How does the Witcher compare to DA

Point being, I'd like to take a break from DAO after I finish it. I'd like some time to pass before I play through the content again even as a different class.
So is the Witcher as a temporary replacement for DAO?

For what its worth, I rank the Witcher as a 8.5/10 and DA as a 7/10.

Better story, Darker Content, Worse Gameplay. You're also playing a set character instead of one you make. You don't have a party in the Witcher, you do in DA. Those should be the main differences.

yup, I agree in general with this statement.
and yeah I do recommend getting the new release of the witcher!

Try Witcher on hard and go magic, i've found it much more entertaining than melee.

The only redeeming aspect is the Alchemy system, which adds some much needed spice into the combat.

I'm loving DAO. I'm looking for something after my first playthrough. I went back and restarted a new mage after being about 1/2 way through the story line and missing the unlock for blood mage and Arcane Warrior. It's still fun but I am looking forward to getting to the point where I'm not repeating the content.

I know I'm asking a stupid question but does it have to be an RPG replacement? I've never played the witcher but I really liked Star Wars: Force Unleashed. The story for that is really good and it's fun. Some complaints was that it was repetitive or got old fast but it wasn't for me.
Mass Effect is another good game.
I heard Demon Souls was a REALLY good game so you might wanna check that out

Non enhanced edition = bad. REAL bad.
Enhanced edition = Good, REAL good.

You definitely want the improved edition, but if you pick up the standard edition cheap then you can get the free update from the website.

Conversations and characters are relatively well-developed, and the choices you make will determine your standing with various factions throughout the course of the game. There's more real moral ambiguity and more consequence in the Witcher than in DAO, from what I've seen.
Although you can equip axes and daggers, the game really expects you to be proficient with both a steel sword (for humans) and a silver sword (for monsters). There are three fighting styles, but for any given opponent one or more may be ineffective, requiring you to improve your skills in all areas. The business of melee fighting quickly becomes a chore, and, depending on how much weight you put on it, may be a deal-breaker.
Luckily, you can develop your ability to brew potions and cast a few spells, which greatly reduces the monotony of swinging your sword about.

I liked Witcher. Was thinking of getting the re-release which I hear makes it even better.
Also - you may want to try Drakensang if you haven't already played it. Its sort of similar to DAO.

you can buy the un-enhanced version ( which is possibly cheaper the ther re-release) & go on the witcher site to patch it up & download a couple of quests

I think that the enchanced version could only be had as a collectors edition. DvD making off, 2 CD game soundtrack, 3 books in it (a small story from the world of witcher of what happened before the original opening video and a little after, instruction booklet and a full guide of the game). Thats the one i have anyway and its worth every penny.
The original game does not have all these cool stuff (the soundtrack alone is worth the cash) so i would easily vouch for the Enhanced version as it is. Latest official patch also removes the DRM protection so you can play the game without the disk in your drive.

VERY Brief highlight
Assuming you have a system that can run with high detail - beautiful graphics
The game mechanics involving combat are a different. A lot more clicking on targets and timing of those clicks is especially important for combos. Where as NWN2 or DA you click on a target and your character uses default attack, the Witchers involves more "participation" in combat. However, it is much more than mindless clicking as doing so will actually hinder your attacks. That said, I believe it was done in way that enhances the games. It may take a little getting used too though.
The Witcher, is more like NWN2 in terms of game world...your character moves from one area to another via cutscenes or transitions. HOWEVER, that does don't mean the game is overly linear. Most major quests have multiple ways to complete and consequences that do impact game going forward. It's quite possible to "weave" through quests, meaning you could actually pickup/start a quest at different points in the quest's story line. So it's not simply a straight progression of A to B to C. You may start at B, get to C, C may lead to D and E, but you only get to E by doing A first; If you progress to D, you may get additional quests or options not available if you chose E. (Confused yet?.) Your choices have a major impact in story's progression and once most of these choices are made, they can't be undone.
The main character can not be "changed" and appearance is not "customizable" for the most part however you can customize skills as the story progresses through leveling up, and you do definitely get the impression your character skill is "growing" or "expanding"
Overall, I think it is an outstanding game and would be a worthy game to add to your collection. There are some folks who may argue that that DA is temporary replacement for the Witcher
