I'm loving DAO. I'm looking for something after my first playthrough. I went back and restarted a new mage after being about 1/2 way through the story line and missing the unlock for blood mage and Arcane Warrior. It's still fun but I am looking forward to getting to the point where I'm not repeating the content.

Point being, I'd like to take a break from DAO after I finish it. I'd like some time to pass before I play through the content again even as a different class.

So is the Witcher as a temporary replacement for DAO?

Better story, Darker Content, Worse Gameplay. You're also playing a set character instead of one you make. You don't have a party in the Witcher, you do in DA. Those should be the main differences.

For what its worth, I rank the Witcher as a 8.5/10 and DA as a 7/10.

I liked the Witcher. Make sure to get the re-release, apparently has better VO and is much less buggy.

So similar and yet so wildly different. Lets just say that the witcher is one of the best PC western RPGs. Its not for everyone, which game is anyway, but it has all these things that make for a great RPG experience. Just make sure you get the enhanced version.

I liked The Witcher, but i wouldn't necessarily compare it to this here game.

Try Witcher on hard and go magic, i've found it much more entertaining than melee.

Loved the Witcher enhanced edition, personally. I'd urge anyone to play it.

The biggest flaw in The Witcher is its absolutely terrible combat. Hyper-repetetive and a worthless specialization tree. There are a total of 4-5 spells and 3 fighting syles, all of which are equally boring to use. There is a "combo/chain" system but it's very shallow and mindless.

The only redeeming aspect is the Alchemy system, which adds some much needed spice into the combat.

I agree the witcher is a great game. Combat is completly real time and based on combos which I like others may not. Story seems to be just as good if not better. So far I would say it is a harder game than DA but I haven't gotten farther than the mage origin in this game...which was not nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be.

I know I'm asking a stupid question but does it have to be an RPG replacement?  I've never played the witcher but I really liked Star Wars: Force Unleashed.  The story for that is really good and it's fun.  Some complaints was that it was repetitive or got old fast but it wasn't for me.

Mass Effect is another good game.

I heard Demon Souls was a REALLY good game so you might wanna check that out

Witcher is a terrible game and a sorry excuse for an RPG. DA is a masterpiece.

Loved the Witcher. I still partially blame it for the reason I didn't enjoy Mass Effect 1 all that much. Much like I will probably have to blame Dragon Age for why I'm not going to enjoy Mass Effect 2 all that much ;.;

DA and The Witcher are very different games, so different it is difficult to even find places to compare them. Don't get me wrong, they are both excellent games and I would recommend both to anyone, but don't play The Witcher expecting something like DA.

You definitely want the improved edition, but if you pick up the standard edition cheap then you can get the free update from the website.

you can buy the un-enhanced version ( which is possibly cheaper the ther re-release) & go on the witcher site to patch it up & download a couple of quests

The Witcher is original and rewarding, and I think offers a deeper role-playing experience at the expense of a shallower combat system.
Conversations and characters are relatively well-developed, and the choices you make will determine your standing with various factions throughout the course of the game. There's more real moral ambiguity and more consequence in the Witcher than in DAO, from what I've seen.
Although you can equip axes and daggers, the game really expects you to be proficient with both a steel sword (for humans) and a silver sword (for monsters). There are three fighting styles, but for any given opponent one or more may be ineffective, requiring you to improve your skills in all areas. The business of melee fighting quickly becomes a chore, and, depending on how much weight you put on it, may be a deal-breaker.
Luckily, you can develop your ability to brew potions and cast a few spells, which greatly reduces the monotony of swinging your sword about.

I liked Witcher. Was thinking of getting the re-release which I hear makes it even better.

Also - you may want to try Drakensang if you haven't already played it. Its sort of similar to DAO.

I think that the enchanced version could only be had as a collectors edition. DvD making off, 2 CD game soundtrack, 3 books in it (a small story from the world of witcher of what happened before the original opening video and a little after, instruction booklet and a full guide of the game). Thats the one i have anyway and its worth every penny.

The original game does not have all these cool stuff (the soundtrack alone is worth the cash) so i would easily vouch for the Enhanced version as it is. Latest official patch also removes the DRM  protection so you can play the game without the disk in your drive.

I just bought the Witcher for $5 at Book and Music Exchange. Totally using it to take a very small break from DA after I finish my first character.

Get the enhanced edition, it's an awesome game. Much more original story, I recommend playing an alchemy focused char to make combat more interactive though.

My personal opinion: The Witcher is worth the purchase if you like RPG games. I bought the Witcher more on impulse and have not been disappointed. Overall, it's probably one of the best RPG games out there...though it's a bit different than say DA, NWN(2,) etc

VERY Brief highlight

Assuming you have a system that can run with high detail - beautiful graphics

The game mechanics involving combat are a different. A lot more clicking on targets and timing of those clicks is especially important for combos. Where as NWN2 or DA you click on a target and your character uses default attack, the Witchers involves more "participation" in combat. However, it is much more than mindless clicking as doing so will actually hinder your attacks. That said, I believe it was done in way that enhances the games. It may take a little getting used too though.

The Witcher, is more like NWN2 in terms of game world...your character moves from one area to another via cutscenes or transitions. HOWEVER, that does don't mean the game is overly linear. Most major quests have multiple ways to complete and consequences that do impact game going forward. It's quite possible to "weave" through quests, meaning you could actually pickup/start a quest at different points in the quest's story line. So it's not simply a straight progression of A to B to C. You may start at B, get to C, C may lead to D and E, but you only get to E by doing A first; If you progress to D, you may get additional quests or options not available if you chose E. (Confused yet?.) Your choices have a major impact in story's progression and once most of these choices are made, they can't be undone.

The main character can not be "changed" and appearance is not "customizable" for the most part however you can customize skills as the story progresses through leveling up, and you do definitely get the impression your character skill is "growing" or "expanding"

Overall, I think it is an outstanding game and would be a worthy game to add to your collection. There are some folks who may argue that that DA is temporary replacement for the Witcher :)

Witcher = Much better story. Decisions that really and actually affect how the story develops in drastic ways. Much better game world. Same quality graphics. Much more adult themed

Dragon Age = Much better combat system
