt anyone cares.

I don't think I could recommend TSW for stories.

The writing is all excellent, and the cinematics are much smoother than SWTOR (the animations all flow one to the next, not like the clearly discrete animations in SWTOR), but very few of the stories really have an end. You talk to an NPC who gives you the quest and it sets the mood really well, then you go kill X of Y (or you get a sabotage or investigation mission, which are actually pretty awesome gameplay-wise), but once you've done that there's just a text box that pops up that gives you the xp, the reward and a short message from your faction saying "thanks" (usually the same canned message).

If there's a problem with SWTOR's stories it's that you can have so many quests you forget what's happening to who, TSW almost solved that problem by limiting the number of quests you can have at once but, without getting to hand them in, what's the point?

The main quest stories in TSW are probably better than SWTOR as they're happeneing, but even they can just fizzle out. After I finished the last questing zone (Transylvania, isn't it?) I returned to my faction leader triumphant and all she said was "Well done. Take a holiday.". Plus, as someone playing entirely single player content, I couldn't tell you what on earth those dreams were about, nor did they seem to have any bearing on anything else that happened; same story with the three main arcs on the different continents, they all seemed to stop just before the end as something unexpected happened and I moved on to the next area. I can only assume things start coming together in the end game?

That's my take anyway, could be it's just not for me.
