While responding on another thread this occured to me. What if additional races were sold as DLC ?
They would have to be done properly of course, not just some token changes to the human dialogue here and there.

If the choice was having only a human protagonist would you pay £20 for an extra "character" ?

But how much can they really do in a DLC, It would need a new voice for all player dialogue, plus the world would have to react to being a different race and even the story would have to change to accomodate you being a different race.

I think they should design the main game so you had a choice of race built in to it from the start.

Makes you appreciate how ground breaking and visionary Origins really was.

I would buy it only if it changes the story.
I don't mean small dialog changes, it would have to be different quest outcomes and games endings.

I'll stick with Origins thank you, I'd rather not pay £20 just to get the option to play more than one race.

Also, if the only differences between races in DA3 are "some token changes to the human dialogue" like it was in Origins, I have no problem with that if it's put in DA3 as part of the main game.

Wouldn't work, wouldn't buy it. If it were to be sold, the whole story would also have to be rewritten within it to correspond with a new race, voice actors would have to be hired and re-hired, new environments, fiddling with costume designs and proportions etc.

I suppose it's better than a DLC companion but I would only buy it as a DLC if I thought that the price was reasonable considering any changes so small changes I would pay a small amount, while huge change I would pay more

Yes.  Back before Origins came out they were discussing what kind of contortions they'd have to go through in order to add another Origin, and keep in mind that there weren't THAT many times when your Origin was referenced after the opening.  It was insane.

You wouldn't just need a new voice for all player dialog, you would have to re-record a LARGE PERCENTAGE of ALL dialog.  It would basically have to be an example of the dreaded "on-disc" DLC that everyone rails against as if it were some kind of crime to have some of the bits already be on the main disc.

If they're going to do race selection, it's going to have to be a fundamental part of the game from the get go.  It's not the kind of change you can make to this type of game through DLC.

I have a better idea: Raise the price of the game $10, add all the different races in the core game, and everyone wins.

I have an even better one. Give us the same quality game that was DAO, which had race selection without DLC.

No offence OP but that is a terrible idea. Race selection should be a part of the main game and if it's not it shouldn't be sold as DLC. Why should people pay an extra $10 just to play as an elf? And where does this sort of thing stop? DLC to let you play as a female character? DLC to let you romance a companion? DLC to let you customise your character at all? As soon as the RPG genre starts to nickel and dime people for extra customisation and story elements in a similar fashion to FPS games selling you guns, racing games selling you cars etc, then that's the day RPGs die. BioWare's already pushing it with day one DLC companions that should be included with the main game (Sebastian, Javik) and this would be pushing things too far.

Or, it could breathe new life into the genre.  Don't be so narrow-minded.

If they really want to build circulation for the game, they might want to GIVE AWAY a free version without PC customization options and side-quests.  After all, people are going to pirate it anyway and doing something like this might really help build brand recognition.

Or maybe not.  But there are always more business models out there.

now a true expansion pack that gives you a race choice and that is fully intergrated for the game I might be willing to consider, but not a seperate experience like Leliana song.
