--- Yes, the Extended Cut really seems to be bringing around two reactions. One reaction, about half of the people, seem to be saying "The EC does a great job... at fixing what was wrong in the first place," and the other half seem to be saying "The EC makes things worse." I'm both camps, personally.

From a sense that the previous ending was broken, yes, the EC does fix it. The Catalyst's circular pretzel-logic is now less "I'm just bad writing" and now more "I'm a bad character who's clearly retarded." The three endings used to all be "And then Shepard blew up 95% of the inhabited galaxy and stranded the other 5% to never be able to go to space again." Now they're all "And then Shepard betrayed (Insert race, friend, morality here) and secured continued existence, miserable or abominable as it may be, for (insert survivors of Shepard's betrayal.)" The endings used to say "We don't listen to our paying customers." Now they say "We listen to our paying customers... but refuse to act upon their arguments, possibly out of arrogance, possibly out of feat that we'd lose clout in an industry."

But from the standpoint of Mass Effect 3 being a VIDEOGAME, the endings are all still a failure. Videogames should begin with some sort of a victory. A self-sacrificing hero can pull out a victory, if his sacrifice saves those he was fighting for. And we don't get that with Shepard. Throughout the game, we all get to decide what we're fighting for. We can champion all life, we can put Humanity first, we can go for unity and peace... among Organics, but screw the Toasters, they're just machines. We can find a degree in between, I suppose. Never tried a playthrough where I wanted Shep to be a friend to all Levo-protien species, but hated those filthy Dextros. But the game forces us in the end to be fighting for... well, honestly, I don't know what we're fighting for at the end. The dream scenes and the ending seem to force Shepard to be fighting out of regret and desperation. And I never got that feel from anything that "I" made Shepard say. I never got that feeling from anything that Hackett said- well, before they traveled back in time and made him whine about how only the Magic MacGuffin could save us all... by screwing us all.

--- One thing I still can't understand is people THANKING BioWare. If you go to a Restaurant, and you order a steak, and they bring you asparagus, and you argue and argue, but then a month later they bring you a cold, chewed on steak, don't thank them, slam the door in their faces.

And once again Bluestorm83 hits the bullseye!! Agree 100%. The EC DLC took a F to a C- that's how I see it. Am I thankful, I guess, in the regards that ME is not totally clusterf@$%ed but as a whole it's still pretty bad and it's primarily due to the existence of glowstickboy. Simply retconing that little dip**** and his retard logic out of the story fixes 95% of the problems

I don't get Twitter. Explanations via secondary media do not count for canon data. If Arthur Conan Doyle had to bring back Sherlock Holmes due to popular demand, why not Bioware and Cmdr. Shepard?

---  I don't just not GET Twitter, I don't DO Twitter.  I hate the very CONCEPT of Twitter.  Furthermore, I don't do Cellphones, so any info from the ME games there is gone.  I shouldn't have to buy a new goddamn piece of HARDWARE for every ****ting series that I like that wants to branch out.  Whatever happened to self-contained products?

Wow, the Extended Cut is brilliant! It fixes everything!

It explains clearly, succintly and artisticly, without seeming the least bit patronising, every single problem in the original ending.

It shows us why Javik(!) is willing to abandon me at the beam, after suffering a minor injury.
It shows us why Coates casually overlooks not one but two of humanities greatest heroes when he reports that nobody made it.
It makes it perfectly clear how Anderson seems to teleport around the Citadel.
It explains exactly how and why TIM shows up when he does.
It shows us how TIM is capable of physically controlling both Shepard and Anderson.
It gives good reasons for renegade Shep to not just shoot TIM the instant he shows up.
It explains why Joker and Garrus are so keen to run away and leave me behind without a second thought. After all, neither of them would ever think about putting their friends before their orders.
It clarifies the hologramatic ament's fevered ramblings so that they actually make coherent sense.
It allows us to respond to the holo-moron's 'destroy will kill geth and EDI because I can't tell the difference' by pointing out that our Interferometric Array can provide "a real-time map of ... each and every Reaper in the Milky Way", and that ME2 introduced a minor little gadget called a Reaper IFF...
It allows us to remind the holo-idiot that he just said a minute ago that synthesis can't be forced and now he's telling us to force it.
It explains how the Reaper/God/Shepard thing created by picking blue electrocution manages to retain the identity of Shepard, when it should logically be harder to transfer a mind intact from an organic body to a synthetic one than it is to transfer an AI from one blue box to another (which we are explicitly told is impossible).
It explains how synthesis works.
It explains how synthesis manages to differentiate between various levels of complexity and advancement, to avoid the creation of partially organic furniture, and partially synthetic bacteria.
It makes the decision of what to do with the Rachni relevant.
It gives us a clear context and point for the whole sequence of the Normandy running away, crashing/landing on garden world, etc.
It answers the question of why the death of a random kid haunts Shepard's dreams, while the good friends lost on Virmire or the Collector base are forgotten.
It shows us what happened to all the people on the Citadel when the Reapers took control.
It shows us all of our interesting War assets in action, like those awesome Elcor super heavy infantry and the charge of the Krogan cavalry.
It gives characters like Emily Wong, Kal'Reegar and Mess Sergeant Gardner the appearances they deserve, even if only for a brief heroic death scene.
It shows us Tali's face. For real, this time.
It puts the 'breath scene' into context and makes it make sense.
It ties up all the loose ends, like you'd expect from the third title in a trilogy.
And in the end we get to kick back on a beach with our friends, raise a glass to those who didn't make it, and celebrate saving the galaxy.

After all, we told BioWare how awful the original endings were on every imaginable level. And they said they were listening.

There's no way they'd be stupid enough to just give us the same ending with a bit more polish.

There's no way they'd be stupid enough to think that the problem was with our understanding of the endings, not with the ****ing endings.

There's no way they'd be stupid enough to give the job of fixing it to the same incompetents who ****ed it up in the first place. And not put it through rigourous QA to make sure that they actually fixed the problems.

There's no way EA would be stupid enough to let them put out any old crap without putting it past their own QA and playtesting first.

There's no...

**** it. There's no point going on with this ****. "We're listening" was just another lie after all. Add it to the lists.

Goodbye BioWare.

Thank you on behalf of Rockstar Games, Square Enix, THQ, Volition inc. and Eidos Interactive, who have already benefitted from money that I would otherwise have spent on your products (such as the ME action figures, comics and novels, and the Dragon Age table-top RPG), or those of your overlords at EA.

I hope you enjoy the money you squeezed out of me for the collector's edition. You won't be getting any more. This was your last chance, and you blew it. Partly with this pathetic excuse for a fix, but mostly with your ****ty attitude. I'll spend my money on someone who actually wants it.

Because they just left it up to head-canon. They never really told us Shepard was dead. At least for the 'survive ending.'

But go on twitter or view the SEDCC and they can't even agree on what it means.  One says Shepard's dead, another says it's a beacon of hope because Shepard lives, and another says there's clearly a reunion because Shepard's alive.  It's implied.

Yes twitter, inteviews, fan panel discussions.  This is where all game content should be explained.

The unvarnished truth.  What is well not so funny is this:

Everything we all had guessed that the original endings meant are exactly what the writers show in the EC that they meant.  They created a bare bones ending and it seems they did not know what they were writing or really trying to say.  We filled in the blanks for them.  But every person that did that repeatedly said something like, "this is probably what the stupid endings mean."  Seriously,  the Joker running away scene and having teammates on board on the jungle planet - fans said they probably got picked up in London by Joker before he was told to retreat.  But, everyone thought that was stupid.  The Normandy on the planet was completely changed based on what fans said about it.  The mass relay destruction, changed.  The meaning of control-everyone asked how Shepard could be controlling the reapers after death so we said they probably stupidly mean that Shepard's essence will go into the reapers and Shepard will become the new catalyst or something.  And synthesis is also based on stuff people said, changed to somewhat explain "a new...DNA".

And this is kind of what happened with the game and ending to begin with.  Some time ago before ME3 came out a member here posted what he would not like the ending to be and he was prophetic because that's exactly what we got.

And this is kind of what happened with the game and ending to begin with.  Some time ago before ME3 came out a member here posted what he would not like the ending to be and he was prophetic because that's exactly what we got.

so they basically put sprinkles on what we around know is crap, by still breaking Characters to keep the ending, the whole Jungle planet scene is still really pointless especially after the EC, most people still think the "Shepard AI" will be the new bad guy

And you know what? I might have forgiven just about all of that if only

The geth and EDI had a better sendoff

Shepard's survival was definitive rather than amibguous.

Yup, now I pretty much just hang out on the bethesda forums and great post I agree.

sorry for the long post.

I'm new to the forum,
but after playing thru ME3 (orig and ex-cut) several times and letting it digest, I've come to a few conclusions about why I have complaints and issues, beyond the fact that BioWare is killing the ME series. For starters, I love ME2! But, parts of ME3 were very good as well, but overall, it was found wanting.

The battle scenes, sound effects, soundtrack and graphics were phenomenal, beautiful and performed flawlessly for me. But, as has been addressed, it became a shooter, which, for the ME universe, is a fail, albeit, if they would've switched back to the RPG after the battles it would have been fine, the ME series always reminded me of a highly interactive movie, and I liked that. I liked seeing all my decisions and choices played out through the game.

Furthermore, there were several occasions where, I found myself choked up (as I did in ME2) (now, I'm not a wuss, by a long shot, but having to say goodbye to a respected superior, or saying last possible goodbyes to old friends and fellow squad mates, is always hard.) So parts of the storyline were good.

One of my complaints, that, some of y'all have touched on, were the undeveloped speech options. Specifically, the options related to "how Shep felt" after certain traumatic events, loads of stress and neg occurrences. I always choose those speech options, but they dead-ended with some lame comment, such as; "you'll be okay Shepard" or "you can't save them all Shepard". I would have liked to have seen that developed more, to show that, Shep wasn't superhuman, cold or unfeeling. Fact is, when individuals experience traumatic events, at some point they have to let it out or discuss it, or it will tear them up from inside out with the typical neg consequences. I was really wanting a momentary "Shep break down" scene. Where he;
goes into the med bay, wearing his armor, minus helmet, to have the doc check a shoulder wound. But instead he tells the doc, "I...can't sleep.." and when the doc tries to hand him sleep agents, Shep responds "no...every time I close my eyes....I see the child...I watched die..." never making eye contact with the doc. Of course, the doc would've made that lame "you can't save em all Shepard" response. To which, I wanted Shep to explode, maybe, rip a surgical table out of the floor and throw it across the med bay (away from doc, of course) then, he breaks down further, and into a rant along the lines of "if i sacrifice the innocent what have i gained...more importantly.....what have I lost?!?" "people are looking to me to solve everything...to have all the answers...they're throwing their lives away, in my name!....Why me?!? I'm just a soldier! My life doesn't have more value than anyone else's life!!! In fact...my life is probably worth less....Cerebrus has the catalyst...I failed" Shep punches a med bay wall (leaving a large dent) At which point Shep collapses on the floor with his back against a med bay wall, staring off into space, with tears rolling down his face (but not crying) cutting into the battle field dirt and grime on his face. The doc immediately calls Sheps friends and romanced character, (Garrus, Kaiden, Tali etc in my games) they pick Shep up, escort him to his cabin (providing cover), where Garrus and Kaiden stand guard outside Shep's cabin and say something along the lines of "no one gets into Shepard's cabin! Roger that!" as Tali, locks the door, removes his armor, tends to his wound, maybe cleans his face. The entire time Tali has her helmet off,( in front of Shep only, of course) Tali speaks to him softly, something along the lines of "I will keep the nightmares away my love" and "when this is over, my love, you still owe me a house on the home-world. We've both given so much of ourselves to fighting and political work, it's time we become selfish with each other". Tali puts Shep to bed and they both fall asleep, Tali is awakened by Shep's nightmare and she wakes him, saying "I've got you" but the next time she wakes, Shep is gone, she panics briefly but she finds him at the fish tank, where, he makes an analogy about the fish and if, they viewed humans killing them, as we view reapers and what chance do they...we... have?!? Etc etc. Tali asks about the nightmares and puts him back to bed, speaking to him softly, as Tali starts to slip into sleep, she hears Shep, finally, say, "Tali...I....love you" she smiles and says "I know my love" as she holds him tighter than ever. When Shep and Tali get up, they get dressed, but Tali doesn't leave Shep's side, realising, how far Shep has let her in. Garrus and Kaiden each come in the room and talk to Shep. Something along the lines of; "You've always been there for us and you've never lead us wrong or let us down. We're here whenever you need us, for anything, Old Friend" (AKA they put him back together again) Naturally, the doc pays him a visit, and Shep trys to apologize, but the doc cuts him off and says something along the lines of "my dear commander Shepard, you have nothing to apologize for, I'm glad to see you're still human...but, next time, my dear commander.......talk to me sooner, the med bay equipment would last longer. And, I'd recommend another 6-8hrs of rest...but, I doubt you'll take my advice.....perhaps, Tali can assist me with my recommendation"...doc winks at Tali, and asks to speak to her outside. As they speak, doc says "he's hurting Tali, and honestly, I think you can help him more than I" as she turns to walk away, she turns back..."by the way....it's a rare thing to see the commander in love...I approve....it looks good, on both of you...even if I am a bit jealous, my dear." in her heavy English accent.
This would have been an easy and simple way to show Shep's humanity and furthermore that Shep is not a cold, unfeeling automaton and brought the game firmly back into the RPG realm. It also, I feel, would've made a better connection between gamer and character. After all, those of us that have been in....hostile or devastating situations would sympathise with and understand this reaction completely.

My other issue was, Shep's lack of injuries, meaning, he can fall 60ft, bounce, then get right up and start shooting. Or he, gets blasted 70ft into a wall, hops up and starts shooting. How? If the gamer can kill him....he should become injured from time to time. I would've liked to see, Shep's team having to pull his unconscious or injured body back to the ship, just to show A) he can be injured and he is not super human. B) his crew's loyalty.
Most everyone has been hospitalised for various reasons, some more serious than others. And the one thing you learn is; who your friends are and who actually cares. It also forces you to except your limits. It tends to re-focus most of us, remind us, what's worth fighting for and what's truly important in our lives.

I completely agree with all your comments about the crucible and the catalyst. Talk about, out of left field! Considering all the high tech hackers in the ME universe, (besides, Kasumi, Solarians, Asari, Quarians, Geth etc etc) there'd be no way a Protheian device of that magnitude could have stayed hidden, that long, directly under everyone's nose!  Its all way to...convenient.  It would have been way more believable, if it was on an undiscovered, unknown or unexplored planet.

I'm also confused by the lack of attempts on Shep's life. Cerebrus and the Reapers know he's "getting in the way". At some point, one or both would've made an attempt or two, to "remove the problem" but no...Some would say that Cerebrus attempted it at their base. But Shep was being a thorn in their side long before that. So the "attempt" was...weak, at best. It would have been surprising, to say the least, to most, if an attempt on Shep's life was made, on the Normandy. Talk about a thriller.

That brings us to the endings. The orig ending left and created alot of questions. The ex-cut ending still left and created questions, but it did answer some- so, it was better. Here are my issues; why did the Normandy crew leave Shep? They have no prob disobeying orders, and Shep didn't leave Joker on the SR1! But they just left?!? Why?
And Garrus was the one that said "they had to leave"?!? Talk about a complete betrayal by the Normandy crew.....ask any firefighter, LEO or soldier-you NEVER leave a man, a friend behind! Particulary, one that saved your ass on multiple occasions, and gave his life for you before. Joker would have said "F$!? The orders! We're getting Shepard! Same for everyone else!

Now, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the planet the Normandy (SR2) went down on, is the same planet the ole man and kid were talking, (after the credits) correct? That brings up more questions! Like, who stayed? Why? Did the Normandy ever leave? Etc etc

Now discussing the ending related to Shep. I created several endings in my head as i played through ME3, that would've brought closure and a better, all around ending. For example, Shep has always fostered relationships with people he didn't know. He never asked, "what do I get out of it" he just selflessly put his life on the line for people, that later became friends. So, one ending I thought of, would have brought those relationships full circle; Shep detonates the catalyst- as it starts to explode, he collapses, suddenly a biotic bubble surrounds him, Kasumi appears next to him in the protective bubble, "we got you Shep!" Samara, yells "my field can't protect them from the explosion!" another biotic barrier appears between the explosion and the bubble, with Shep and Kasumi, Jack yells "I got it!" Jacob runs in to help pull Shep out. (I'm using my character choices as examples)
Now there's 2 options to complete this ending A) Shep dies, surrounded by his friends. Or B) his friends pull Shep's ass out of the fire (literally) for the first time and its left open.

Ideally, it should be the Normandy crew saving him, just on pure principal. A nice ending would have been Garrus, Kaiden etc (whomever your game save imported) drag Shep towards the Normandy, when a few husks appear and are immediately blasted by a shot gun, that Tali is holding and she says something along the lines of "stay away from my man, bosh'tets!!!!" (this scenario would play out with whomever your Shep romanced)

A surprising ending would have been; as Shep detonates the catalyst, he collapses, but just before losing consciousness, he sees a form coming towards him. The cutscene reveals Kolyat, pulling Shep out and into a shuttle. Kolyat notifies the Normandy of his pick up, but notes; "The Commander is in very bad shape.."

Another nice ending, would have been a zoom in of a house, on the Quarian home world. As you get closer, you see Shep bandaged up, next to Tali with no mask. Then a pan out. Fitting...

But the endings available in the game now are- he suffers and dies alone or he suffers alone but seems to live. Completely negating all the friendships he fostered! Where were they when HE needed THEM?!?! Which brings up questions as well.

The side missions are very disappointing-fly to planet, scan, go back....why even bother?

The weapon customisations, seemed great, at first, but then I realised you only ever get 2 slots. I had hoped as you progressed through the game, you would unlock/earn more slots..but, no.

So I'm 50/50 on ME3, orig and ex-cut, I'm disappointed in the endings,  I expected more, to say the least. And I definitely expected a better level boss at the end. But I also expected a better solution to the Reapers.

I can only hope, that BioWare, continues to produce Mass Effect games and not just DLC. I read a quote by someone, but can't recall, who or where I read it, so i cant give credit, but it went something like; " With BioWare ending the Mass Effect series, I can see BioWare sliding into obscurity."
That's a very real possibility, they have a huge following with ME, it'd be foolish to throw away guaranteed, revenue producing games that already have a following, the backlash from fans prove the following of the ME series. It'd be like testing a new pistol....on your foot!

Is it sad that;
I can come up with 3-4 better endings, within 5-10mins, Than BioWare could do 2 endings in a year?

The sad blatant misinformation (!) from an anonymous executive made an interview on Kotaku is that game forums do not represent the opinion of people who buy games.

We are led to believe that the majority of people who bought ME3 do not read ME3 forums, therefore if the majority on ME3 forums say the game endings suck they should be ignored as minority.

Actually every game forum is being frequented by enough people to make them good sample size for the total customer opinion for any game.

Ah yes, the same executive also says that according to marketing research data people do like such endings and they as a company only take account cold marketing data and we are all entitled whiners.

Actually people do not want these endings but you for the sake of cost efficiency try to force this crap down into our throats and call it public opinion (And of course we are entitled. If we buy a game, we want to pay only for the product made as WE want. If not we do not buy. But misleading attempts never stop. Like misleading Twitter posts).

You would love to make a single type of game and sell it to everybody by either brainwashing them or forcing the game to them outright don't you? A single kind of game...

You producers/publishers whatever you are, you hate demographics, different customer segments and opinions. Because making different games is not cost efficient.

So for instance, you force multiplayer in ME3 as a new income stream and then ****** people off with bad endings (because you spent on multiplayer so much that you couldn't find money to spend on a better ME3 script). And then feel obliged to present multiplayer DLCs for free just to appease the angry people (but you had originally planned to sell them and started this multiplayer business only for that) and you call this business practice what?

Good management? Visionary approach? Well American/Canadian game industry (paws, claws, tentacles whatever) proved itself to be incompetent and that they can't deliver quality games anymore -- not in current economic conditions (except very few games like Skyrim).

You won't get my money though. A more productive system promoting quality games will emerge sooner or later (like in good old 80s and 90s).

Cloud gaming, NVIDIA graphics card virtualization, high power Tegra 3 or newer tablets, whatever...

We fans will endure. As for you... either you will change your tune or will go bankrupt. I couldn't care less. I am patient. I can wait.

Let's see OUYA Android gaming console and Indies. Oh wait! You hate them too. Competitors I think :). A hacker and modder friendly open gaming system like OUYA would be great my friends. I am sick of big companies trying to bully me. But like the hero of the famous Full Throttle game once said: Won't budge!

PS: Why Starchild endings are totally unrelated to ME3? Because they had planned to make Illuisive Man the boss of the endgame fight. But then one executive came and told them time is up and that he could not spend more money on the IM fight. So developers in their haste, invented the Starchild. Well that's just my opinion though. No need to go spreading around :)

Take it from someone who can never be brief, you have nothing to apologize for.  I do so love your scenarios.  The genius of Kasumi or Kolyat and/or the team rescuing Shepard or dying together.  Man, I would have cried a bathtub full if they died together and then I would have said, "well played."  And then I'd have tried for an everyone survives ending (hopefully).

Fantastic post.

I'll spend my money on someone who actually wants it.

best post I've read since I first saw the EC endings!
