I'm playing through starting at BG1 and my party is currently my Ranger/Cleric*, Imoen**, Khalid, and Jah. My original plan was to play with just Imoen and myself (and just use NPCs for their quests), but I have the NPC
pack installed (for EasyTutu), so I'm having a hard time letting Khalid
and Jah go. Now, I will eventually be picking up Minsc and Dyna, but for a while it will be just the four of us.
I'm using EasyTutu, so I'm currently DW morningstars, Imoen is backing up on the bow, but I'm a little ambivalent about how to use Khalid and Jah and which should be my backup tank. If I use Jah, both my casters/healers are up front, which probably isn't smart. If I use Khalid, I lose a potentially great archer (which is pretty cherry in BG1). Once I get Minsc, the problem will solve itself, but what should I do with the two of them the meantime?
Here are a couple ideas I had:
1) Two handed weapon, halberd and bows. R/C is really the only tank, but Khalid backs up (with halberds when needed), but for the most part he's bowslinging and we're going with just one tank. Jah is on scimitars (there's a +1 pretty early with UB) and with a shield, and backing up more often than Khalid.
2) Sword and board. Get Graywolf's sword and keep him up front with me. Give him axes and some throwers for the occasional times I have him hang back. Jah is back on slings.
3) TWF for Khalid. Otherwise, same as #2, but with less AC.
* For the record, I'm using the Divine Remix mod, which basically means the R/C won't have Iron Skins or Insect Plague, or really any other high level druid spell (and even low level in some cases). My main reason for the R/C is for flavor (the Ranger class has more personality than Fighter) and for the Ranger stronghold in BG2 (which is more interesting than the Fighter or Cleric stronghold).
** I will be dualing her to a mage, which is one of the main reason for initially playing with just her in the party. A small party means she'll get her thief skills back much quicker. However, now, I'll try to pace it so that she duals (L6, I think) while we are clearing the outside areas, and hopefully she'll get her thief levels back before Cloakwood. If now, we'll do Werewolf Island before the mines.

Less armour class is better and a tank normally stands up the front getting swung at so not the best spot to put a spell caster. A typical warrior tank gets to -10 but -11 is possible if you do the lower Durlag's Tower and as an example at that level a greater Doppleganger needs a roll of 20 to hit you.
The best weapon in the game is the +5 Defender but of your four party members only Khalid would be able to use it, IMO Ajantis makes an considerably better tank (specially at the start) because of his shield but your group will struggle with so many melee users trying to all attack at once... it’s your game so enjoy.

IIRC, the Defender is Drizzt's, and I won't be killing/PP him. The thing is that Khalid is both a better tank and archer than Jah, but Jah is probably a better tank than she is archer (as she can only use slings/daggers. However, like I said, putting both healers on the front line is probably suicide.

My apologies for what is arguably a late reply, but I felt like answering the question regardless.
It's hardly suicide to have both divine casters up front if you throw them into the fray one at a time. Have your protagonist take point and then have Jaheira jump after whatever is attacking the protagonist. Meanwhile the remaining party members are firing away with ranged weapons. The main tank is swarmed, which is fine, and the secondary tank has a bit of attention, while nobody are bothering the ranged damage dealers.
If you really need to cast some form of healing then it's not impractical that the healer is already right beside the character that needs to be healed. If you can get your AC down to -10 or so then it really isn't hard to cast spells, not even on the front line. You'll probably have to use a shield in tough fights but that is fairly manageable. Jaheira won't get quite as good an AC since her dex isn't that great in BG1, but then she's also just the secondary tank.
As long as the rest of your party can do enough ranged damage, the setup should work just fine. And Khalid and Minsc on composite long bows should help quite nicely, even if Imoen and Dyna aren't awesome with ordinary weapons.
Just remember to save often and if you're getting frustrated by spellcasters casting status spells on both your divine casters, have Jaheira use her sling instead and keep her back among the rest of the party.

If you installed the druid portions of Divine Remix, Jaheira can no longer wear better than leather armor, and thus becomes useless as a tank. She has to use sling and spells or she's going to get killed a lot.
I'd get rid of the Divine Remix, or at least turn off that part of it, so Jaheira can wear plate again like she's meant to. Wearing plate, she is an excellent tank or long-handled backup (spear/staff).

Hmm. Didn't consider Divine Remix. Never used it. From what I've read, it seems like a giant nerf of divine casters and they're weak enough as it is. Limiting fighter/druids to leathers would seem to be yet another nerf.

Khalid is a good tank in my opinion...
Well untill he takes 1 damage and starts running like a chicken.

I have a same party. Using Khalid as a tank, Jaheira as a back up.
