Damn it, I must be bored.
Mass Effect 2 (never played Mas Effect all the way through, PS3 owner), That little comic book doesn't tell me much. When the geth started showing up, I was wondering why they were so feared, especially considering that I had a dancing one with my old N7 armour on the ship. The story was alright, but it's sidelined by the characters. Character developement made sure that that wasn't a huge problem. They distracted you from the threat because they're mostly likeable characters.
When the story does come up, it forces you into it (The Illusive Man wishes to speak with you). There are no real choices to make in the game except for the big one at the end. It feels like it would be of big friggin importance though right? Feels like it's the type of choice that would make or break friendships.
Who we imported into ME3 felt like a big important decision though. Which of these characters would I like to recruit again in ME3 when it comes out? Answer all of them, even Jack. Felt like the whole point of the game really. Which friendships are we going to make? Which relationships should we break? Would you make a perfect playthrough to see them again? My friend certainly didn't, he lost Miranda, but thanks to some design flaws he was hating her by the end anyway (really BioWare? How many times I tapped L2 or R2 will decide keeping my buddy's loyalty?).
Right, choices. So, I'll diverge into Dragon Age for a bit (I assume anyone reading this beat the games). We're forced into that ending, make no mistake about it. The journey and what we did with that ending were (mostly) our choice though. On my last playthrough (mostly my canon until I play it again), I led an army of Bhelen Dwarves, Werewolves, and Magisters against the darkspawn. I was a Cousland who put Alistair on the throne, killed Loghain, lost Anora, protected my city, saved the Keep, sided with the Architect, kept most of my companions, did the ritual with Morrigan, and walked into the Eluvian with her.
Plenty of choices, garanteed that not everyone will have made the same decisions as me in the same type of order. It felt like my ending, really.
Now Dragon Age II comes along. My choices led to various cameos in the game, but nothing big because it's not a direct sequel (despite the number). I don't exactly get much. Mostly because Hawke is not my character, they're a myth being told to a lady with a bad hair cut. Which leads into some forced interactions. I can't have Bethany as a squad mate for the entire game. We're forced to have her get thrown in with the mages, die, or become a Warden. No choice what so ever. She returns in Act 3 no matt but only for the last mission. I'm guessing Carter is the same way, except with Templar instead of Mage tower.
Which reminds me, there's a forced choice here too. If you're a Mage, Bethany dies. Rogue or Warrior, Carter dies. Why? Two Mage's don't make a right? Can't have two bash brothers/siblings kicking ass with swords? No option to save one or the other from the ogre attack.
Now how the Act's end. Act 1, get trapped in the deeproads because Hawke ande co don't notice Bartrand acting creepy. Act 2, Fight the Arishok. The only choice really is whether or not it's for Isabella's Honour or just because. Even then, that's basically luck based. Can't talk him down, can't talk the people of Kirkwall into accepting the Qunari (no awesome silver tongue like the Warden), just fight and kill him. Act 3, this is what annoys me the most. You kill Meredith no matter what. No matter what, she has that lyrium dagger and goes insane just like Bartrand and you have to fight her. Admittedly, slightly different reasons: Siding with Mages, believes you are siding with Mages.
Then, the game ends. If you were unfortunate enough to play the game on release, even more choice was taken away. Your LI was replaced by someone else due to some error patched later.
Though, finding out that Hawke and my Warden were missing was something that was pretty awesome. Following that with I'm Not Calling You a Liar makes for something awesome and creepy for a sequel (although another glitch on my first playthrough screwed me out of credits music, just stark silence).
On to ME3. Choice hardly seems to matter. Whether Paragon or Renegade Cerberus is now working against you, Shepard's turned in to the council for blowing up a star system or something else, Anderson isn't part of the council, you're listening to Hackett and Anderson as if they were your superiors (even if you reaccepted Spectre status), Liara's allowed onto your team, the genephage cure is carried out by someone other than Mordin (even if notes are destroyed), the geth working on giving them free minds dies, Jacob is dating someone, Shepard cares about Earth and Thessia, the human reaper shows up at the Cerberus Base, Kai Leng is bullet proof up until his actual fight, ME2 characters can't join the party, Harbinger hits you with his beam, TIM gets killed, and then there are three colours.
BioWare Chris Carter Effected us. There was no real over arching plot. We dug too deep. ME2 is proof of that. It barely had anything to do with reapers besides Harbinger, the ending, and Arrival. They panicked, and made up their story on the go when they decided on just making a trilogy for Shepard. Saw fit to end the series how they believed their Shepard would handle things instead of thinking about how fans would play. Because, apparently, both can't happen in an RPG.
Why give the illusion of choice, if it is taken away at the last minute? Why refer to the game as an RPG? Levelling up and minimal exploration? The way the series plays out, seems like a Halo/Socom combo in the end. Maybe it was meant to be an action adventure game, but BioWare only knew how to make RPG's at first.
Sorry... Been up all night, and my eyes are burning. I'm pretty sure I lost where I was going a couple of times. I'll read back on this later and try modify it if to sound more cohesive.
Probably should've posted this months ago.
