I think Morrigan is the most useless.
I used shape shifting once simply out of curiosity, and never used it again.
Didn't even bother with her hexes.
Admittedly her cold spells did come in handy occasionally, as did the fact I gave her a heal spell, but she was always the weakest link in my party.

So why have her in my party?.....because without a doubt she is the most interesting character in the game. ;)

get her spell power up to 100+ lots of entropy, primal and spirit  and she is a goddess

if it wasnt for her lock picking i would say lilianna is the most useless, maybe im just not using an archer right but my lilianna lacks stamina, health and a clue

Hmm, yeah I don't know. My Leliana always had a bard song up, and a good portion of the time had a ranger animal out, and still had enough stamina to do her shots. Then if she got really low I just rejuvenated her from Morrigan.  To be completely honest, on my last playthrough, Leliana was beastly. She didn't have the best damage, but she had a TON of utility, which was perfect.

Leilanna or Zevran. Inclined towards Leilanna more, because her personality is slightly more irritating than Zevran's.

For my playstyle, I like playing with 2 mages (one being my PC) and a shield tank orShale.   For the 4th slot, Leli dies a lot in the early part of thegame but is great later as a ranger, whereas Dog is good in the early game and weak later.  Sometimes I'll play 3 mages and a tank; and sometimes 2 mages plus Alistair and Shale.

I have, what, 6 warriors to choose from (including Dog)?  and one party slot, 2 at most.
I suppose I could respec any of them, and I intend to play all of them a while for the banter, personal quests, etc...

But any character who must be respecced probably qualifies as among the most useless (no matter how interesting they are, that's a different topic).  So for me:

Sten (2h sux, only 1 spec point)
Oghren
Zevran (a rogue who can't open chests, assassin line is meh)
Loghain

(edit: forgot Loghain)

:o lies!

the dog rocks so much!!! he has CC, debuffs, and OVERWHELM that abilitity is totally amazing! and i love the animation!!!  not to mention he is so cute and can find you nice presents.

I think i rarely use Ogren (only for comedy value and for "A paragon of her kind".

My party setup it's usually Wynne, Morrigan, Alistair and myself. (this is my team A)

Sometimes i feel comfortable playing with leliana, morrigan, shale and myself.

or: Dog, Alistair, Zevran, myself.

I probably am the odd one out here and found most to be annoying.

Leliana - Okay. We get it. You're supposed to be a French girl. You don't need to say Orlais 1000 times in conversation to emphasize the French-ness.

Sten - Again, we get it, you're supposed to be a hard-ass or whatever. Show some level of depth. You could probably replace most of Sten's dialog with a grunt and you'd get about the same character.

Zevran - Right Said Fred did it first. He's too sexy for his shirt. Get your own bit.

Wynne - If I wanted to be nagged about stuff I was doing, I would just call mom and tell her I started doing drugs.

Dog - Bark. BarkBarkBark BarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBark. SHUT UP.

Morrigan - Your like meter is at 100. We're BFFs. You should already know i'm not going to Wayne Brady the next person I see. Why are you surprised? At least you have boobs I guess?

[...]

ROTFL

Besides, I made up my mind. Dog is definitely the worst of all characters. Not only doesnt he have any dialogues, there is also no way to ever vary his build at all, even with the Respec mod. Dog just stinks.

Shale might have the same problem, but I wouldnt know, I strictly avoid all DLCs.

I plan on using Dog as much as I can in one of my next playthroughs, always wanted to use him but didn't because I was more interested in the other characters.

So lets see, so far I have done:

PC Rogue Archer (Ranger/Duelist) (will be deleting him) with Alistair, Morrigan, then switched between shale/dog/leliana/zevran for dps.

PC Mage with Morrigan, Alistair, Leliana/Wynne

PC Warrior (duel wield champ/temp) with Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana <---- that was such an easy playthrough, I never once wiped on normal, and didn't have many problems whenever I upped to hard/nightmare. All the characters maybe died six times each at max, and it was usually to me not paying attention. Defenitly a pro group.

Right now I am doing:

PC Warrior (2-hand Reaver/Berzerker) with Alistair,Zevran, Morrigan

Will do:

PC Rogue (Assassin/duelist) with Alistair, Morrigan, then not sure on 4th. Might try Sten/Oghren

PC Archer (Ranger/Bard) (Replacing my first playthrough) with Alistair, Morrigan, Dog.

1 - I have found no use for Wynne yet. My party always struggle when she's in it.

2 - Alistair. Just hate him. Annoying and in need of constant healing. A shame he is the only non-dlc tank/shield&sword option for most of the game.

3 - Dog. I have absolutely no interest in animals and even less in watching them ****** on trees and showing my what random half-chewed things they've found.

There should have been an extra dwarf and elven companion. Humans are boring.

If you position Zevran behind the enemy, he crits almost every hit. He's one of my favourite team members to bring along. Especially for his Assassin skillz.

With the possible exception of boss fights....if you are taking so long to kill things that you have time to position the rogue behind an enemy in order to backstab it, you are doing something wrong.

Zevran eeeeeasily wins in my book, since there's no "Get behind the target you idiot" AI tactic, you either gotta play as him or kick him to the curb. He doesn't even have pick locks, (my #1 talent to get for my rogues) and the earliest I've managed to get him is at lvl 10 already heavily invested in talents I don't want him to have.

morrigan is the best mage in the game (except for main character), you can use the cone of cold ability to stop large groups while Alister shatter them with shield bash also you can use morrigan to use stone fist and shatter another enemy it depends the magic combination you use the hex spell are really good with drain life almost doubles it. Wynne i don't like her, i can simply buy or make some health poultice and there she is useless. the dog its pretty cool early in the game you can tell him to look for stuff and in my case always brought nice stuff to sell or to give as gift

the first time i finish the game i was an assassin with Alister (Templar+champion), morrigan (with primal and entropy), and shale (pretty effective when you use blizzard with morrigan and then trow the 3 rocks at the group)

I have 2 good reasons I don't like morrigan.

1. Shapeshifting... most...useless...spec...ever
2. She leaves your party at the end if you ever want to sacrifice anyone.

But all in all I still think Zev sux more.

Aren't a lot of you confusing your personal likes/dislikes (with a drop of homophopia) with usefulness.

A drop? More like a flood. People seem to find Zev shallow because they take his mask at face value and don't get to know him. His banter is great, and he is far more useful and realistic than Leliana, who drones on and on about her religion. She's almost as annoying as Wynne with her morality lectures.

I suspect a lot of player put heavier armor on Zev which gives him a stealth penalty that makes enemies more likely to see him. He needs a full line of stealth for maximum sneakage, but I'm betting most players don't go there. Zev is not a tank, he's a spiker.

My team was Alistair as tank ( took Champion as second spec ), Dog ( melee DPS / off-tank ) and Leliana (ranged dps )
Main character was Mage ( Shapeshifter [ worst idea ever ] and Soul Healer ) with nearly all destruction spells.

Dog is just awesome with his dread howl to stun everyone around and can take quite a beating before dying.
Alistair is a nice tank but you have to not use any taunting. Send him on the mob you want tanked and leave Alistair alone with it.
Leliana with bows always near MC with her buff to regen. Served also as trap dectector and lockpicking.

Most useless Zevran ( what the hell, an Assassin that doesn't do lockpicking [ how did he managed to get to his targets ?! ] ). Never really used Sten or Shale. I think I killed Whynne or whatever she is called when I cleanse Tower of Magi so she ought to be THE most useless for me. I saw her name in some threads but I never got her. I also killed Loghain at Landsmeet but I loved to hate him, and just how good it felt when he died !Image IPB

Depends on your main. In regards to interaction: Ser whatshisname in the Human Noble origin that helps you get your dog and then leaves. He does so little for you, even when you include his fight in the main hall during the attack.

As far as gameplay is concerned, it's Sten and Oghren for me. There's simply no real use for a DPS warrior and they suck at tanking compared to Alistair or Shale. Dog is not particularly useful either. As characters, aside from Dog who doesn't do much of anything, I don't mind having any of them around. It depends more on the combinations than on individual members of the party.

Sten is "most useless" compared to the rest of the party, purely for mechanical reasons - he's denied a spec point! Hax!

Leliana is totally useless to me, i take Zev over her every time, i find her creepy and annoying.

she is really the only one i'll happily leave at camp. i'm on my fourth playthrough now, she's sat at camp for each one once i got her in the party, i only get her so i have an extra at the final battle. the only time i engaged her was for the romance accomplishment, where she further proved her creepyness.

Poor Morrigan, she gets so much hate for the way she was written. But she is really good at crowd controlling with Seals, Nightmare, COLD, Mind Blast, add to that healing and she will be more useful than Wynne, who comes in too late with all her Skill Points tied in Tactics, and wonky attribute points.

Zev and any good PC rogue player knows that it all done from behind. I never bothered to place a single point in CON on any rogue, and yet they lead the party in DPS. Yes, they do most of their damage from behind ;)

This game is stupidly easy with a good rogue and mage in your team, the tank is just for aggro retention (and Shale is a good tank)

it's a a tie between Wynne and Ogren, Wynne is so preachy and hogs screentime with her falling down all over the place, and ogren just drinks and says soddon this and that and asschaps and falls down lol. I hate them both.

the dog is third I don't use him very much.

For me, Oghren's the most useless. Dog is good at low levels, especially if you pump his Constitution up there so he doesn't die. Wynne is excellent as a healer, if you make sure to level her up with high Magic and Constitution, so *she* doesn't die. I can't stand Zevran, and he's useless to me anyway because Leliana has been leveled up to my liking for so long that she's a way better rogue by the time I get Zevran in the party. Oghren was *sort of* handy when I was in the Deep Roads, but he was still the first one to die in battle. Yeah, I had Dog seriously outlive him on a number of occasions. Go Dog!

Sten has to be the most useless. One specialization only? Everyone else has two (except Shale, but her extremely high constitution for her really high health makes up for it). The only person I find more useless than Sten is the Dog, and even then at least the Dog can find me free stuff to sell. What does Sten do? He basically tells me that everything I know is wrong, black is white, up is down, and short is long.
I also rarely use Morrigan once I get Wynne. When I get my main a healer, I tend to go for Morrigan instead, but otherwise I use Morrigan practically never.
