Is it really this bad in most places? I'm glad I never saw anything like this growing up. I've seen a fair share of disrespect toward elders and staff of the education system (though not to this degree and out of cruelty) and it was always promptly dealt with.

Where the hell did you grow up? This is pretty mild teasing.

I wouldn't call telling someone their family committing suicide is because they don't want to be around them is mild when a family member did committ suicide.

I don't know if the kids knew that. When I was still in highschool(2 years ago) telling someone to kill themselves or that their loved ones should kill themselves was pretty mild. It is just name-calling after all. It isn't like they bashed her head with something(happened to a friend), slashed her tires(happened to me). That **** is a lot worse than having some white kids **** at you for 10 minutes.

Skelter192 wrote...

It's better than be killed for holding you brother which other people took as them being a gay couple. This is definitely mild compared to what other stuff have happened around my area.

Yep, some people really need to look at the real world.

Are you saying that my high school experience wasn't the real world because I only had one death threat and the bullys ONLY kicked me in the nuts a few times?

No. I'm saying that donating 600k to an old lady for taking 10 minutes of verbal abuse is ridiculous. Much worse **** happens to people and they don't get a fraction of what she got.

I hope she get more . Like 2 millions.

Ok the whole money thing is stupid. The kids should've gotten detention or something. But if the internet has taught me anything that people's reaction to things are stupider than whats happening.

What occured to this woman is common-place in every school (except college) I've been to, yet I see no controversey about that.

These are my exact thoughts on the matter.

I think  some people are just more empathetic than you`re. I think it`s the whole package. She`s a 68 years old lady who probably can`t find any other frigging job than this for 15K per years. Probably has  health issue outside of her hearing problem.

Than you have those 4 little POS brats having no regards for anything other than theirs little 'instant-gratification' little game. They're so unaware. Those kids probably felt untouchables with their hormones rush pumping into their pampered pink hearth.

Than you have this old lady who just look so completetly vulnerable and that what moved me and probably moved a lot of people. You just want to get her out of her miserable life.

I know people like hers and If i could give them millions I would.

/facepalm.
Thank you for proving me right.
You don't even read whats going on a thread do you?  You just post the first knee-jerk thing you can think of.

Where was my money when the bullys picked on me?  Or anyone else.  My friend had to get tough or die.
Tell me where was his money?
This woman only gets this money because people see it.  Giving her money isn't going to help all other people around the world being picked on like 10x worse than that.

I'm glad somebody sees it my way. People are bullied everyday no matter race, orientation, or age, and they don't get anything. People have harder times than she does, and they don't get/have anything. What happened to her is truely horrific, but she doesn't deserve $600,000. I'm really hoping she donates some of what she doesn't use to a charity of some sort.

RIGHT?  It seems I should've given that kid the benefit of the doubt when he pulled out a knife on me in class that one time.  Instead of go to the police about it I should've understood that some schools have it worse and that was mild.

Now you're getting it!

In middle school, I was told to kill myself and people celebrated my father who passed away. I simply laughed it off. I've seen four year olds threaten to kill other students and I've seen one brandishing a knife (though that was taken away and the parents were furious at the teacher for taking the kid's knife).

That sounds like rotten parents.

Let's do it. I'm pretty sure we'd evoke the same reaction and get $600,000.

The only reason I say its not mild is because if they knew about the family member committing suicide and then said your family committed suicide because they couldn't stand being around you is going to far. The rest of the video was an average day in school regardless of how depressing it is that that is a normal day in school for some people.

The internet and pop culture in general are very arbitrary in what they focus on. There are child rapists everywhere, and in some countries it's part of their culture, so who cares about some guy like Sandusky? Some cases just lend themselves to grabbing the public's attention better than others. But that's fine, it's just human nature. We can't handle everything going on in the world at once, we have to be selective. But that doesn't make the subjects of our selective attention any less loathsome, if that's the reason we've selected them.

The protestation over the fact that she's getting donations seems a bit selfish and myopic. It's not like it was a court of law that ruled her worthy of compensation. It was the court of public opinion. To expect the public to be bound by a rigid standard for what constitutes 'just compensation' that is consistently applied across the board as would be the goal in a legal system, rather than follow its own nature of being selective in who it choses to sympathize with or villify, makes me wonder who really has a grasp on the "real world." In other words: life isn't fair.

Precisely.
Why are some people upset about her getting money anyway? It's not affecting you in any way,People are giving money because they want to, they felt bad for her and
wanted to colaborate. If i could donate(i can't because i don't live in a
country where people use dollars), i would because it's MY money and i
can do whatever the hell i want with my money.
The reason she's getting so much money and other people is because she has attention, the others don't, and what people saw was enough for some people to want to cooperate.
If it was something worse, people would've done the same thing.

Agreed. People cannot see everything at once, they can only see what is presented before them. Upon which they can chose to do something or act on it or not but they cannot act on something they do not know anything about. I donate to charities sometimes because I sometimes hear of a story that got my attention. It is the same thing. If you know about something and either see it or have knowledge of it then you can do something about it but I would not for example donate to charities I have never heard of or cases which have never been brought to my attention.

Scale of sympathy is also dependant on the person who see's it, someone who got bullied might have more sympathy than the guy who used to be a bully. If that one who was bullied see's something that upsets or encourages them to act in the manner of giving money to help I do not see anything wrong with that. The only time I have a distaste in my mouth regarding donations is when there is an agenda attached which comes across dubious. I know it should not matter but I won't lie that is slightly bothers me. It of course depends on the agenda. In this case people saw it and they chose to donate with no demands attached this for me is a good thing, there is no hidden or visible agenda by the donations so I think leave them be and let them carry on.

I thought of that too actually. Yesterday in fact.

The kids are in on it. They're getting a share of the profits.

Truthfully, I have to wonder how many donations were sincere and how many were just done because of the viral nature of the video and so the person could say "Yea, I donated money to that old lady that took some verbal abuse".

Because my opinion of how society acts is not very high. I've seen people be a part of KONY 2012 not out of sincerity, but because it was what was being talked about. And then just as soon afterwards, they abandon it and move onto something else.

It's the nature of humanity I guess, but it's still just as sickening and deplorable. More so is it the nature of the media.
