And what if you didn't survive? Do they still end up on Earth? I don't want to spend even a moment thinking about the combinations.CronoDragoon wrote...
I am still not understanding you. Are you saying that either everyone has to stay on Earth or everyone has to be stranded on the planet? If so, that doesn't make sense to me. If it becomes clear that Bioware is not going to delete the Normandy scene for whatever reason (as you suggested, they want to keep the Adam and Eve thing perhaps), they can still compromise with fans by showing that your LI refused to board the Normandy and flee with the rest, or whatever.
If you're going to have random squad members left on Earth, you mostly obviate any message you were trying to convey with the crash scene (if anything, it's even more pointless, since everybody will just keep the ones they care most about, and Joker can die alone for all anybody cares anymore). If there really was an actual reason to quarantine the squad, they're not going to undo that by letting you pick off a couple members while the rest stay (either the reason is insufficient to prevent rescuing the squad, or the whole squad stays where they are).
Now, sure, they could do something like just make sure the people who you had at the beam never pop out of the Normandy and then let you imagine whatever you want, but I'm assuming these epilogue sequences are actually going to have some substance to them, and I will not be satisfied if the possibility of a reunion requires just as much belief in fairy tales as the current ending.
The problem is not rescuing the crew. They can do that if they want (it's just a hand-wave away, like all the other nonsense in the ending). If this is what you were speaking to (that they couldn't come up with a way to rescue the Normandy), I don't think yours is really a solution they'd consider, due to the incredible amount of variation. They'll just have Tali (or Adams, if she took the plunge) fix the engines and fly everybody home if they decide the squad isn't trapped.
