It just plainly sucks :S It doesn't have nearly as many stuns as the other chars, no real AWESOME abilities, if you want a dog, make a rogue ranger and summon one of those howling dogs.
First playthrough I used most chars but the dog. I tried a few times, but it lacked convos, it lacked anything special in combat, it lacked out of combat abilites. Both Sten, Alistair and Shayle make better Tanks, which was the only thing it could do in combat...

Sten and Oghren just have no dps (some people disagree, but I think 2-hand is a joke in this game). Sten is worse than Oghren because I don't like his character, I can never get that interested in him. I have gotten him all the way up to 100approval but the only interesting things about him come from the travel dialogues, which I never see because I don't use him. Oghren is at least funny at times.
Dog I don't use because towards the end of the game he just isn't as useful as fully geared companiosn. But his stun in the beginning is nice. Then Zevran never really has a place, because he isn't 'that' amazing. Assassin/duelist rogues are great as the PC because you get more talents/skills/stats, but as a companion he is a bit lacking because you can never get that final talent you want (or the fact that he can't open any locks, because picking deft hands is a waste for him).
Wynne is really good, but I generally just pick Morrigan who gets the base heal and regen/rejuve. Alistair is a great tank later in the game, Shale a great tank in the beginning. Lelianna can open locks, has good ranged damage (yay pulling) has bard songs, and can be speced ranger for an extra body/distraction/tank.
So, in terms of who I use, most to least, it is:
PC, Morrigan, Alistair, Leliana, Shale-Wynne, Zevran-Dog, Oghren, Sten.

Not because he's a crappy fighter, or anything, but because he's a butt. A stick in the mud. You'll have a more enjoyable game experience stabbing him to death in Lothering while he's still in the cage.

Alistair goes with me all the time - everyone else gets chosen based on the quest and whether they've annoyed me recently

Shale doesnt even get to camp, as someone else commented (*SPOILER!!!*) has no RP place in the world and stays in Hornleath (?) for my games.
Not true. Dwarves used golems for centuries. I also think it is good, that Bioware included some more unique characters with special sets of skills instead of only making stock-characters. Apart from that it is your choice who you bring along in your party.
Not true?? Dwarves havent been able to make Golems for centuries, yet when you waltz into Orzammar with Shale as a companion not one dwarf bats an eyelid. Nevermind making your hero prove themselves by undertaking petty tasks, the Assembly should bow down and make them monarch
I stand by what I said, there is no RP place in the world for Shale, but shall add, as is it currently designed.
PS This whole forum is spoiler-friendly, you may want to refrain from coming in altogether rather than coming in and demanding others edit their posts.

sten btw has 2 epic moments, first, when you find the child in redcliffe that hides in the closet (i don't remeber exactly, but it wass sth like "a little human, we should burn it"), and second, when you apporach the urn of andraste ("you found a trash can")

Invest a few of Zevran's points into lockpicking, pump up his Cunning, and he can handle any lock you throw him at.
For me, I'd say Oghren's the most useless. Or not so much useless as a detraction, because you're obliged to take him with you when you go into the Deep Roads. He's got hilarious dialogue and his character is a riot, but as a party member? Not one of my favorites, no.

Just by curiosity, who is or are the most(s) useless team mate(s) ?
For now, I found Sten very useless for me, I mean people used him as a tank (I hope So), but now there is Shale

You should've played "hide the trouser snake" with him back at the camp. Easiest of any character to raise your approval with, and without using any gifts, either!bzombo wrote...

Unless you consider your body a gift... :innocent:

Am I the only one who finds Leliana useless besides her lockpicking skills? If I need range, I'm going Morrigan. If I want close combat rogue skills, it's Zevran. Is there some key skill that Leliana has that I'm missing?
She's a bisexual nun. And, so far, the dog is the one I least use.

Sten is just dull and boring for me. He does have some "funny" moments but thats hardly an argument for him because every character has some "funny" moments.
Oghren is a dwarf and ever since BG1, I can't play dwarves. I hate the way they look, and the way they move, I just can't handle it. Drives me up the wall. Hate playing dwarves or gnomes.
So for me Oghren and Sten are the most useless.

The problem I found with DA:O is exactly what you said. A mixed character leads to discovery except in DA:O, that discovery never actually comes to pass.
It's why I wanted to like Sten in the beginning. I wanted to believe there was a chance there was something under that melancholy gray, but there wasn't. It was just grunt grunt cookies grunt chauvinism grunt. He was an empty shell. Morrigan is like Sten. Cynicism cynicism cynicism oh hey boobs cynicism. Leliana became a stereotype after "discovery". The standard running from your past character. Alistair became the standard "I wanna be cool and slum" noble kid trying to be a commoner.
The only character that had any of the "discovery" deal was Shale and as a result, Shale was the only character that I didn't find annoying or flat. Shale would most likely be the character remembered if DA:O has any legacy.
That's a far cry from Baldur's Gate. There is still much love for Minsc and Boo. Much love for Edwin/Edwina. And obviously strong reaction as previously mentioned for Aerie. You remembered Viconia because you could change her.
It's a fantasy game in the end. You want extremes in personality because those extremes are what makes you remember characters. These people are supposed to be the heroes of the fantasy setting they are in. They are not just normal people. This holds true for even the re-telling of real events. You don't study World War 2 and learn about some random soldier on the front line, but you'll learn about the Rommels and the MacArthurs and the Pattons.
To me it looks like this is all just a comparison by you of DA:O to Baldur's gate. From someone who has never played BG, your comparisons are as flat as you say the characters are.
As for your methodology of studying history, I'm beginning to understand why you believe what you do. The most interesting characters of WW2 were people nobody has ever heard of before. Or rather, until someone finally told their tale. People like Oscar Schindler, or my aunt (who was taken from her hometown in Poland and picked to be a domestic by an SS officer for the remaining years of the war). WW2 affected everyone on earth, just about, and it's the Rommels and MacArthurs who get all the credit, but in fact, it is the heart of the 50 million who died that makes the war what it was. And maybe the heart of the hundreds of millions who didn't, but in each small way played their own part.
Big heros and extreme people may make for the most ink on paper. they may even make the history texts. But when you get to my age (my hair is more like Wynn's than my avatar here), you realize that most of the history you learned in school was 2 dimensional and that things were rarely the way they were portrayed. History is also a product of the winner.
It is a game, but to me, it doesn't seem as if you've explored the characters to their full. And I don't know very many people who actually live up to the impression that others have of them. Most very smart people do very dumb things that they pay for all their lives. Most very good people have at least one bad thing hiding in their closets. Just because those things don't make the history books doesn't mean they don't exist. What you're looking for in characterization, well, maybe it's beyond the budget of a game studio, or maybe it's just unrealistic.
That said...
I don't much care for Oghren, tho he has some funny lines. I don't need to have someoen fart or belch every time I try to give them an instruction. He dies more often than my tank or even my mage did. And I've never, ever wore armor as a mage. I don't like Morrigan for her attitude, but I take her with for her skills sometimes, anyway. But Morrigan is conflicted if she actually gets to like you because she's never really had a friend before. That doesn't seem too very 2 dimensional to me. I know people like that.
Alas, it is interesting to see what others think.
I like dog a lot, but toward the end game he isn't as useful and I can't have him as a 5th slot. As a ranger, I like how hardy my summon'ed wolf/bear are, and if I could put dog in that slot, I'd take him everywhere. Sometimes I take him back to find certain articles of armor..... in certain places....
Keeping in mind, my opinions are based on the idea that if I went to the bar for a drink, I'd be the designated driver.

If I play mage I just replace Morrigan with Leliana to open chests.
Its a win group for me and the one I am most used to after 9 playthroughs.

Everyone seems to love her for her healing and what not and yet i've never found use for any heal beyond the first tier spell. Health pots are abundant and cheap but i barely use those either.
My current and second playthrough (hard) i'm playing PC(rogue), Sten, Morrigan and Shale. Morrigan is specced into the ice tree and other crowd control lines, using her pretty solely as a disable, with the level 1 heal to keep Shale topped up as tank. I never find need for any more healing than that, i even did Flemeth without any healer (Wynne was pretty corpsey by this time) and took Leiliana instead, used about 10 or so health pots keeping people up but my rogue just tears through everything and the fight was over pretty fast.
My first playthrough was as a mage, went blood/aw, and once again no more than the basic heal was needed. I had wynne for the circle tower part and i can see how some might like her for just leaving to do her own thing and concentrate on dps, but with a third dps stuff rarely lives long enough to warrant a healer anyway!
Third playthrough i intend on playing at hardest difficulty, as a warrior, with 0 mages.

I think Morrigan is the most useless.
I used shape shifting once simply out of curiosity, and never used it again.
Didn't even bother with her hexes.
Admittedly her cold spells did come in handy occasionally, as did the fact I gave her a heal spell, but she was always the weakest link in my party.
So why have her in my party?.....because without a doubt she is the most interesting character in the game.
get her spell power up to 100+ lots of entropy, primal and spirit and she is a goddess
if it wasnt for her lock picking i would say lilianna is the most useless, maybe im just not using an archer right but my lilianna lacks stamina, health and a clue
