and those who do possess all required skills but simply cannot wait to play the game with all available content (hence some strong encryption for the DLC). That's perfectly OK - from the viewpoint of a big company. But seeing legal owners applaud it for that decision is a bit strange.Basically you're praising them for loosening your shackles a bit.

But thats the sad thing, you could download the full Collectors Edition *before* you could even buy it here...so it was like *siiiiiiiiiiiiigh*

You can download the EA Download Manager, add your key and you should be able to download DAO from there. I haven't tried myself because I have a digital version already but I heard it works. Right now, my game shows as installed in the download manager.

And come on, a CD check is the best protection in terms of customer respect, people.

Can I just download the game free and then use my CD Key ?

Yes you can through EA Download manager.  Download that program, log in with your account, and put in your CD Key in the Activation tab.  You will be able download the Digital Distribution version of the game from them and play it.

You know why most people are annoyed by a CD check? The continuous spinning of the drive, making RPM, slowing down, spinning up, having to anchor computer cases to walls / floors, having to game with earplugs in, unable to enjoy the game's sound unless you'd turn up your stereo set to 11. Yes ELEVEN.

;)

*sigh*  I understood you were making a jokey, Magic.

That gave me a chucle, cheers ;)

yeah but wil bioware buy me a new cd when this one is all worn and cracked ?

Exactly my point!
I prefer the CD to be in the warm safe colored little box instead in the rom, and after all sometimes you have to remove it and place it again.... nevermind, I think that the CD KEY is the most important, not the CD itself, I'm sure Bioware cant look at my CD if it's legal, much easier with just a simple registered legal CD KEY provided with the original game - Tell me where I'm wrong

EDIT: I'm playing the game all the time logged in in my Bioware Account, isn't that enough ????

I brought this subject up not too long ago.  My reason for a no CD patch was that my drive runs quite loud and it slowly started to annoy me.  However, you can download the EA downloader and re-install a no-CD version of the game using your key given with the physical copy you bought.  It might take 7 hours, but it works!

Seriously.  If we operate under the assumption that the game needs some form of protection, then a simple disc check is by far the most consumer-friendly option.  It's infinitely better than SecuROM, requiring an Internet connection, or any of the other BS that publishers have tried in the past.  I applaud BioWare and EA for their decision to release DA:O with just a disc check!

If you don't like it, you can 1) purchase the digital edition, or 2) register your physical CD key with the EA Download Manager and download the digital edition through that, or 3) stop playing the game.

Since you can already download a no-CD version of the game from EA's Download Manager, it is unlikely that they will provide a no-CD patch for some time. Even if they were planning on providing one a few months down the line (depending on how sales tail off), they would be very unlikely to announce those plans at this time.

It goes without saying that the above refers to PC only. I presume no one is seriously asking to be able to play console games without the original disk in the drive. Interesting how attitudes vary.

This works great. Really fantastic from BW/EA to offer this option to those who bought the retail version. Now we get the best of both worls.

Bioware will not be removing the CD check any time soon.

They have deliberately used this method of copy protection, as they felt it provides the best balance between minimising piracy (particularly casual piracy from non-technical people) and looking after their customers (by ensuring that it doesn't prevent their customers from playing the game).

Bioware has gotten a lot of praise over this decision, as it reverses the course that many developers and publishers have been on, that of more and more intrusive copy protection schemes.

This scheme used by bioware is a return to about 10 years ago, and they should be applauded for looking very carefully at how to look after their paying customers and taking a risk on "less intrusive copy protection"

Can you please point me at anyone who praises the need to keep a disc in the drive?

When I first start up DA:O, I can't load initially because while it says I'm logged on with my EA profile, it isn't really logged on yet, and I can't load my save game without logging it to verify I'm entitled to my purchased content. Between the limited activations, and needing an internet connection to constantly phone home, is a disc check remotely necessary at this point?

I doubt it provides any semblance of piracy prevention, and yet it annoys paying customers.

I find it very hard to believe that anyone in their right mind "PRAISED" the decision.

Count me as one who supports it, and you should too.  Or would you prefer something like SecuROM that can cripple your computer with it's custom drivers?

Look at it this way, it puts you on the same ground as 360/PS3 owners who have to put the disc in to play, and you don't see them whining like the PC users do you?

Dragon Age: Origins has no activation limit and does not require that you log in to play with any official DLC.  I play offline 99% of the time, connecting only at the end of my sessions to upload new achievements and check for DLC updates.

I fully support EA's option to use a simple disc check for this game, as it is by far the most consumer-friendly option available.

The game tells me it can't load my saves when I first load the game. I have to wait about 30 seconds before the EA login kicks in.

You don't need to log in.  Really.

To be clear on this:

EA allows you to download a game you have bought legally at retail (in a store in a box) via their site. It is NOT via the EA Download Manager (EADM). You'll need to log in to to your EA account. There's a post (be me, even ;) ) in the Tech Forums on how to do this - but only if you have bought the game legally i.e. in a store in a box.

EA themselves says on the site that the reason for this is exactly what we're discussing here:

People wanting to protect their discs and some other stuff...

I think it's quite naive to suggest that many people wouldn't know how to pirate a game. If you have the intention, you can find out. The masses are dumb, but not so much when it comes to finding ways to save a few bucks. No, as always, the CD check only bothers the honest customer. At least the developers save money by not having to license a third-party protection system, but that's about it.

I of course welcome the more customer friendly trend, and hope that enough players will be honest enough to buy the game, so that it pays off for BioWare and EA.

That said, it most definitely does work in the EA Download Manager as well.

I'll post screenshots. It refuses to load my save games unless I'm logged in. If I manually disable the DLC, it then says I have the "Force Load" option to load the game without the DLC. When the DLC is enabled, but I'm not logged in, I can't load my save games.

I manually logged out and told it not to log in again at about the time that Bono appeared in my inventory, and I haven't had any trouble with DLCs. It all just works.

Wait, my mistake. It was The Edge.

Do you have the Collector's Edition? It specifically barks about the Collector's Edition DLC.

This thread is now locked because many people seem unable to follow the simple instruction: "Don't post information about how to circumvent copy protection".
