I'm with you, just.  I also enjoyed NWN2 OC more than NWN1 OC.  The keep and the trial alone were worth my money in NWN2.

In terms of the Deep Roads, the poetry and Broodmother completely stole the show for me.  Brilliant.

Plus the deep roads nets you the Legion of the Dead armor! Perhaps my favorite armor look in the game, and the bonuses it has aren't bad either! If it had a fatigue reduction it would be perfect imo!

I'd like to state my utmost pleasure in playing the Orzammar part of the game, mainly the deep roads.

I've found that the Deep Roads are very much like I would envision the huge system of underground highways. The networked tunnels, with their vaulted ceilings, high bridges and huges doorways were brilliantly thought and designed, and to me they transmited the feeling they should, of an army of crafters producing beautifull and functional tunnels.

The fact that they are in disrepair, and that you have to go through the side tunnels and caves only contributes more to this feeling of a fallen Empire, that left great works in it's wake.

Thank you for the Deep Roads

I agree. That whole section was almost perfectly presented. They kept going on about how the deep roads were forgotten, no-one had been there in centuries, blah blah blah, we've heard the rhetoric before. But travelling down those roads, I thought they were every bit what the stories made them out to be.

Especially the point with Ortan Thaig...

I think the lack of random encounters in the Deep Roads is a question of game balance, otherwise you could simply travel the map back and forth until you reached you lvl cap.

I absolutely loved the wave after wave after wave of darkspawn when you meet the Legionares before the broodmother.

I was thinking that it would never end, and if I could rest enough between waves, which served it purpose in a very intense and rewarding way.

Deep Roads are the best dungeon crawl ever. Because there are LIGHTS in the Deep Roads.

Yeah, I know, dungeons are supposed to be dark and gloomy. But that means that no matter how majestic your surroundings are, you don't see too far past your nose. The scary hairy spider that comes around the corner and says "BOOOAAAAAGH!!!" gives you a start the first few times, then you just get used to him and his "BOOOAAAAAGH!!!". Then you just wish you could find an area where your eyes don't explode from straining to see what's happening on the screen.

The insane dungeon crawl was one of Drakensang's failings, you literally had to spend hours in dark tunnels fighting mobs that looked like patients of children's oncology ward. It was tedious and eye-straining.

I know that Deep Roads isn't your classic "dark, damp and dank" setting, but I'm glad that it isn't...

Some of those battles were among the most frustrating I've played so far.

There's a difference between "Hard but fun" and "Tearing your hair out" and BioWare, IMO, steps too often into the latter.

It's not just DA:O, either. Baldur's Gate and NWN2 did the same thing.

i kind of like reloading because its difficult :P  well not a million times but i think most battles can be won with a little tactic, and i like the way it is.
at least is not smash buttons repeatedly or won all batlles by brute force.

Ahh but according to the books written to be pre-quals to DA:O the deep roads are "dark, damp and dank."  All of the desrciptive text in the books states that even though they are sometimes unable to see the ceilings they are able to feel the weight of the land above pushing down on them.  I felt because of all the light I could not get this feeling.  Also in the second book they talk about the darkspawn taint covering the walls in a thick black layer which in the game can only be noticed closest to the brood mother.

Don't get me wrong it was a very fun dungeon crawl though a bit long in the tooth at times and it had a spectacular ending.  But a little less light would have been nice.  Make the caves eerier than they were.  Would have added a whole nother layer of immersion into the game.

(sorry cant edit)

And i love DeepRoads very much, i enjoyed being ambushed by spiders, have to make a run shooting by ballistas, hold a bridge from darkspawns, fighting brood mother and hive mother, and the history itself.. i love this.

(mmm i never have the problem of too much walking.. maybe its because i take a picklocker with me and have the haste spell... normally when i finish deeproads i use to think No... no more? )

The winner however is still by far Planescape: Torment.

QFT.  Although recently I'd have to say DA has kind of crept up there and is damn close.

PS:T was amazing for it's time, it's history and the immersion level was fantastic, but I agree that DA:O comes close, I think the voice acting, the "in game" animations, the varied and different origin stories all make a excelent game.

BUT the absolute feeling you get from the deep roads, of majesty gone, yet still there, of the present danger, the need to restore old glory, the "treasure hunt" of lost Taigs, again... Thank you.

My biggest angst on developers of dwarven areas is the lack of roads. You would think that dwarfs spend thousands of years building their cities and massive bridges and somehow can't master the technology of building roads between them. The quality of the Deep Road highways left me speechless. Unfortunately it was partially in ruins. Someday I would like to see an amazing dwarf city before the dwarven society is in ruins. In spite of the wonders of the Deep Roads highways they still have the typical dirt path leading out from their surface gates.

The building interiors are amazing as well, mostly stone, with little of all that gold trimming found on many other dwarven designes (ie Warhammer). When I first explored the Royal Palace bedrooms I so much wanted to live in a real one.

Funny you would mention Warhammer, there was a lot of feel for the Warhammer world, but without the trully dark setting. Templars watching over and hunting down "deviant" mages... Well I think today you can't have an original thought since most designer would have grown up with the previous generation medieval fantasy worlds.

KOTOR2 is actually quite decent with cut-content restoration mod that came out about two months ago (made waiting for DAO a lot more bearable ;)

I don't think Obsidian sucks per-se they just lack a certain male body part to stand up to LA.

On topic: I absolutely love Orzamarr and wish there was more to do there, on the other hand I can't stand Ortan Thaig while Dead Trenches are quite ok especially the Hespith part (damn how that song creeped me out first time around)
