What's funny is that had they put the EC in originally AND amended the high EMS, Shep rubble scene for a high EMS Shep survives to see another day with LI scene, they probably would have avoided 75% of the flack they got.
Probably.

... I liked this. I went in expecting to be utterly disappointed. I instead felt it was extremely well done.
Is it perfect? Oh, hell no. But the fact they managed to address 90% of the massive list of problems the original ending had is impressive. The endings work so much better, the feeling of accomplishment is so much stronger, and the personal investment towards your crew and love interest pays off in dividends.
It's apparent they did listen, they did try, and they did address an overwhelming number of problems people had, and the final product now is significantly more satisfying. It may not be an "A+", but it pretty much went from a flat "F" to an encouraging "B".

What the hell is the point of seeing the Normandy crash on the jungle planet and then take off again? The whole scene should have been removed, but I guess Bioware didn't want to remove stuff as it would be an admission of messing things up.
At a guess, I think it's part of the idea of rebuilding after the damage done by the fight with the reapers. We rebuild technology and move on.

overall improvement, but still this game is bad and not worth money I paid for it. I am not buying bioware games anymore and not coming back to this forum either. My only regret is that I still have 800 bioware points. So long fellow mass effect fans. See you in other franchises.

The extended cut is definitely an improvement over the original endings. There are still plenty of flaws, but I think it's the best Bioware could have done once they decided, for better or worse, to keep the original endings intact.

On a related note, does anyone else see "equality" in the pro/con of each ending? Seems like BW really wanted people to NOT choose destroy.
Control:
Pro
1.) Reapers under control. Cycle ends.
2.) Shepard is now Mall Cop for the Galaxy
3.) Relays Rebuilt quickly
Con
1.) Shepard dead
2.) Potential for Shepard to become the next "Catalyst" (Renegade Control dialog)
3.) No reunion with LI
4.) Synthetics can still be built
Synthesis
Pro
1.) Reapers leave. Cycle ends.
2.) EDI/Geth are "alive" (take that however you will)
3.) Relays Rebuilt quickly(?)
4.) "Improved" life (DNA); Synthetics no longer needed.
Con
1.) Shepard dead
2.) Husk/Indoctrinated/Reaper forces - what happens when they regained sentience?
3.) No reunion with LI
Destroy
Pro
1.) Reapers dead. Cycle ends.
2.) Shepard alive
3.) Implied LI Reunion
Con
1.) Geth Dead
2.) EDI dead
3.) Longer to rebuild relays
4.) Implied "Rise of Synthetics" eventually

Just did the synthesis ending and watched the others. Yup, they fixed it. I cried even. The Catalyst discussion greatly benefits from the whole 'conversation' bit added in, the Normandy doing stupid stuff throughout was either explained or fixed, and the fate of the galaxy was far less uncertain.
The endings were not perfect. There were a whole bunch of things BW could have done instead, but sticking to their guns, they got a pretty good ending out of it. Not great, but good.
The funny thing is that after beating the game the first time, I was done with Mass Effect and BW, and I never wanted to play again. Then the EC is announced and I give it a chance, now I am looking forward to starting more playthroughs. It's a shame that the game didn't ship like this because I like it a hella lot more now.

The desparation of their situation was watered down severely in the scene where Shepard calls for evac of her injured squad. With the fate of the galaxy imminently at risk, and with Harbinger firing down upon them, she calls an evac? Really? And tells her crewmates they need to protect the Normandy?
Bioware certainly addressed the issues raised by the unhappy few, and the result was a lot of hand-holding. "Its ok Timmy, the collective races of the galaxy are pretty smart; they'll figure it out". "Don't cry Timmy, the Normandy eventually gets repaired and they fly off". "Don't worry little ones, they can figure out how to rebuild the Citidel, and maybe even the mass relays!".
Seriously, am I the only one who didn't need to hear all of this? It was obvious the relays didn't blow up like the one in the arrival dlc. It was obvious that everyone left alive was going to be ok. We have survived on our home planet for a long time without the relays, and so did every other race that successfully discovered them. The Protheans successfully reverse-engineered one, why couldn't someone in the current cycle do so also?
It didn't matter why Joker had been piloting through the mass relay at the time. The explanation given (that they were heading to rendezvous) make sense, and one one of the half dozen possible explanations that came to me the first time I played it. Did anyone seriously entertain the notion that Joker was a coward that abandoned the fight? Seriously?
Put yourself in Shepard's shoes. You are severely wounded, fighting to keep consciousness. You have been through more hardship than can possibly be imagined. The fate of the galaxy is in your hands, and you are confronted by a god-entity that is far beyond your possible understanding. Oh yeah, and the clock is ticking. At any moment, the reaper army could wipe you out. Is it really an issue that she didn't take the time to have a lengthy interrogation? Am I really the only one that thought this?
My seven-year-old accepts bittersweet endings, and even uncertain ones. It can be fun to imagine what would happen next. It has been a great literary device for a long, long time. How upset were those who watched Prometheus, which was about as clear as a brick wall? They weren't, because they are adults and because it was a good movie. The feedback to Bioware is a MASSIVE injustice. They have slaved for years, and delivered a product that, in my view, far surpasses anything else offered in the industry. And even though they altered their precious work, to appease their fans, they will in all probability still be harassed and insulted.
I hope this serves as a cautionary tale to all artists in the video game industry. Trust your instincts and do what you think is best. Their is a reason you are the elite in the industry. Do not pander to the trolls. Their are a vast many who love the work you have done.

You've restored my faith in you. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
I am genuinely impressed with how you did it. You still kept your endings, and made them passable while also giving me some more incredible moments.
I expected that this would be little more than a handwave, a placating of people to restore some amount of credibility. I expected to be, at best, ambivalent about the Extended Cut.
You blew those expectations out of the water. Thank you.

Let the indoctrination theory rest already. Bioware did a good job with this EC it fixed the plot holes, gave details about the catalyst and fleshed out the ending alot. Thank you Bioware.
Hahahahahahahaaaaaa....no.
It makes 3 different endings out of 1 rainbow ending, but all of the core problems with the ending are still here and completely unexplained. They're hoping their (admittedly good) epilogues will distract you from the utter **** that is the core concept of the ending itself. And they seem to be right in banking on that for most people.

- You may notice that in the “Shepard lives” ending, the love interest hesitates to place Shepard’s name on the wall, and instead looks up as though deep in thought. This is meant to suggest that the love interest is not ready to believe Shepard is dead, and the final scene reveals they are correct. As the Normandy lifts off, there is hope that the love interest and Shepard will again be together.
Yeah, that´s totally almost the same as to actually experience the joy of reunion and completion of love arc of the trilogy. And equally as cool.
