Both of the Dragon Age games gave us an animal companion, though in DAO he was a full party member and in DA2 he was a summonable Ranger-style pet. Both systems had their advantages and disadvantages, but this is not the thread to discuss them.

If the third game follows this trend, that begs the question: what will be the animal companion in Dragon Age: Inquisition? If DAI is indeed set in Orlais and the protagonist is an Orlesian, a mabari would somewhat be out of place. Plus, it starts to be old hat after a while; we're already seeing some recycling in the dog jokes.

But what other creature could possibly take a mabari's place? A giant spider? A trained bear? A dragonling? No doubt those would be good in combat, but they lack the mabari's intelligence. Imagine Varric trying to teach a giant spider how to play cards and you'll see what I mean.

So what's the answer? Why, a tame ghast, of course!

I know what you're thinking: why would anyone want one of those funny little creatures from Mark of the Assassin for a party member? Here's the reasons why:

1) They seem to be at least somewhat intelligent, so they offer the interactivity you had with a mabari. Granted, you can't really pet a ghast, but you could probably talk to it and have it respond.

2) They're decent in a fight! Keep in mind that the ghasts go toe to toe with Hawke even when s/he's the Champion of Kirkwall and nearing Level 30.

3) They can fill a variety of roles! There are ranged ghasts that spit darts, tough ghasts that serve as mini-tanks and even magic-wielding ghasts. And their magic has a cool voodoo vibe to it.

4) They wear hats, so they may be accessorizable! Perhaps you could earn approval or even change your ghast's abilities by giving them hats, just as kaddis had an effect on the mabari's abilities. Or they could just use standard equipment.

5) They can fit through doorways, unlike some of the more sizeable beasts in Dragon Age.

6) They're adorable! Who could not love this face?

If I wanted a pokemon, I would have played a pokemon game. Sorry if I sound blunt. Don`t mean it in a rude way.

I would only want one if it could be summoned from a jaunty backpack.

And one of the gift hats would have to resemble a jester's cap. With bells. Many, many bells.

That sounds like a reference, but it's not one I'm getting.

Maybe you could pick a hat with bells off of a dead harlequin. :P

Oh, it wasn't a reference to anything specific.

I just think it would do much to startle your foe if suddenly a bell-laden crude and gassy creature came flying out from your backpack, dropping into the heart of battle with a malicious grin and sinister giggle.

Enemy: "Where are the papers we seek, DA3 PC?"

DA3 PC: "Why, they're right here in this pack."

Enemy: "Oof, this thing is heavy." (Opens bag)

Ghast: "WAAAAUGH!" (begins face-chewing)

I think it would be funny if Orlais had a breed of magic intelligent cats that could act as makeshift rogues the way Fereldan has a breed of magic intelligent dogs that could act as makeshift warriors. (It would be a great way to bring back pets without using the dog over and over, and showcase the fundamental differences between the two countries: Fereldan is full of rugged dog people while Orlais is full of refined cat people.)

The same way Mabari could give and take hits and use "Dog" abilities to stun and overwhelm opponents, imagine having a cat that could stealth and disarm traps and use "Cat" abilities that could stun or disarm the opponent similarly to how Anders describes Ser Pounce-a-lot taking out a genlock.

Probably not the best idea, but I still think it would be funny as hell.

Correction: Ser Pounce-a-lot once swatted a genlock across the nose. In turn, the genlock nearly ripped him in half.

The funny thing is that genlocks don't have noses. Just two holes.

I have zero interest in what is essentially a lame rip off of the Murlocs in World of Warcraft!<_<

Keep the Mabari or add some other dogs. I do NOT want a GHAST.

A drakeling? Why the hell not! I think it would be good to have a pet baby dragon as a companion. They're pretty strong too.

Okay, a cat that can actually handle itself in a fight unlike the civilian cat that only THINKS it's an fighter.

But not that smart. The key here is to get a companion with whom you have some level of interaction, ie. cutscenes at the camp/the mansion/your airship, or possibly dialogues with your party members.

Imagine if we had a ghast in DAO. Then we could have had dialogues like this:

Morrigan: Stop looking at me, beast. I have nothing you want!
Ghast: (drools)
Morrigan: Why do you keep staring at me so, you flea-ridden ape? Can you not tell when you are not wanted?
Ghast: Woman … change … bear …
Morrigan: Yes, I can change into a bear. Would you like me to turn into one and tear you to pieces?
Ghast: Bear … tasty …
Morrigan: (shudders) And now I will never sleep again. Thank you for that.

Honestly, I thought that's where thats1evildude was going with his Morrigan banter. :D

It's actually just one of the dialogues that Morrigan has with Dog. I just changed some words around.

Regarding the disturbing topic of ghast sexuality, I think they're more likely to gnaw on your leg than hump it. I can't say the same about a darkspawn companion, though …

Sixth day, her screams, we hear in our dreams
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew
Eighth day, we hated as she is violated

Speaking of broodmothers, what kind of base creature could be used to create ghasts? And when are we going to meet a kossith broodmother? Those ogres have to come from somewhere.

Then how about.... a stinky cheesewheel sidekick for the Orlesian PC?

And a new PC-only talent/spell:  Animate Cheese.

The Ghast are enemies you encounter in the Mark of the Assassin DLC.
