Clearly Catalyst is using Shepard's mind somehow, else how could it appear in the form of Vent Boy? Well, I can't see why Shepard would be more broken up by Vent Boy's death than the sacrifice of the Virmire Deceased. From Shepard's vantage point, the memory is still very fresh, it hasn't been two and a half years for Shepard, it's been less than a year due to the time she spent dead (ugh, stupid plot device is stupid, but whatever).
So what if instead of shimmery ghost kid, Shepard found herself taking to Kaidan or Ashley? Would that have made the scene more impactful? Especially if some more information was given regarding Catalyst's actions—or lack thereof—during the course of the first two games?
Granted, I know this is a "too late now" hypothetical scenario, I just wonder if the character would have seemed like less of an asspull if it wore a familiar face.
What if Catalyst had taken the form of the Virmire Deceased?

That would have made the ending a lot more interesting than the child. I felt no connection to the child.
Though in ME1, I didn't feel a big connection leaving one of my guys behind. Could be that ashley shot wrex, and I loved wrex, and said screw her and left.

Yeah, but at least you knew Ashley. I think even if you hated Ashley, the scene would have had more energy. I think it could have been quite trippy. Missed opportunity, I know that both Kaidan and Ashley's voice actors could have delivered the goods WAY better than Vent Boy's voice actor.
Heck, I think even if the simulacrum shifted between different deceased characters, it would have had a lot more interest, especially if it was variable-dependent. Having Anderson and TIM as possible mouthpieces could have been cool too, since they had both died only moments before.
