I was really hoping to feel encouraged after listening to the interview, and sadly, I am not.
While this was certainly about fans wanting more closure to a game and characters that they loved, it was more about numerous things in the game not making any sense (i.e., organics getting wiped out by synthetics in order to save them from...synthetics? Yeah, ok....). Yes, it is difficult to say goodbye to characters we love, but it's even more difficult when the plotlines don't make sense in context of previous installments of the game.
Here's what I took away from the interview:
1. The interview should have been done with a more impartial 3rd party. Someone that did not work for BW; no disrespect to Jessica, intended.
2. The DLC is out much sooner than expected, and therefore, likely does not contain the bulk of the changes the community has asked for.
3. BW specifically stated that they did not change the endings. Their words were "we wouldn't know how to write that story", and "...change and adapt [the endings] for an audience that is looking for something that was never intended".
Wow, that last one is quite the rebuke. So, for people that have been playing since ME1, what they want from their decisions (or lack there of) in ME3, is basically wrong. Despite the fact that they were perfectly satisfied with how this was handled in ME1 and ME2, these players apparently have unrealistic expectations for ME3.
I'd argue that what BW wants in the games has apparently changed in this last installment, as so many of the decisions are forced on us and taken out of our hands.
To me, this still means we will have to choose the of the 2 or 3 options we get from devil-child. My Shepard would not accept those options.
4. BW did not state that the requirement for MP was removed to experience everything in SP. I hope they have.
5. BW/EA doesn't need to worry about displeasing the few fans that are already satisfied with the ending. Those fans simply don't have to download the DLC. Turn off auto-patch.
6. Not having an Xbox, is there some reason why BW/EA couldn't break up the DLC into multiple parts to get past the M$ download limit? ExtCut 1 + 2. Both free. Where is the the problem in that? If they were having a hard time fiting it into one download, then why not have 2?
7. From the sounds of it, this DLC will likely do nothing to fix all of the broken relationships, plot holes, and story incongruencies in ME3. From the interview, they don't seemed interested in fixing this either. It seems like it would be categorized under "things they never intended" or "thing they never wanted the game to be". They still seem to be hiding under "artistic integrity", and the "masses" are wrong.
8. Irony: Towards the middle of the interview, they talk about these characters in this galaxy that we have fought with, loved, and saved, via our decisions in all 3 games. How this will be better reflected in the new DLC.
What about decisions that we had no control over, BW? Will this DLC fix that? The poor handling of the ME2 LIs? Thane? Jacob? Having your Love Interest taken away from you without haivng any say in the matter is pretty counter to the sentiment expressed by BW in this interview. Especially considering a player's LI is likely the *most* important relationhsip they have in the game.
What about the events of Arrival that set the premise for the start of ME3, regardless of whether the DLC was played? In ME2, ME1 DLCs were assumed to not have happened. Why force them on us in ME3 and remove our ability to control that decision?
9. The tone of the interview was a bit over-the-top positive, in my opinion, and quite unapologetic...even a little bit begrudging with certain remarks. This DLC is about trying to salvage some of BW/EA's relationship with the community, but so far, they seem unwilling to give us much of what we want.
I hope I'm wrong, and am pleasantly surprised. If not, I will take my gaming dollars elsewhere.
