So I've heard that some people spam points into constitution for the blood mage specialization; not sure how well that would work out; wouldn't you have to have decent magic points to deal decent damage as one?

As for going blood mage, what are your guys' ideas on second specialization?

I'm thinking about starting a character that's a damager through blood magic, though not sure if I should need lots of constitution; any players willing to divulge some information?  :)

I have never actually tried to pump con on a blood mage because the way I see it its best off to just pump WIL instead and do this

1.Use all mana

2.Throw on blood magic and use about half your health

3.Take off blood magic

4.By then your mana has regenerated pretty good & use drain life to heal from blood magic

Thats just what I do , I consider it foolish to pump your secondary mana pool that hurts your character and risks their life over their real and harmless mana pool

from what ive heard putting points in const. is a waste, blood magic isnt something you run around with turned on all the time, you only use it when its needed, say when your mana is all dried up, then switch to blood magic to use your health to fuel your spells then back to magic once its refilled a bit.

You will want to pump some points into Constitution, but you also want to increase Magic to make your spells more powerful. The key to being a Blood Mage is to make your spells more powerful so that you can get more bang for the same casting cost.

Also, make Orzammar your first stop. Choose a side, and get that person's first task. Doesn't matter who it is; the whole point of choosing a side is to open up the side areas in the Proving. In the northern one, there is a dwarf who wants you to do some not-quite-legal proving matches. Agree to this, and run through all 4. You'll be given the Blood Ring, which, from what I understand, actually reduces the amount of health used to cast a spell when using Blood Magic.

Finally, I'd recommend Brelrande's strategy: Don't use it constantly; instead, use it when your Mana is low. This gives your Mana time to regenerate, while still allowing you to do damage. I recommend focusing your equipment on stuff that boost Magic or Spellpower for that strategy, and get some Mana Regen items in there as well. I can give you an equipment setup, if you'd like, that I think gives a pretty good base to work as a Blood Mage from.

Depends on your second spec. If you are the walking fortress sustained ArWar build, blood magic is your means of using any spell. So place some points in Con but don't go out of hand, magic is still your best friend.

No, definitely don't put any points into constitution. What Tonya777 said is correct: You use Blood Magic a bit, then normal mana a bit, or the other way around. Any point put into con could have been used to increase spell efficiency instead.

I would normally do this with my mage: Start out with Blood Magic active. Then Blood Wound to control, followed by some AoE and perhaps more control spells. At about half health, I switched off Blood Magic and used Group Heal. Full party health, almost full mana.

If you are truly worried about health, there is a very simple solution. There aren't a lot of good mage rings anyway, but Lifegiver (I think that's the name anyway) from Orzammar increases your health by a HUGE amount. A great ring for any character really.

Lifegiver + Blood Gorged Amulet (from the Stone Prisoner DLC) gives a grand total of +22 Constitution. If you do the math, that's +110 health.

50 health from a ring is pretty good I think. It's several free spells. The ring does other things as well, I just forgot what it is :)

To answer your second question: Arcane Warrior if you wanna tank, Spirit healer if you wanna just cast. Both work rly well with BM, just depends on what you want your character to be.

I agree with all the above, you don't wanna dump tons of pts into con, especially if you're going AW, since you will rarely take damage anyway. I don't recommend completely neglecting it though, especially early on.

I plan to go BM/AW, but I have not unlocked AW yet since I don't have any decent armor/weapons yet anyway. I'm putting pts into con for now, then when I get my gear all set up and unlock AW I will be using the respec mod and use more of the stat pts on magic instead. I usually open fights with BM->blood wounds, then hit death cloud with morrigan, then get out of BM to heal/cast regular spells. Works pretty well imo. Kills most packs of mobs with just those 2 spells. I hear this is also the best way to get initial aggro when tanking as an AW.

I've just finished a playthrough with a pure Blood Mage and didn't dump a single point into Con - seems like a waste to me. As others have said the only times you want Blood Magic on are when you want to cast a spell that requires it or you've run out of mana. Otherwise there's simply no good reason. The best part about Blood Magic is that it allows you to put less emphasis on Willpower, meaning you can really concentrate on your Magic stat for some big damage. So as a Blood Mage I'd recommend somewhere along the lines of a 2:1 Magic:Willpower ratio, if not a higher one, for all of your stats. I can't see why you'd need anything else.

No reason to sacrifice magic for con. I sacrificed the points I normally put into willpower for con.

Thanks for the responses guys. :) I think I'll be taking Blood Mage as my second specialization after Spirit Healer. :) I'll keep an eye out for the ring and amulet.
