According to pre-release interviews, having Varric being the narrator was drawing inspiration from Kevin Spacey's character from The Usual Suspects.

...so what if, after Cassandra and Lelianna leave, you see Varric walk out of the building into a nearby alley, where Isabella and Merrill are waiting... and they say 'You were in there a long time. Did they get any information out of you... Hawke?'

Duh-duh-DUUUUUUUUH!!!!

They made Hawke a non-human character after all! What a twist!

That would only work if Casssandra turned around and saw that her wall was plastered in posters saying things like 'Bone Mining Equipment' or 'Isabela's House of Good Repute' or 'God dammit, Anders'.

Already seen that one thrown around a lot before the game's release.

It's rather obvious now that that movie's name was only invoked because it's one of the most well known modern examples of a framed narrative (with an unrealiable narrator), not because the actual framed narrative we got in any way resembled anything from the movie. 'Twas mostly just there as a plot device for the timeskips, and I assume for an attempt to 'link' three mostly seperate stories together.

Now, if you want to try a roleplaying game that actually pulls off the whole framed narrative thing rather well, and even has the potential to make the player feel like a regular Keyser Söze, try Alpha Protocol.
