They're still the most powerful class. It's not even close.

This is essentially the crux of the matter. Despite the changes, mages still remain one of the top damage dealers (dual wielding warrior is the only build that does more, in my experience), the best crowd controllers, and the only reliable healing outside of poultice usage<snip>

My mage is the worst healer in the game.  Bar none.  Can do pretty good on CC, and that's it's primary use, and can do single-target burst DPS to eliminate any white con target if I dump all mana into damage spell sequences.  But after that one target, I'm drinking potions because I'm OOM.

Perhaps 'the crux" is that folks haven't really categorized mages when talking about their abilities.  A clear example of that is where you describe DW Warriors as having the best DPS in the game.  I'm pretty sure someone heavy on the healing lines are going to miss out on the title of DPS Champion.  But for some reason, the entire mage spell tree gets compared frequently to realistic builds from the Rogue and Warrior class trees.  Mage vs DW Warrior when comparing crowd control?  What mage build?  One with little or no CC spells is going to prove the point wrong.  See what I mean?

I had no problems with the 1.02 mage changes but do have a problem when mages are healing, they never do it in time.

I have one mage heal at < 75% and I have to use potions all the time so basically we need two mages to heal to do a prober job.

Get a second healing spell, like regeneration, it's awesome and complements heal very well.

Well, of course, you don't actually *need* a healer, because potions are very powerful, but in my experience with a single healer (and no other mage), you can get by without healing potions (unless you badly mess up and don't want to quickload, sh** happens).

It may be a problem with your "damage soaking" characters, that are not built to withstand enough punishment (more constitution is NOT the best way to go).

Try Drakensang. It might change your mind on that. :P They weren't too hot in NWN2 either.

Lol I don't think mages are "ultra-weak" since after patch, not a big difference actually...
Crushing Prison probably was one of the most OP spells, and it's not as much a nerf to mages as it is to monsters, Emissaries just love that spell.

Forcefield is actually BETTER after the nerf IMO, it lasted too long before, so when you casted it on a team mate the battle would be over and you had to wait for quite some time before he snapped out of it. Same if you casted it on an enemy.
Now the have time to lose threat/let you kill the evils that threat that ally but still he will come back to the battle. If you cast on enemy you simply disable it for some time.

Cone of Cold nerf was REALLY needed, seriously, HUGE area, REALLY HUGE, short cooldown, barely ever resisted, AND meleecrits+some spells causes instant kill. Geeh, I take back what I said about Crushing Prison, Cone of Cold IS the best spell.

I like the balance in 1.02. It was needed, mages dominated too much, they still do, but slightly less now and those spells are less OP.
