I'd like to state my utmost pleasure in playing the Orzammar part of the game, mainly the deep roads.

I've found that the Deep Roads are very much like I would envision the huge system of underground highways. The networked tunnels, with their vaulted ceilings, high bridges and huges doorways were brilliantly thought and designed, and to me they transmited the feeling they should, of an army of crafters producing beautifull and functional tunnels.

The fact that they are in disrepair, and that you have to go through the side tunnels and caves only contributes more to this feeling of a fallen Empire, that left great works in it's wake.

Thank you for the Deep Roads

The Deep Roads are indeed awesome. Orzammar and the Deep Roads is my favorite part of the game I think.

and the music :)

* Crossing the bridge in running battle.

* Creepy poet tree in Branka quest.

* Being lured into the spider nest.

Louis approves ! +30

Some of those battles were among the most frustrating I've played so far.

There's a difference between "Hard but fun" and "Tearing your hair out" and BioWare, IMO, steps too often into the latter.

It's not just DA:O, either. Baldur's Gate and NWN2 did the same thing.

How hard it is probably depends on your party. If you're a blood mage, you just need to survive the first few stuns and you can start controlling everything with Blood Wound / Cone of Cold / Fireball, that type of spell. In that case it's not too hard.

I can imagine it's hell if you're not playing a super-optimized build of say, warrior.

And yes, the BG series contained some very difficult battles as well. I think most people used cheesy tactics in the BG series to survive. You could for example use Wish to rest mid-battle and regain your spells. Or if a spell was fired at you you could just leave the room before getting hit.

NWN2 was developed by Obsidian, not BioWare. On topic, I too enjoyed this part of the game immensely. That spider ambush was great. The Deep Roads also did a good job of making me feel like I was trapped in an endless maze of oppressive tunnels. When I finally left Orzammar and saw the daylight of the Frostback mountains again it felt like seeing a sunrise for the first time in years. My relief was almost palpable.

Then there was of course the whole Branka quest that was amazingly well done and creepy.

Tough, frustrating battles make you sit back and rethink your party and/or strategy.

BioWare did not make NWN2.

Obsidian did, that's why it sucked so badly.

Only fights I had some trouble with was Cauthrien without pulling her away from the archers, and the blood mage nest and bandit groups in Denerim. The Deep Roads felt balanced, atmospheric and extensive, I loved it. 8)

Sadly, Obsidian did exactly the same with Knights of the Old Republic 2. It wasn't completely horrible, but it certainly didn't live up to its predecessor.

Um no. I had full walkthroughts of BG where I didnt died even once. No chance of that in DA:O.

NWN, well, I only managed to play it once and afterwards never could raise the energy to play it again.

oh remembered my first playthrough oh how i hated that part of the game, never died so much as in the dead trenches....but man i felt like the king of the world when i managed to beat it..and then the final battle in denerim... one hit kill every single darkspawn in that area...it felt...like a compleete turnoff... i had hoped they continued the fine example as in orzimar... now on my secon playthrough i had a better build and a better party...so...than it were just to easy....

NWN2 didn't suck, NWN2 is a very good game. End of discussion. ;)
Nah, "to each his own".
To be honest, I didn't find the OC and SoZ particularly fun, but Mask of the Betrayer is the 2nd best game I've ever played (probably along with DA:O, which has grown on me).

The winner however is still by far Planescape: Torment.

NWN2 was a load of horse *beep*, it is kinda what happens when another company try to make sequels to a different companies game.

I hated that game so much.

As for the Deep Roads, I did enjoy it and is perhaps one of the funnest allies to recruit in the game. My only thing with the Deep Roads that I can say is a negative, is the complete lack of random encounters when travelling in the Deep Roads. Every dwarf in Orzammar tells you how dangerous and infested the Deep Roads in Orzammar are, yet you never get waylaid while travelling in them... it was safer to travel in the deep raods in this game than the surface. Was kinda silly.

Never had any random encounters in the Deep Roads myself at any rate, but I've only been through the game twice.

The only thing I did not like about the Deep Roads was that it was too lit up. Granted it's a game and you need to be able to see your enemies. But, in the books the deep roads were so dark and dreary the only light they had was from torches or the wizards staff. The area just did not seem dark enough to me honestly, too much ambient light. And not enough darkspawn corruption creeping on the walls either. No clue as to what I am talking about? Go read The Calling and you will understand. Image IPB

*Edited for bad spelling.  meant Deep roads not Depp roads, Jack Sparrow had no place in this game.  Image IPB

Not to tangent...okay, to tangent.

LA cut months and months of dev time off of KoTOR2 to push for a Christmas release, thus the suckage.

Indeed. That was the main complaint about the game. Lots of promise, but ultimately unpolished to a degree that it really hurts the experience. To tangent even more; this kind of thing happens a little too often. One of the very worst cases I think is Vampire: Bloodlines, which I still love despite its many, many flaws.

*is probably one of the only people in this whole forum that enjoyed KOTOR 2 more than KOTOR 1*

But to stay on topic, I really loved Orzammar, especially the Deep Roads. Easily, my favorite of the four main recruiting quests. Random encounters would have been a nice touch. More darker areas would also have been cool. It would have made for some interesting Shriek ambushes ^,^.
