Personally, I found soloing DAO Origins in nightmare much easier than soloing DA2 in nightmare. Then, I found soloing DA2 on nightmare easier than soloing DA2 @ lvl 50 on nightmare. So, um, I guess I agree with your initial assessment. I hate those ninja waves too that creep on my soloist.
My lvl 50 solo Hawke is about to finish off a wave (prioritizing targets) then suddenly an assassin spawns behind me and I die. (That's why I decided using lifeward potions eventually to save time on reloads) Ugh. Load game. Yes at level 50 your Hawke can usually only take a few hits before they die due to usually having 0% armor/resistances and your enemies having higher attack values.
