My questions this time around are:

"Do you feel there is a good range of weaponry to choose from?"

"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?"
(e.g. - From low: "Give this weapon to the rookie so he doesn't hurt him/herself or anyone else for that matter" to High: "This weapon makes things go away just by its mere presence on the battlefield", and everything in between)

"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?" I am not asking which you think is the "best", only which one do you simply like to play with most of all.

Cheers!

"Do you feel there is a good range of weaponry to choose from?"
Yes

"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?"
Yes

"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?"
It really depends on what class I'm playing.

As far as AR goes, I'd divide them into two categories. For full auto I like the Harrier best, followed by the Revenant, although it lacks a bit of punch. For semi auto, it's a tie between the Mattock and the Saber. The former is great for its weight, the latter packs a lot of punch. The other full auto rifles don't pack enough punch, even with extended barrel, rail amps and ammo. It's actually the ammo that deals more damage than the weapon itself.

As for shotguns, the Claymore is pretty rewarding when you master reload cancel. The Scimitar is a lot of fun on cool-down dependent class like the batarian soldier or on vanguards. It feels like a jackhammer, and it becomes really efficient with shotgun amps and ammo mods. I'm not too fond of the other shotguns, despite trying them several times.

Pistols, with the exception of the Eagle, are all quite good and should be on anyone's loadout. My favorite would be the carnifex or Phalanx. As far as the Eagle goes, it should be on par with other promotional weapons. The Valiant, Crusader and Hurricane are amongst the best weapons in their respective categories. It shouldn't be any different for the Eagle.

SMG are light, but that's pretty much it. I do use the Hurricane from time to time and it feels good, but there's something missing with the others. They were more interesting in Mass Effect 2. They feel like pea shooters when the Locust and Tempest in ME2 were beasts.

Sniper rifles are good at what they do except for the Incisor. It's somewhat decent with a stability mod, but it could use more love. My favorite is the Black Widow, though the sound the Javelin makes is quite awesome.

Good range?

I mean the weapons are there, but... There's a few gaps. I miss heavy weapons as well, but I'm not sure there's a place for them here anymore.

I think semi auto and burst categories could use some love too. Our current burst sniper is not all that great, the vindicator looks good on paper, but I can't get it to work really, the shuriken is supposed to be garbage and the hornet misses too often for my tastes last time I tried it.

The viper's refire rate holds it back the same holds true for the saber from what I've observed. The mattock and raptor are in the opposite direction it let you fire as fast as you want, a good battle rifle in the middle would be nice to have. Something with say a phalanx's refire rate. The valiant comes close, but a true battle rifle would have a more than decent clip size to boot.

Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?

The common - uncommon - rare - ultra tries to distinguish this but kinda fail. Commons are where they should be rookie level weapons.

Uncommons are sometimes mediocre which they should be, but usable. A few of them are unusable due to their traits and are relegated to garbage status. Locust, tempest, incisor. I've never seen anyone use a scimitar either... EVER. I feel the mattock is the only one in the bunch that sticks out, the potential it has far outshines its bretherin.

Rares are an absolute mess. GPR is really no good to probly half of players. Consistent headshots are required to make it anywhere near useful. GPSMG is absolute garbage and has trouble killing anything with armor, and also requires you to stay out of cover too long to be useful. The disciple's only advantage is weight, it doesn't belong in the rare category on stat merits. The revenant is an utter joke on paper a LMG that does less damage than a semi auto? and nearly the same as a burst weapon? And far less than an SMG? What failure of a company produces this thing? And it doesn't have an advantage like penetration either. The kishock before fixes was actually a good niche weapon, if you used it right it served an extremely limited but highly useful purpose, and it wasn't easy to use in that capacity. After fixes it is not really useful for anything, you might as well use something you don't have to charge up every time. Not sure what to think about the hornet, the arc pistol could use a bit more damage per shot, but its almost right.

Ultras and promotionals. The eagle bites, those who look at the numbers don't want it and those that don't are misguided into thinking it is a good weapon because they can score points with it, the description says its an auto phalanx, it is not. The harrier says it is an auto mattock with slightly less punch, actually the numbers say it is more powerful, but I love the thing don't touch it, but you see what I'm getting at here? An auto version of something oughta be some kind of better than the original. Eagle is not. Not sure what the indra is even supposed to be, its a weird freak of nature, it doesn't work very well, but I have no clue what to do with it or what it was supposed to be to fix it. I don't know why I would choose my wraith either, better options everywhere.

The harrier, hurricane and krysae erase enemies from the battlefield. Once you have a hurricane it is standard equipment from what I hear. The harrier is more of a niche for high weight characters, its a really good balance of a weapon, seriously it is compelling spot on job BW. krysae has a lot of drama but I think everyone agrees it annihilates things with exceeding ease.

Harrier is my favorite. It has flaws I have to deal with, but a rewarding payoff as well. I find myself plotting ways to use it on more characters.

**"Do you feel there is a good range of weaponry to choose from?"
Yes, but I feel like most of those choices are limited to sniper rifles, shotguns, and pistols on gold. I do wish a number of the other weapons were a viable option as well.

**"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?"
Yes, the carnifex and GPS are both pretty strong in my opinion. If I can't decide which weapon to put on a character, I usually just throw on a carnifex as it is relatively light and strong, and if you can land head shots consistently, very dangerous. The GPS hits hard, auto-tracks, and is effective at fairly long ranges...what's not to like?

**"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?"
I do like me some shotguns...so probably the eviscerator, wraith, or claymore.

-Yes, I'd say each gun feels pretty unique actually.
-I wouldn't say there's a 'level' for the guns but some of them do take a bit more skill / knowledge of the game to use correctly. As far as niche goes, yes.
- I like guns that shoot one at a time because when I can 1 shot something I feel badass. The Carnifex and the Claymore are probably my favorites, though I know Carnifex doesn't really 1 shot most enemies it still feels great. I like using shotguns (katana, claymore, disciple style, not graahl or reegar [ though reegar is beastmode]) the most.

I feel like there is a wide range to choose from, though I find myself returning to the same guns (PhaestonImage IPB) time and again.

In fact the range is so wide that it could almost be said that there is a weapon for every niche in every weapons category.  All of them have heavy hitters and all of them have crowd control and any gun you could want in the middle.

That said, I feel like there is an exponential curve representing the effectiveness of our weaponry.  You have many decent but not great guns making up the majority of the group.  Next there are some great guns.  Then finally there are a few god powered weapons.  I don't see this as a problem because all of these guns are on our side, but I do feel that this is an accurate assessment.

Picking a favorite is nigh on impossible.  There are guns that fit perfectly with each of the classes that I play...  But since we are picking favorites here, I would have to say...  I can't do it, I am breaking them into groups.

Pistols: Phalanx
Assualt Rifles: Phaeston
Sniper Rifles: Meh, I don't snipe
Sub-Machine Guns: Locust
Shotguns:(hardest choice) Scimitar

And there you have it, a bunch of uncommon weapons and not one rare.  Oh well those are my favorites.

By the way... so you use these as mainly a "Combine the nerf threads into one" thread?

Or do you use them for outside of Bioware knowledge? ("I just want to know what you guys think")

You know what I've always loved, even in the SP? The noise the Graal makes when you fire it. I think it's the most satisfying video game weapon I've ever used. It's not perfect for every situation and class but damned if I don't try to find a way.

Extra love for the carnifex and the phaeston too.

My favourite weapon is probably the N7 Crusader. When I first used it in single player I hated it because it was so heavy, and it because it wasn't a typical up-close-and-personal shotgun (played a Vanguard in single player). I gave it another shot in multiplayer, and I actually found it to be a pretty versatile gun for anyone that isn't super dependent on cooldowns. It's super accurate at range, punches through Guardian shields without a mod, has a decent clip, super fast reload, good rate of fire, solid damage, and can rock a melee attachment (I'm a melee fighter at heart). And it just got a weight reduction :).

I'm also a big fan of the Saber, if for no other reason that its sound.

No. Despite presence of 9+ weapons per class, the presence of two to three weapons that stand head and shoulders above the others of its class render most of them comparatively ineffective.
E.g.
Sniper Rifles
Choice of: Valiant/Black Widow, Krysae or Widow/Javelin.

Assault Rifles
Choice of: Saber, Harrier or Falcon.

Pistols
Choice of: Carnifex/Paladin or Talon.

Shotguns
Choice of: Disciple, Claymore, GPS/GST or Reegar Carbine

Submachine guns
Choice of: Hurricane or Locust, GPSMG if ULM is necessary.

Yes. The question of whether they are effective at that niche or level is another matter entirely.

I often find that the playstyle of the AR's are vary brutish, inaccurate and lacking in damage.

The Indra is a perfect example of how I would like the AR to feel, fast fire rate but actually able to hit something beyond the kill range of a claymore.

Fast fire wepons are already at a loss vs the armoured opponents taking -50 damage per bullet and we seem to lack any upper class AR wepons aside from the Harrier.

Upper class ARs should be able to get 1.5 trooper class enemies dead per clip between the the upper 50% range of a claymore killshot to an additional 50% after that obviously slightly decreasing as the range to target grows.

"Do you feel there is a good range of weaponry to choose from?"
- Yes.

"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?"
- I feel that the rarity tiers do a good job of "training" players who are new to ME3's combat mechanics, with common weapons providing a "safety net" before moving onto weapons which carry a greater degree of punishment for undisciplined use. I do feel that the Multiplayer arsenal is missing a "training" weapon for the style of combat that the Mattock, Harrier, and to a lesser degree, the Saber call for, a role which is filled in SP by the N7 Valkyrie.

"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?"
- The Cerberus Harrier.

"Do you feel there is a good range of weaponry to choose from?"
In the sense that there are many different weapons in each category, yes.  In the sense that there is a variety of weaopns for playstyle preference?  Not so much.  Most of the classes have an emphasis on frequent power use, so the weight mechanic is the factor I consider most in outfiting every class with the exception of Infiltrator.

When I'm selecting weapons, I inevitably balance everything against how close to 200% I can get my cooldown.  And because cooldown matters to 5 of the 6 classes, I don't even consider a majority of the more ecletic weapons such as the Krysae, the Claymore or the Striker.

And honestly, it eventually comes down to using a Carnifex.  Low weight (ie, frequent power use), high damage, amazing accuracy.  I love the Carnifex just as it is, but I wish there was a comparable AR or SMG.

On a side note, I feel the AR class needs a complete overhaul in how they perform in relation to other weapons.

"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?"
Looking at weapons in terms of progression, yes.  The Avenger is an amazing starting weapon that is all the rage among players in the low N7 range (1- 90).  But once weapons are maxed out, they all start to blur together and I start looking for that heavy-hitting, low-weight weapon again.  And hello there, Mr. Carnifex.  Didn't you take me out last night as well?  I occasionally get bored of it and try out different weapons like the Vindicator or the Locust, but I end up back with the Carnifex after about three matches of poor weapon performance.

"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?"
My most used weapon is the Carnifex.  I have been pleased with the Mattock often enough to really wish I could use it more.  And the concept of the Incisor is really fun, but its execution is a bit of handful.

But I digress, my favorite weapon (disregarding actual performance) is the Phaeston.  Its like a really nifty pocket machinegun.  :D

Yes.

"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?"

For the most part yes, but I somewhat miss the Valkyrie (or any two round burst weapon for that matter). Better variety of SMGs would be welcome (something bigger, more AR-like, maybe?).

"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?"

I enjoy using many weapons as I like the variety - most of my characters use different weapons, but I think Talon, Vindicator and Valiant are my favourite weapons at the very moment (only got the last one recently, may be just the "new toy").

I would like to see some heavier weapons. My human soldier with Rev X can have a 170 cooldown I would like to see some weapons buffed but made much heavier to compensate. How much better could my Rev x be if its cooldown were -100.

its hard to choose one main weapon tbh, but for my top 5, in order of <3 <3

1. Claymore this thing is just amazing, its my favorite weapon
2. Widow (while i like the 3 rounds in the black widow, i prefer the extra damage of the widow, and with reload cancelling you can still fire it fast enough to clear the battlefield, though not as fast as the 3 shots of the black widow admittedly, but perhaps when my black widow is higher than rank 1, i might use it more :P)
3. Paladin
4. Reegar (very close range, but still melts everything. i <3 this gun even though its a major ammo hog)
5. Harrier

Some what yes.

Have played with all except the saber, RNG... no bueno. I would have to say Harrier, or scorpion.

To answer the first question, there is definitely a wide array of weapons to choose from. With the limited weapons you had to choose from in ME2, im glad there is a much bigger variety of weapons in ME3.
As far as weapon niches, no question that this game has a weapon that fills almost anything you could want.
My favorite weapons currently are the Talon and Saber, since I just unlocked them. After that, its probably the reegar, since I love playing close range classes.

Half-decent. There isn't any appreciable variety in SMGs in my estimation. Also, I don't think that ARs should be as weak as they are. Most of the automatics feel like SMGs in terms of damage, while the semi-autos make me question why I'm not using a Viper or Carnifex...

Derek Hollan wrote...

More or less. I think that people make their own niche in a squad, and that is partly based on which weapons they prefer. That being said, I don't think the weapons themselves have niches to fill separate from their class. For example, shotguns are generally shorter range, higher damage, and higher weight than other guns. There are variances between shotguns (Claymore vs Disciple, for example), but they still serve the usual in-your-face style that a shotgun is well-suited for.

Derek Hollan wrote...

My favorite gun is the Viper. It's absolutely wonderful for a squad support, crowd-control style sniper. Depending on the class I'm using, I'll alternatively go with the Carnifex, Eviscerator, Disciple, or Saber.

There are plenty of weapons, but a lot of them are the same in stats.

There is a weapon for every niche and level.

My favorite guns:
-Katana on vanguard, sadly i can only use that one, since its the only one with low weight for power cooldowns.
-Widow <3
-Carnifex
-Phaeston, again, together with the avenger, its the only one with low weight for power cooldowns. But the avenger has less damage.

There's too many guns really. Most of them never see the light of day because they are a joke or the same job is done better by something else. Engineers and biotic types take a carnifex or sometimes a Talon, snipers go with a Valiant, and the Soldier has a Saber. That's pretty much it.

You need to change certain weapons that fill odd niches (Saber, Crusader, Talon, Disciple are the ones I can think of in particular) so that they can actually be used to fill those niches and be interesting choices worth taking and be new strategies worth investigating.

Because right now, most are not worth it. (For example, Crusader is a really intriguing gun, but given the shield gating system and your slug bullet, extreme weight(which was reduced last update thank you very much) and less than Claymore damage, it isn't worth taking to the field over other options.)

"Do you feel there is a good range of weaponry to choose from?" For the most.

"Do you feel there is a weapon that fills every niche and level?" Not really. If you focus on powers and the fasted power recharge time, then your options are limited.

"With the above questions in mind, which is your favourite weapon overall?" Powers (Warp, Overload, Vorcha Flamers, Reave, etc.). Second would be the Carnifax. Never unlocked the Paladin, Scorpion, or Eagle. With my Geth Engineer, I love the Geth Plasma Submachine Gun.
