NPC ambient animations

This was probably answered years ago and is archived, but I'm having a bit of trouble animating NPCs.  Basically, I need the correct combination of spawn flags so that the NPC will wander around the interior area, interact with placeables (tagged NW_PLACEABLE as in spawn script descriptions) and open a door to get to a NW_STOP waypoint.  Depending on the spawn flags I've set (NW_FLAG_AMBIENT_ANIMATIONS, NW_FLAG_IMMOBILE_AMBIENT_ANIMATIONS, NW_FLAG_SLEEPING_AT_NIGHT, NW_ANIM_FLAG_IS_CIVILIZED,  and NW_ANIM_FLAG_IS_MOBILE_CLOSE_RANGE) I get some success except with going through doors in the area.  I'd appreciate any insights as to what should be done.  Thank you.

The NWN ambient system is largely defunct in NWN2, in particular the animation functions don't consistently work, and you have to use the PlayCustomAnimation function instead.  There are a couple of systems floating around here that handle ambient animations, with kamalpoe's Commoner AI project being a good place to start.
