I don't find any of the teammates "useless"--to me, the challenge is in using them properly. So it really depends on my PC's class and skills which teammates I use and which tend to sit in camp a lot.

Whichever teammates duplicate what my PC does generally tend to sit around: when I played a mage, Morrigan sat in camp. When I played a rogue archer, Leliana sat in camp. In my 2h warrior playthrough, Sten's been sitting in camp.

Dog tends to sit in camp the most besides whatever teammate is my duplicate, not because I don't think his skills are awesome--I've grown to appreciate them. However, I really prefer the interactions between the humans better.

Thus far, I've always used Alistair, but then I haven't tried a sword-and-board PC yet. I use Zevran quite often (even in my archer rogue playthrough), as I think he's a monster in a fight. Oghren I love because he's hilarious--if I didn't hate most of the Orzammar questline, I'd go for him earlier in the game!

If you use the 'no starting abilities' mod you can reconfigure any companion from the time you pick them up. Sten and Oghren both work a LOT better as two-weapon fighters with high Dex or even as sword and shield guys. The 2-H weapon deal is pretty useless unless you are constantly micro-managing it, and even then it's mostly an invitation to get carved up.

BS. The 2hander tree is fine. I've built a mess of them and bring Sten along on every playthrough. Go ahead and think that going in at lvl 22 and while being COMPLETELY IMMUNE to all stuns and knockdowns doing an auto attack for 100, chaining into sunder arms to cut off the animation resulting in another 100 damage on the first sunder arms swing then 140 crit on the 2nd. Mighty blow 140, crit blow 150, auto attack 140,  sunder armor 100, 140, and throw in an aoe 100 damage plus knock down sweep while stunning guys all along the way due to stunning blows making every attack a possible stun is an invitation to get carved up. I'll continue to cake walk through the game and actually have fun with a class that requires more interaction than hitting the same 2 tactics every fight.

The amount of misinformation spread about 2handers on this forum is absolutely ridiculous.

Morrigan, Sten, Dog, Zevran, Shale are all useless.

Leliana, Alistair and my warrior are the best.

The rest are just normal...

I wouldn't have been quite so aggro about it, but yes - People in general do not understand how to build or set up 2h warriors appropriately.

None of the team mates are always useless - you just have to be able to spec them well. There will always be one or two that overlap with your character though... that's to be expected.

Sten. Used him once, changed him back quickly again.. Attempting to change him to a tank kind of failed.. Alistair was just a lot better. And I still don't like Sten much, so...

I hate Zevran the most, but I have to say Sten is the most useless character. I would say: Sten, Zevran, Dog, and Wynne are the characters I never use. I used Shale on my first playthrough to kill some dragons. I can't go without Alistair, Morrigan, or Leliana they are the most useful.

sten?

wtf are you drunk? Sten is a DPS beast with a 2 hander. People making him a tank must be suffering from mental problems.

Too many people underestimate dog. He is a great DPS with awesome CC. Although he will get outclassed later in the game, just download the godamn extra dog slot mod

Shale is the "most" useless. his DPS sucks and hes a crappy tank. However he provides good buffs when hes STANDING STILL

Depends on the character I'm playing, but in general, I find Sten, Dog, and Leliana to get the most camp time.

I brought leliana along to explore the archery talents, and to get the sharpshooter achievement, and it sucked. By the time she got off an Arrow of slaying shot, Alistair and my DPS rogue had pretty much killed everything. Archery, like 2 handed talents, take too damned long to execute. A DW can wipe the floor clean before a 2h or archery skill is used.

Shale I found useless as a tank, but her stone aura buffs rock. Morrigan deals great damage, but I have to manage her alot to keep her from friendly firing my party with the cold cones and blizzards. Wynne is a necessity for major battles, because of her ability to revive fallen characters. But I can pretty much play fine without mages at all, if I'm playing rogue.

Zevran is a friggin murder machine, and my favorite for DPS. If I'm not playing rogue, he's the only one I respect so he can open locks. Otherwise, he deals more damage, at lightning speed, than anyone else, save my rogue, who is naturally more powerful. Oghren is second for DPS. I take him along if I need someone who can take more damage than Zev. Alistair is my favorite tank and most used party member. He takes massive amounts of damage, and with shield wall and shield mastery, he's unstoppable. I remember on my first playthrough, when I didn't know **** about the combat system, towards the end, I checked everyone's stats. he had only once had an injury. He needs the least managment of any of the characters. And I never have had to respec him.

So generally, I almost always have Alistair and Zevran, and then either Wynne, Morrigan, Oghren, or Shale for the last slot.

if we went by who gets the most camp time in my game its probably Sten, Morrigan, Oghren and Shale. I have the Dog slot mod (which means he goes everywhere with me). I always use Alistair and Wynne. The third slot is usually zevran or leliana depending on what I want them to do. For mellee dps definitely Zevran is a murder machine. Plus hes pretty easy going and doesn't get all up in my grill like Sten does every time I do something not in his idea of what blight fighting should be. In fact though he has some funny lines, I only take Sten along for those dialogues. I just don't care much for him. Morrigan is a **** who apparently takes offense at anything I do that doesn't fit her Darwinian philosophy so she gets a lot of camp time too. Oghren I just get too late in the game (As I hate the dwarf quests and always do those last. Frankly sticking my head in the car door and slamming it a few times is more fun than dealing with whiny assembly morons) and I have never been able to get his approval much higher than about 50.

While I CAN say I don't dislike any of the companions there are some I just don't care to have in my groups much.

Dog.

I was tempted to put one of the two token rogues in here that the game pretty much bludgeons us into bringing along for loot, but I was sorely disappointed with Dog.

Instead of acting as a ranger pet for the main character, Dog took up his own character slot, when he's inferior to everyone else - even Oghren.

I love having Dog with me because of the loot he can obtain and due to the amusing moments (Take him into Denerim, and you'll see what I mean), but he's just not worth the slot that I might use to bring a horribly incompetent lock-picker along instead. With so many more adequate warriors, Dog would have made sense as a choice to bring along in the slot next to your own, not as a fully fledged fighter. While I understand that this would make the Ranger class unfeasible for Player Characters, surely people would understand that having a dog on every PC is superior to only a Ranger having pets.

I used every body and criss cross them depending on personel quest.....I wish the PC could have more than 3 little sentences through 70 hours of play.....I tried a few times to leave the PC in camp, that didn't work...BUMMER!!!!!!!

Sten and Oghren. Killed Zevran during my first playthrough as a rogue.

I don't have Shale as my DLC got borked up.

But for what it's worth, Sten is getting another chance during my 3rd playthrough and from the looks of it, he's hitting quite hard with that 2h blade of his. Too bad I don't like his charachter though.

Best. Thread-necro. Ever...

Also, Zevran and Wynne were utterly useless to me. Always gave Morrigan a bit of the healing tree and never needed Zevran for anything other than an achievement and have since killed him in all my later playthroughs.

None of them are useless, unless you build them and equip them poorly. They are what you make them. Some suit different styles of play better than others, but all of them can be incredibly useful.

I found all the members useful in their own way. Personally I rarely use Oghren/Dog/Leliana.

However it's not to say I dislike their characters, I like them just fine, I just like the others more. Lately I've been using Leliana and if you upgrade her bow and bard skills she's epic. I'm playing a rogue so I open my own locks. Zevran is epic, he rarely dies and does good damage.

Alistair is not that great at fighting FOR ME, he doesn't do much damage. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with him. :(

This.

All companions have their strengths and weaknesses. How useful they are depends on how properly you build their stats (and how well you equip them), and whether they compliment your playstyle.

I would have said Zevran a few months ago, but after playing with him for a bit, I've come to realize he's pretty savage if you set him up right.

Pre-Respec mod, I would say the Secret Companion. Great dialogue; mediocre warrior.

Your fault.Overwhelm is one of the best skills in the game(only dragons and ogres resits it). Also, the dog is fast.Excellent magekiller and also able to hurt even bosses seriously with it. My dog killed Arl Howe.On hard difficulty. I have to laugh when he said then "I deserved more".
