I have figured out the problem:

* Uninstall Arrival.
* Blow up the
Heretic base in ME2.
* Side with Tali in the AI core even if you have the
persuade options.
* Use Legion for your Tech expert (he takes one in the
flashlight, thus ending that problem).
* With Arrival uninstalled you
cannot commit genocide on the Batarians (the 105th Marines do that
instead -- you do sacrifice this war asset, however).

In ME3 you get Geth VI instead of Legion and don't get the
peace option, so you must choose either Quarians or Geth.

* Don't let Geth
VI upload the reaper code, and the Quarians then are responsible for
finishing off the Geth.
* And on the final assault to the beam, take EDI
with you because she'll get killed in the laser blast.

This is as clean as it gets.

Shepard does not commit genocide during the events off Arrival.

Make sure you do Tali's loyalty mission.

One race does not take precedence over another. A stigma is attached because they are Synthetic. They have every right to live, which makes Destroy so awful.

If all Pandas had to die to save all the other furry animals, I would kill all Pandas.

So we have to deliberately f*ck over EDI and Legion to get an "ethically okay" Destroy ending?

How is that "ethically okay"?

(Don't bite the bait, boys. I understand the meta-gaming part, I just thought this was funny.)

Destroy is ethically okay...
If it killed eight or ten races to kill the Reapers, it would be ethically okay...

It's just bull****...

Make sure you use a bad fire team leader or legion won't die.

It really doesn't matter if you do this right. You just can't use any persuade options after his loyalty mission.

Garrus as fire team leader works fine. He and Miranda are your best fire team leaders. Legion has "issues" because you wouldn't let him send the intel to his peeps, nor would you compromise and let him send any unclassified intel. You just ordered him not to send anything, and blantantly sided with Tali. Because of this he is distracted and takes one in the flashlight.

While I agree with Tabs that in principle that both Geth and Quarians have a right to exist, but with the Heretic base blown + Legion gone you get this Geth VI instead. This won't allow you to have the conversation options for peace. So you must choose. The Quarians have the larger fleet now, so obviously you pick them for the EMS points, and how convenient you were just following orders: You delivered the Quarian fleet to Hackett no matter the cost. Thus you can now go into Javik's quarters after the mission and wash your hands of the synthetic hydraulic fluid of the Geth -- don't forget to use the renegade interrupts on Geth VI after Tali deactivates him: all three of them. They add points to your reputation.

EDI -- I hated this, but taking her on the final assault gets her killed now. I saw this in a tweet. Or was it in the podcast. I don't remember.

Yes this whole thing is metagaming for the win. Just so you can tell the Catalyst as you fire the gun at the red tube and see that frown: "Good Good. Feel the butthurt flow through you.":devil:

Let me rewrite the OP.

How to have an ethically okay Destroy ending:

1. Choose Destroy.

The End

Since this involves ignoring the P/R options to keep Legion's loyalty, wouldn't it be just as easy to skip a bunch of these steps and just ignore the P/R options on Rannoch?

No.  You're not getting it. I don't kill them.  Someone else kills them beforehand.

And I know just what to do to make sure it happens.

There, that's better...
Hooray!!! I fixed nature!!!
There's something fundamentally wrong with the universe and we have to rewrite it with a god gun or synthetic life will kill us all!!!

What's that, you say?
Universe altering God Guns don't exist but artificial intelligence does?

Welp, I guess we're ****ed...

Nature is much of the time "Us or them". We try to put chivalry in everything, when sometimes surviving is the best option, and to be honest in the end, the most ethical option.

See when those options pop up at Rannoch, the fate of entire races are at stake. Suit wetters will obviously go for the peace option no matter what.

Now if you look at Legion as a machine, it's supposed to operate on logic, not emotion, right? Having issues is an emotional response, right? But if you divorce yourself from yourself and put yourself in Commander Shepard's shoes as a hard ass you'll be thinking: Legion has been talking like a machine. Logic. If this, then that. Legion can hack through anything. Best tech expert on the team. Best choice to go through the vent. Even though you as the player know because you didn't allow the intel to be uploaded it's going to be emotionally distracted due to faulty scripting on the part of BioWare. So this is BioWare's fault. Not yours.

This is why you want to do this. You want Geth VI and not Legion on Rannoch. It removes the temptation and makes that choice "cleaner." And you have Tali constantly reminding you "Remember Shepard, this is NOT Legion. Legion would have understood."  And make sure you blew up the Heretic base in ME2 so that the Quarian fleet is the larger of the two which makes the choice easier. See how this works?

I didn't have an ethical problem at all.

I made a sacrifice to definitively ensure to continuity of many other species.
