K, just finished first playthrough and ended with several questions. I don't get:

1. Why are there no half elves? Given that the humans...well, you'd think they'd be there somewhere, right?

2. Are Ferelden arrows tipped with homing devices? Have you seen the way those things come after you when you're strafing?

3. Why is the nurse at Ostagar wearing a pink party dress? Is this what nurses wear on the front lines?

4. Why did I pay 89 gold for a new suit of armor (Felon's Coat) only for it to look EXACTLY like the crappy armor I'd started with? (Memories of Everquest come to mind).

5. Why does all my armor include a dog collar and gold-plated nipples?

6. What is going on in the Elven Orphanage such that the elves turn into humans when they die? (Look at the spirits! They have rounded ears!)

7. How come Alistair has such lousy grammar for growing up with an Arl and then in the chantry? ("The babe didn't die, I am him." Not him! HE - I am HE! Subject, not object...Gah.)

8. Why does Oghren's helmet keep popping on and off when I talk to him? Is this part of his being drunk? (kidding)

9. How is it that the moment a new person joins our party they suddenly are privy to all the delicate inter-personal relationships of all the members who have been there since the beginning?

10. What the HE** is Sandal doing Fort Drakon at end game? I truly found him to be more frightening sitting there with those big, wide eyes than the freakin' broodmother.

1. Human and Elf makes human.
2. It's a game.
3. It's a game.
4. New art takes time. It was probably deemed not worth while for a single item most people will never see.
5. What?
6. It's a game.
7. Real people don't talk perfectly or care when people don't. Only whiny English majors do.
8. What?
9. It's a game.
10. You can say hell, it's okay. And I imagine he was there to give you a chance to stock up on items.

Leliana's another big gossip. I think she and Alistair are the worst ones, haha.

Hahaha, I wondered the same thing - did the studs on the armour have to go RIGHT THERE?

1. Don't know the answer to this.

2. It's a game. Game design trumps reality or lore or setting every time. If you missed half as often as you were supposed to you'd be one extremely frustrated archer.

3. Whaaaa?

4. This is one of the low points in Dragon Age. Really really crappy art work for such a high quality game. It's something Bioware can take from MMO's. Sure not every armor set in modern MMO's look great, but take WoW for instance (Since hey it's the biggest MMO ever) it has THOUSANDS of unique item models....

You could've made more then a handful of armor models. It's really quite sad and pathetic. (Hell even Mass Effect had *seemingly* more armor models then DA:O)

5. Game designers like to sex up female armor in every video game setting... Whether its volleyball, Tekken, Dragon Age, World of Warcraft etc etc... Game devs enjoy sexing up their female avatars.

6. This isn't unique to the Orphanage. Look at the ruins in the Brecilian Forsest. Same problem. Apparently all knife ears get plastic surgery when they die?

7. It makes the game feel much more human. How many Americans, or Brits, or any other English speaking group use proper grammar. language, and punctiation  100% of the time?

8.Bug.

9. It's game design. Design trumps lore or "reality".

10.You and every other player have been asking that question... Shhhhh. He's a ninja .

Honestly, it's something they'll reveal in DA 2 or never. Probably has much more power and intelligence then people give him credit for.

Elves are 'genetically adaptive', so a cross between an elf and a human or dwarf will end with a human or dwarf. There are half human/darves, but as they're rare, they don't feature in the game unless Sandel is one.

it takes ~5 minutes to extract and uniquely retexture this particular armor.  so wrong on point one.

with it being the ultimate armor for a combat rogue, it's likely that most people actually will see it and get it for any playthrough that has said combat rogue, whether as the MC or for zev or leli.  looking at all the threads regarding the utility of rogues and their status as DPS kings, it seems fairly certain most people will see it.  failed on point two.

It's also SIX YEARS OLD.  Less than a month after it's initial release, the game didn't have thousands of unique armor models.  It didn't even have hundreds of them.  I still recall the dreaded word of "placeholder" being waved around, right and left.  Blizzard used standard models for many pieces of unique equipment in order to get the game out faster.  After a full year they STILL didn't have all the unique models available to the players.  Because, as the second poster in the thread said, there were far more important issues to deal with.  Don't misunderstand me, I think the sparcity of armor models in DA is a bit annoying too.  But to compare DA to a game that's had six years of fine tuning is silly.
You could've made more then a handful of armor models. It's really quite sad and pathetic. (Hell even Mass Effect had *seemingly* more armor models then DA:O)
No it didn't.  Seriously.  It had a handful of base models, and then maybe a dozen different textures that went over the top of those models.  And DA does exactly the same thing; that's why the armors are diffrent colors, but are the same shape and style.
You're talking about a re-texture, which is admitedly relaitvely quick.  The OP and Sankis are (I think) talking about a completely new model for the Felon's COat, which takes far longer than 5 minutes.

Aesthetically this game has need of some innovative minds. I think there's about 6 different armortypes with minor variations. It's so mindnumbingly boring.

Lemme anser in detail...

1. Why are there no half elves? Given that the humans...well, you'd think they'd be there somewhere, right?
- Yea, this is a plothole right there. Coming from the creators of BG and such its definitely "odd".

2. Are Ferelden arrows tipped with homing devices? Have you seen the way those things come after you when you're strafing?
- Don't forget that even if you move a character ten miles away from the enemy they can still hit you if you were in range when they started attacking.

3. Why is the nurse at Ostagar wearing a pink party dress? Is this what nurses wear on the front lines?
- I guess it's a style. Mages wear retarded clothing as well.

4. Why did I pay 89 gold for a new suit of armor (Felon's Coat) only for it to look EXACTLY like the crappy armor I'd started with? (Memories of Everquest come to mind).
- Damn, I was planning to get this next. I was hoping it looked awesome for that price.... Still they screw you over with all the specials. Even the Starfang two-handed sword has the same looks as the original Great Sword. Sigh.

5. Why does all my armor include a dog collar and gold-plated nipples?
- Truly.

6. What is going on in the Elven Orphanage such that the elves turn into humans when they die? (Look at the spirits! They have rounded ears!)
- I think you meant sprites, yeah there's many bogus things going on. But then this might have something to do with the fact that there's no half elves.

7. How come Alistair has such lousy grammar for growing up with an Arl and then in the chantry? ("The babe didn't die, I am him." Not him! HE - I am HE! Subject, not object...Gah.)
- Alistair is pretty stupid, especially compared to Morrigan. Now that I think of it, Morrigan speaks way to proper for someone growing up in "the wilds".

8. Why does Oghren's helmet keep popping on and off when I talk to him? Is this part of his being drunk? (kidding)
- I had the same thing happen to me. It's a glitch. His beard and such also disappears into his armor. It's almost like the Dwarves were added later and they just shrunk the human models. Seriously that's EXACTLY what they did.

9. How is it that the moment a new person joins our party they suddenly are privy to all the delicate inter-personal relationships of all the members who have been there since the beginning?
- I think they start by reading your journal. Wait, your journal is a big todo list with a retarded codex system that no one reads.

10. What the HE** is Sandal doing Fort Drakon at end game? I truly found him to be more frightening sitting there with those big, wide eyes than the freakin' broodmother.
- Seriously, let Sandal join as the next companion. Makes you wondering why he was cowering in Lothering.

You forgot one big problem, probably the biggest in this game:

11. Why the HELL do they use the EXACT same animation for men and women. The women walk and move retarded!!!!!! They did the same in Mass Effect. Cheap bastards!

well, considering the number of posts by people who ask where they get this armor, only to realize they created the second drake scale armor dozens of hours ago, it's likely that many people won't ever see it in game.  it will take everyone their second or third playthrough before they figure out exactly when and how they can obtain this armor.

personally, i'm more annoyed that there only seem to be about three mage robes in the entire game.  and couldn't morrigan's upgraded robe have been at least slightly varied from her first one?  i'd loved to have seen her in a new, but still revealing, look.

12. How are the caves lighted? How are the deep roads lighted? There are no fires aside from the odd torch you come across, yet it's as bright as a frikking bonfire. This is really stupid. The deep roads should be covered in darkness with you holding a lamp to light your way.

I had another really good question. Why is there no toilets in ferelden?? My char could acturally use one when he drinks all the potion.

In the mage tower, they had what looked like chamber pots or potty training seats. No flushing toilets, though, sorry. You gotta use the chamber pot or go "au naturel"

The actual roads have magma flowing beside them and there's a codex entry explaining that was intended to be the light source.

Yeah that only explains why the main roads would be lighted, not everything else.

I don't get how a mammal can turn into a giant insect. There's a fundamental change to the entire biology. It doesn't make any sense? :)

(It makes about as much sense as a couple of the gripes I've read up there.)

With regard to the lighting in Deep Roads and the tunnels, perhaps the rock itself has some sort of "glowy" property to it. Sounds good enough to me. Whatever the reason, I'm willing to accept "because" as an answer, because I really like the fact that I can see where I'm going. Logic can take a backseat to functionality, in this case, and you won't hear a peep out of me :).

1. Good question. There doesn't seem to be a problem with reproduction between the races. Maybe they have some lame thing where the same-sex parent determines race.

2. Yes

3. Why not?

4. For the stats, duh.

5. I'll have to look for that next time.

6. They've lived so long among the humans their spirits have forgotten their true form.

7. Neither of those upbringings mean he should also be a good grammarian.

8. He uses it as a bucket.

9. Heroes like nothing more than to gather around the fire and fill each other in on the juicy gossip.

K, just finished first playthrough and ended with several questions. I don't get:

1. Why are there no half elves? Given that the humans...well, you'd think they'd be there somewhere, right?
as said human + elf = Human in Fereldan.  This came from Gaider himself.

2. Are Ferelden arrows tipped with homing devices? Have you seen the way those things come after you when you're strafing?
it's an RPG...not an action game/fps.  Archers would be next to useless if you could just quickly swap characters and move them slightly to avoid all arrows.  It's an RPG

3. Why is the nurse at Ostagar wearing a pink party dress? Is this what nurses wear on the front lines?
who knows.  whos cares.  it's a fantasy world.  it's stupid to think all real-world things would or should be the same in different settings.  There's also no elves, dwarves, darkspawn, dragons, etc etc etc in the real world..so I guess they shouldn't be in Fereldin either?

4. Why did I pay 89 gold for a new suit of armor (Felon's Coat) only for it to look EXACTLY like the crappy armor I'd started with? (Memories of Everquest come to mind).
I agree with this...but as said it's most likely due to limited time/resources in skinning all items.  Though "unique" ones should be truly unique I agree.

5. Why does all my armor include a dog collar and gold-plated nipples?
It's a model issue.  Heads don't fit quite right onto bodies and show an obvious seem so those collars/necklaces are there to hide that seem.

6. What is going on in the Elven Orphanage such that the elves turn into humans when they die? (Look at the spirits! They have rounded ears!)
never paid much attention to this..but could be that they're just workers in the orphanage or as with #4 probably generic ghost models and it wasn't worth the time/investment to make elven ghosts just for one or two little spots.

7. How come Alistair has such lousy grammar for growing up with an Arl and then in the chantry? ("The babe didn't die, I am him." Not him! HE - I am HE! Subject, not object...Gah.)
this is stupid.  I won't even entertain this idiotic nit-pick past this point.

8. Why does Oghren's helmet keep popping on and off when I talk to him? Is this part of his being drunk? (kidding)
it's a bug obviously.

9. How is it that the moment a new person joins our party they suddenly are privy to all the delicate inter-personal relationships of all the members who have been there since the beginning?
it's a game.  do you really wanna waste time having to "retell" everything to them?  it would be too limiting...and even if you did..what would that entail? one dialogue option and a black screen? again, stupid nit-pick

10. What the HE** is Sandal doing Fort Drakon at end game? I truly found him to be more frightening sitting there with those big, wide eyes than the freakin' broodmother.
obviously he was put there to give you one final chance to enchant/whatever before you faced the BBEG....again who cares.
