Earlier today, I lauded this game on this very forum as one of the most stable there is. So it was inevitable that tonight I ran into a hideous, gamestopping bug.
Not just any bug - the stupidest, buttdraggingest retard of a bs-incarnate bug ever seen. I'm going to summarize, here, and condense a LOT of head banging, trial-and-error, and so forth.
...
Playing MOTB, my character was ready to go through the Betrayer's Gate and on to her destiny. But it crashed. Every time, no matter what I did to prep. It just couldn't load the next module. I dug through the toolset for the specific command (ga_load_mod("Z_X1",""). Still no dice, it would crash no matter where I ran the command. And my oldest save already had the problem.
Alright, sez I, maybe the mod file is broken. It doesn't appear to be in Explorer, though. So I find an old saved game with a level 30 character in Mulsantir, and I figure "this monk has to be ready to go, right?" Sure enough, the SOG was in inventory so off I went - and went straight through the Betrayer's Gate with no problem at all.
...
So now I'm at least sure it's this character/saved game. So I look her over top to bottom and there's nothing wrong. Far stranger more modded characters have gone through that gate. My next thought is that it might be something in her inventory, so I run to a different room where there's a chest; I'm going to dump stuff into the chest until I get through the blasted gate - but it never comes to that, because there on the floor is a reminder of a glitch from days ago.
To wit - when clearing that room out, I went to pick up a remains and I couldn't "LOOT ALL" because I had no room left in my inventory, so a Brilliant Fire Essence was left behind. After giving all the various essences to Safiya and stuffing the other junk from the mummies into a Bag of Holding, I now had plenty of room, but the remains was screwed up - you could not click on the remains, and next to it was another loot bag which identified as Brilliant Fire Essence when moused over; but while you could click on the essence and get the container screen with a BFE in it, you couldn't actually take it - there was no LOOT ALL button and doubleclicking did nothing - so I just left the two buggy loot bags there.
Now, days later like I said, there was a loot bag on the floor. Just one, a remains. And when I clicked on it, there was a Brilliant Fire Essence in it, which I could take and the remains went away like it's supposed to. But now here's the thing - when I handed that BFE to Safiya, the game crashed!
Well, hallelujah! Problem found, no doubt - but what to do about it? I tried crafting it into an item - crash. I tried dividing it - crash. GRRRRR!
...
But you'll note the thread title says "THEN YOU WIN." This is how I won. I loaded up Universal Companions, added them to my roster. Then I brought in one of them (Scrollrunner Johnson, a mule character who's not played in any campaign or mod so he won't add any variables to your character or xml files). I let him pick up the offending BFE. Then I removed him from the party and saved the game. I tried the Gate again, and sure enough it still crashed, but I expected that; but I was not yet through with this experiment. Back on the desktop, I deleted Scrollrunner's ros from the saved game, and I expunged him from ROSTER.RST as well.
And what do you know
On to the Wall!
