Wow BioWare, nice job ruining the beam-run scene (spoilers)...

To everyone who is saying the beam run was the best part of the game before, thanks for finally noticing. Where were you when it was being parodied through Marauder Shields comics and whatever else? Whatever.
Problem with the beam run is that its a gateway to nonsense.
All the stuff that follows it completely ruins any of the desperate drama and tension of this scene.
Having said that ... the first time I did it, without knowing what crap was coming... I was floored.

No you're not, I loved it and it added great dialogue to the scene. Bioware fans are extremely stubborn though and expect everything to be perfect and make sense. Some people refuse to suspend their disbelief to appreciate a well written and touching scene.
Whatever I enjoyed it and it made the EC experience that much better for me, so too bad for them.

You know how it should have happened? Your squadies get hurt and you all take cover behind a trashed Mako. You say your good byes, then you continue running. The squadies get a pick up after you go into the beam, the beam shuts off, and Harbinger leaves.
Sure, you could say "Why didn't they just shut the beam off before?", but it makes a helluva lot more sense than what we got.

Alternatively, I would have had Cortez do a quick pick up... but he didn't survive with everyone. You could have just had some random, but with everyone so entrenched it's not a surprise they picked the Normandy. Would have been way more strange to just call in some random so easily.
"Yo, it's Shepard. I know y'all busy but I need a pickup. Bring a few beer, some medigel, and some Cains while you're at it."
I'll admit I did laugh at how it just arrived super quickly, but to a player going through the game for the first time they probably wouldn't even notice.

Except... even if he does survive the crash, the shuttle's still a no-go.

Thank you for correcting me. I seem to have forgotten that tidbit. Well, then we have the answer why the Normandy had to do it.SNAKEATEN wrote...

Maybe it wasn't coming from space. I kinda figured it was maybe in the vicinity, cause all your other squad members seem to be on it, and they'd just been at the FOB with you, so presumably it had picked them up there and was taking them to a different drop point to join the ground battle somewhere else or something. So a quick detour to pick up your wounded squadmates wouldn't be THAT out of the way.antares_sublight wrote...

That was my take on it, at least.
edit: And yeah, it fixed the TELEPORTING SQUADMATES problem which was one of my biggest issues with the endings in the first place, so I'm willing to overlook the fact that it might not be completely perfect.

The addition totally messed up the pacing, but who honestly cares. It was the difference between it making zero sense, and complete sense. A necessary change in my mind.

Way I saw this was Harbinger was waiting for Shepard. It's not interested in anyone else. Why does it have such an obsession with Shepard in the first place?
In my mind right now, it's because the catalyst shares perception with the Reapers (i.e. it's looking through Harbinger's eyes), and it knows what Shepard means and what s/he is capable of in the decision chamber. Wouldn't be in the situation's best interest to blast the Normandy and its crew out of the sky, only to ****** Shepard off up there.

I loved it too. Just a daring pickup by the Normandy, whose shields could take a little Harby fire (but not too much!).

Here's a great suggestion that would not have altered the scene that much, and certainly wouldn't have been as jarringly stupid:

Agreed. The whole thing is badly paced and stupid. Totally pulled me out of the moment and ruined the narrative coherence.

Also, I want to note: the goodbyes are VERY well done. Just because I'm calling BS on the Normandy hilariously flying into a warzone out of the blue doesn't mean I can't appreciate what comes after.
It's just a shame they decided to sacrifce all logic and credibility to make it happen when it could've easily been avoided.
