The Ghast are enemies you encounter in the Mark of the Assassin DLC.

And they were a ripoff of the murlocs in World of Warcraft.

So you keep saying. You could also suggest they were rip-offs of the cannibals in Jade Empire, the hobbes in Fable, the minions in Overlord or the kobolds in Dungeons and Dragons.

WoW did not pioneer the idea of short, funny-looking monsters.

A drakeling? Why the hell not! I think it would be good to have a pet baby dragon as a companion. They're pretty strong too.

But not that smart. The key here is to get a companion with whom you have some level of interaction, ie. cutscenes at the camp/the mansion/your airship, or possibly dialogues with your party members.

Imagine if we had a ghast in DAO. Then we could have had dialogues like this:

Morrigan: Stop looking at me, beast. I have nothing you want!
Ghast: (drools)
Morrigan: Why do you keep staring at me so, you flea-ridden ape? Can you not tell when you are not wanted?
Ghast: Woman … change … bear …
Morrigan: Yes, I can change into a bear. Would you like me to turn into one and tear you to pieces?
Ghast: Bear … tasty …
Morrigan: (shudders) And now I will never sleep again. Thank you for that.

Dragons are smart. They just don't have a language. Not everything needs a language to be smart. Look at ants. Besides a dragonling can be funny too as it could steal stuff from other party members. It could also growl. You could have a little side plot where you discover the dragonling has made a nest with all the belongings of party members.

I actually suggested in another thread that he be voiced by the guy who does Jar Jar Binks.

Dragons don't growl. They hiss.

Don't get me wrong, a dragonling could be cute. But I'm also reminded of the "dragonling disaster" in DAO.

I thought the ghasts were quite cute. Annoying with hundreds of them trying to gnaw at your nose, but cute nontheless.
Still, if I could choose, I'd want a cat. A truly Orlesian cat that won't look at you until you have something it wants. And scratches your eyes out when you ****** it off.

...Actually, nevermind. All cats are like that.

Sounds like a Witch of the Wilds.  Would that make them aghast?

Both WoW and Dragon Age might be drawing inspiration from HP Lovecraft's Deep Ones here with the Murlocs and the Ghasts.  Deep ones are fishymen that swim and stride around with menace.  Also, WoW and Dragon Age both have Old Gods that are locked up underground like Lovecraft does.

Thank you. Now I will forever imagine Morrigan as a ghast.
Bye bye, God Baby, I can't touch your mother anymore.

If DA3's protagonist doesn't have a mabari, I will cry. A lot.

That being said, I always wanted one of those little deep stalkers. Minus the weird mouth, they're adorable.

I also would not complain about a bronto.

A bronto would be awesome if we actually get to ride it.

Deep stalkers were pretty cute. Merrill thought so, anyway.

I'm not opposed to having a mabari in DA3. But in addition to some concerns I laid out in the opening post, I worry that they will become "old hat."

We did have a bronto in Golems of Amgarrak. He was a ranger summon.

The one issue with brontos is that I don't think they do so well up on the surface, based on what I read in Legacy. They're subterranean beasties and sunlight makes them skittish.

Maybe if they change up the Mabari's personality a bit? In DA:O and DA 2, the Mabaris were those loyal, cute, if sometimes a bit dumb looking goofs. They always reminded me of Alistair, to be honest. Maybe they could give us a female Mabari that's actually kind of arrogant and would rather tear out someone's throat than be petted.

Oh wait, that sounds like a cat...again. I just can't get past the cats. >.<

After getting booted across the room by Leliana's tasseled shoe, Bon Bon is back, and he's pissed, proving rage incarnate can come in small packages. Claim the Bon Bon companion as your own when you pre-order Dragon Age 3 Signature Edition!

Amusing though that may be, methinks we shan't see the return of Bon Bon. :P

You must have had very mean cats growing up.

No, actually. Then again, of my three cats, one died of cancer and the other one ran away and was never found again. But the third one was a total sweetheart. When he got old and lost his teeth, he'd always drool when you petted him. And then he...also died.

Maybe I'm bitter?
Or I just spend too much time looking at captioned kitty pics.

I can't lie, I laughed, LOL.

Anyways, a Ghast sounds interesting!
As far as a cat goes, though, only easy way I can see that is if it's a large cat. Like a cougar or tiger. xD Otherwise, I don't think they'd be too helpful in battle as a companion.
