APPLAUSE PLEASE!
WYNNE!
Why? Because with only 2 skillpoints and second spec spirithealer or respec-mod, Morrigan can heal as good as Wynne, most spells that Wynne has are useless, and besides of the dialogues with Oghren she isnt very funny to have around.

A tank PC found Alistair the most useless. If a second tank was needed Shale worked out better. Or even Sten and Oghren.
And a mage PC usually left Morrigan at camp.

Hate to say it, but dog is probably the most useless. The inability to specialize really did it. At least with Oghren you can specialize so he can war cry or specialize into Reaver. Dog can't do that. He's a great mage killer, and dread howl has its uses. But other than that his dps isn't anything special.
Oghren is second. He comes too late. Even if you do Deep Roads first (I actually did do this on my second game) you still get him late. You have to do many Ozrimar quests first. And when he does join you, you can't really talk to him until you finish the Anvil. And seeing as he comes late, well his talents are too screwed up to tank. You are stuck with him using a 2 hander. 2 handed weapons in this game, just don't impress me. My duel weilding rogue using daggers does more damage. 2 handed weapons should do MUCH more damage than a dagger.
Sten- the lack of specialization hurts him. The good thing is you get him early. He can tank, but it takes ages for him to be decent. He won't finish out the sword/shield tree until end game. If only we could respec... His dialogue is good, despite what others have said. But you may have to gift him to get anywhere in dialogue to start.
Zevran: he comes too late as well. Although if you do redcliff first (redcliff seems the shortest), you can get him fairly early. But he's a tough battle that early. He doesn't start out with many duel weild talents, many are in the rogue tree. And you'll have to micromanage him to get him into proper backstabbing position. I prefer to control my during my fights, not npc's. Lelianna as an archer requires little positioning micromanagement.
Morrigan: useless shapeshifter spells and specialization. Have to give her spirit healer unless you bring another mage. But she will shine if you do have 2 mages, as you can concentrate on her dps. But if not, you'll spend much of the early game getting her some much needed healing spells. It seems to take forever for you to get her up one level so you can get a basic heal spell.

My character (regardless of build) does more damage than any 3 of them combined. Lame.

Leilana and Morrigan. In Morrigan's case I was tired of all her sarcastic remarks. I wish there was an option for my mc to walk up to her and just pimp slap some respect into her. In Leilana's case she is too much a goodie, goodie. I was strolling in the market area in one of the city's just picking peoples pockets (I am a rogue) and she had the nerve to tell me I was going to have to stop that. Also, I don't use the dog that much either.
That is strange. I played this game 2 times as a rogue and I pick pocket everyone including people in the Chantry and she never said that to me.

I can't bring myself to make a party without Morrigan and Zevran. Love them both.

Morrigan is my only must have, she was my only healer and mage after I killed Wynn.

He's got great burst damage (auto attack, immediatly chain sunder armor to cut off auto attack animation and get 2 more hits, auto attack, chain sunder arms, critical, mighty blow can net you 500+ damage in no time), I like his background, and most importantly you get him EARLY. You have to complete half of the Orzammar questline to pick up Oghren, whereas you get Sten for free at Lothering. His conversations with Morrigan and Leliana were also quite amusing.
Personally I think Zevran is the worst and don't think it's even remotely close. With Sten, at least you can't complain about his talent choices. They're everything a 2hander would want, with Zevran though? Guy is useless, low cunning, no utility, crap damage until boosted later.

So true, what kind of moronic DW rogue doesn't pump all talents into momentium asap. Not to mention no pick locks, wtf dude. Due to his poor setup I have to use lelianna everytime even though I think her personality is bland and boring. Unless I make a rogue myself then I just kick both of em to the curb.

For wandering about listening to companion chatter, sadly I hate to say it, but Dog. He has the least and none are super stellar.

-Dog just doesn't come anymore
-Sten is a regular in my party. Keep his dexterity up to make sure he lands his hits- because when they do they take massive chunks of enemy health.
-Wynne is always at my side. yes, heath on tap, indeed.
-Alistair is a regular because I have him as my mage killer- he's stacked with spell resistance and lightning damage.
-Leliana is quite the archer. as long as you protect her with your tanks she does great amounts of damage. Unfortunately, her game time is lmited to when I feel just like mixing it up.
Morrigan is great, but she's just a bit... frail. I had trouble early on keeping her off the ground.
-I just Found Oghren and Shale, so I'm just using them right now, trying them out.
I think the whole point of the abundant characters is that yes, some will be not used. That's because it depends on what your main characters is- if you're already a tank, you'll don't need other tanks as much.

Leliana for is definitely not useless as i pump the dex and cunning for her with all the bow talents and give her the ranger spec and she never falls in battle and more often than not kills alot of hard enemies for me at ranges using arrow of slaying and doing like 350+ dmg and if being attacked in melee she gets protected by her bear or spider, i actually find her one of the most useful characters

I have found that it has a lot to do with your own character build. The next time I play (today...finished it last night) I am going to build a rogue/dual handed/warrior. So I wont need to take Leliana or Zevran at all. And to have two mages and a tank loaded with constitution I reckon will be the go for me this time.
Note - dex based warrior.
