He can't tank, he can't dps, he just dies. Over and over, dies.
Huh, whats that? Sten is down again? Oh well. Don't waste any more injury kits on him.

Dedicated melee DPS is fairly pointless, unless your main character is the one doing it. That's a lifestyle choice. Up close, an NPC fighter should be able to either 1) rock at tanking or 2) have some kind of a secondary utility. Al is the most competent tank in the game, and either one of the rogues can fulfill the melee DPS role (Zevran more so, unless you respec Leliana using the ring of rebirth or something similar...). Even Dawg has the secondary utility of item fetching and all the doggy tricks like Overwhelm and AoE stun. Sten, sadly, loses out further because of his 1 specialization point... he really should have been a berserker to begin with.
Oghren is pretty much a Sten-clone, with all accompanying issues...
Most useful party members depend, of course, on your main's class and spec... It's hard to say no to Wynne of course, and unless you can bust locks and traps yourself, you need a rogue. I really wish you could have five or six people instead of four...

And come on, dog is an amazing party member in the early and mid game, against humanoid enemies and especially darkspawn and archers he is perfect. charge - overwhelm - dread howl, he saved my rogue with those abilities many times,
So that leaves Zevran, in combat i never used him because with me as a rogue he had no place in the party, as a warrior Leliana was better to have for her bard and archery talents, and as a mage Leliana again was more useful. So Zevran is most useless for me actually, still i had some good laughs, and when i miss my time as a rogue which is a lot, i bring him along with my warrior sometimes to backstab and stealth - my two favorite things to do in DAO.

Leliana almost defeated the darkspawn solely, as I used her bow to lure small groups of enemies, or killing them 1 at a time.

Would be interesting to know what kind of characters you would enjoy more? Apart from being more round in terms of change of personality I mean. Ok some characters can be associated with a certain set of stereotypes. Then again which character in any story/movie is completely free from that? Also I'd say the way a player sees or even is annoyed by a felt stereotype being represented by a character sais more about the player than the NPC.
I think one of the major problems with DA:O characters is that in attempting to avoid the stereotypes, the characters ended up flat. The fantasy story stereotypes are there for a reason. It gives a basic level of character depth and a basic motivation for the character. Sure, sometimes it is painfully predictable but the stereotypes are closer to reality and "people" than the attempt at no stereotype.
I'll take Morrigan and Leliana as examples. It was obvious BioWare wanted to avoid the whole here is the "kekeke innocent girl that you're supposed to like" and here is there "firebreathin **** badass dominatrix girl that you're not supposed to like but secretly do anyway". In Morrigan they took Aerie and Viconia and smashed them together in an attempt to create a deeper, more interesting character. Instead, you have a character that is never resolved. Maybe this is an attempt to lay groundwork for Dragon Age 2, but it results in a character that is unsatisfying. They tried to make Morrigan this girl that grew up in isolation so is "innocent" while not being "innocent".
If you go back and read the developer comments about Baldur's Gate 2, you'll note that Aerie was the character that drew the strongest reaction from the players even though she was a blatant "innocent damsel in distress" character. And that's that made her a character I remembered, and a character I liked. Instead of trying to avoid the stereotype, they just went for it and did it wonderfully. A character that draws as strong a reaction from the playerbase (people either loved her or hated her, there was no indifference) as Aerie despite the stereotype is a character that displays masterful writing and character depth. They took a stereotypical character and made you remember her.
Everyone remembers Minsc and Boo 11 years later (first appearance Baldur's Gate 1). Can you say you'll remember Zevran or Sten or Ohgren 11 years from now? We're all still able to shout "butt kickin' for goodness!" with passion. Can you recall a Zevran quote? I can't. And I last played the game less than a month ago. I last played Baldur's Gate 2 probably a good 8 years ago.
That's the sort of characters I liked and enjoyed and would love to see again.
Go for the eyes, Boo.
I have to agree that the characters from BG2 were far more memorable (except for valygar maybe). And that also includes all sidecharacters and antagonists.
I don't see what u mean with stereotypical tho. Maybe Aerie was a little of a stereotype
(altho I already disagree there) but that's not what made the characters in BG2 great.
Viconia and Jaheira had great depth to their characters. They had very interesting and well developed background stories and all characters were very believable. No stereotypes there, just plain great character development.
And I also liked that the NPCs were very different. In their skillset and their personality.
In DAO I have the feeling that the characters are all very shallow without any depth, with Morrigan being the only exception and I just don't like her personality. <_<

The least useful for me is Zevran, followed by Leilanna. Leilanna I use soley for lock picking. I would use her for her bard abilities, but she is wasted dps imo. I don't use Dog too much either.

BG2 is a different animal, really, do you remember Lilarcor ?...
I just hope that the jump from DA to DA2 can be as big as from BG to BG2....

At least Alistair can tank(champion) and help in Mage situations(dispel and the mana drain every hit is useful), and Oghren can DPS and tank(champion).
Sten can only either tank or DPS.. and isn't terrible good at support either.

Most useful is Wynne. Without her, the game would be extremely difficult.

Honestly, I think Alistair is the most useless character because he dies most often. The only time he's useful is when I could use his dispel ability. I hear a lot of complaints of Sten but so far he's the most useful damage dealer in the group. I geared him up with the dragon plate armor set and now he's ultra awsome.

froom a role play perspective I find wynn to be the weakest mostly cause I can not relate to that character or maybe cause I dislike someone constatly passively agressively belittling and contridcting everything I say or do. I am guessing its mostly both of those put together. she reminds me of a true grandma "stop driving so fast" 2 seconds later "hurry up or we will be late"

Just by curiosity, who is or are the most(s) useless team mate(s) ?
Morrigan and Zevran. Followed by the most amiable Sten. Then the king of social graces, Oghren.

Crap equipment, poor choice of spells, can't heal himself, and no access to inventory for potions.
I can get him through to the final confrontation in the Fade, just barely, but he dies every time there.

Sten and Ogren are the same guy and both are equally useless as both a tank or an offensive weapon add to that they have the least interesting party dialogue and I'll never take them with me again.
Oghren is the funniest guy ever!
sten being blunt is actually quite good.

sten must be dragged around for him to grow on you and most people just dump him because he is so boring in the beginning.
Oghren is the same as sten and i picked him up quite late so he didn't take over for sten.
shale is wonderfull the best of your companion except for a mage if your aren't one yourself.
