To me KOTOR wins, even though I didn't like 2 that much.

No way Dragonage is way more massive than Kotor.

Both are good but KOTOR gets the edge for me because I am a huge star wars fan.

well, considering that KOTOR was released 4 years ago its hardly a fair fight in terms of graphics and performance. But KOTOR wins the plot hands down.

KOTOR has one hell of a plot twist, DA's story is top notch but... nothing compared to the plot twist of KOTOR or JE. So they win.

KOTOR's story was 10x better, but the combat system sucked, plus it is 6 years old. Just hope in future DA games they can up their storytelling, so much rich lore, and amazing dialogue, yet the main narrative simply just... blows.

But they're the exact same:

Alistair when a battle begins will say (once in a while): "Down you go!"

Carth Onasi when a battle begins will say (quite often): "Down you go!"

See? Exact same game! :D

No?

No. :(

For my money, there's one main deciding factor. KotOR is Star Wars.

That means it loses by default.

You don't think Kotor has a better plot?

Dragon Age is the closest BioWare have come to recreating the epicness of KotOR (Jade Empire and Mass Effect fell way below standards after KotOR) but still isn't quite equal.

I don't think BioWare will ever properly top KotOR -- When you play it you can tell that they spent a massively long time making the game as deep, enjoyable, engrossing and as utterly superb as it is. These days, the pressures to rush games and ship them out as unpolished, unfinished products is the priority.

But anyway, Dragon Age is definitely a good and worthy effort, and a marked improvement over JE and ME, but I think we would be foolish to think BioWare will ever be as good as when they made KotOR.

You know...to me, and I suppose to quite a number of you fellow RPG players, KotOR is exactly what I had in mind as an expectation of what DA:O would be. And though overall impressed, I remained slightly disappointed about DA:O. You sir, I think had explained my feeling.

I preferred KOTOR, though DA comes close. I think it's just the star wars universe that gives it the edge, I mean becoming a grey warden is cool, but nowhere near as cool as becoming a Jedi or Sith. You can't beat lightsabers, the sound effects of the blasters, it was all incredible.

I didn't like KOTOR 2 though.

In my opinion KOTOR's plot is FAAAAAAAAR better then any of the Star Wars movies.

I don't even think it's possible to re-create such a twist like that, I haven't seen any ever since.

Oh, to OBAM, I didn't notice your previous post saying KotOR has a better plot than DA:O.

KOTOR's plot was filled to the brim with overused cliches and Star Wars is getting stale. I liked Jolee though.

Yeap, I'll give it that, it does outshine whatever Lucas came up with.

DA is set in a rather typical fantasy world with too many real world references for me to really like it (the setting). There are some refreshing exceptions, of course.
The story itself is great and the characters are all very well fleshed out.

Dragon Age is not tainted with Star Wars which makes it win.

Not to mention the Sith theme. Especially at the dark-side ending of KOTOR.

That was simply... incredible lol.

Yeah I didn't like the dwarf/elf thing that is rather overkilled.

DA:O met my expectations however, it's a quality Bioware product. The music is also awesome.

However, trying to match KOTOR... that's just unfair! KOTOR is just a one-in-a-lifetime gem.

My first thought was that KOTOR borrowed most lore and background from a preexisting franchise and Bioware probably receives more credit for the writing then they deserve in that respect. *wince*

Plot-twist and characterizations excluded.

But then I thought, how original is DA:O?

Aside from its borrowing from tons of high fantasy novels, and some other bits of classic literature *coughTolkiencough* ... It borrows a lot from KOTOR itself. Supernaturals who basically need to be constrained to be allowed to exist(Jedi/Magi), and its not necessarily evil opposite: apostates(Jolee) blood mages (Jowan) -just to mention a couple parallels.

Anyway my point is, the subject of this thread should be LotR vs Star Wars.

I'll just take Carth and Alistair and be on my way. :>

Kotor definitely had a better plot reveal than DA:O.

However, DA:O has much better fleshed out npcs and some of the cutscenes are nothing short of epic.

I'd say the winner goes to DA:O, but there will always be a place for Kotor in my heart.
