So similar and yet so wildly different. Lets just say that the witcher is one of the best PC western RPGs. Its not for everyone, which game is anyway, but it has all these things that make for a great RPG experience. Just make sure you get the enhanced version.

Completely agree, a very good game in its own right.

Better story, Darker Content, Worse Gameplay. You're also playing a set character instead of one you make. You don't have a party in the Witcher, you do in DA. Those should be the main differences.

For what its worth, I rank the Witcher as a 8.5/10 and DA as a 7/10.

yup, I agree in general with this statement.
and yeah I do recommend getting the new release of the witcher!

Generally Agree too, apart from the story, DA:O has a better story (at least for my taste :P) I'd actually rank both games (Witcher Enhanced mind you) at about 8.8-9.1/10. Provided you get the Witcher Enhanced that is :)

I like the Witcher after they patched the game. It is far more Diablo like while DAO is more BG like.

Both are good games, both have good stories, and frankly the different style of combat and play of the Witcher makes it a nice break from most RPGs.

I loved The Witcher, even more than Dragon Age, and I REALLY like Dragon Age.

Your character is voiced in The Witcher, which I find makes a big difference. My Dragon Age COMPANIONS feel like real people, but my DA CHARACTER feels like a cipher.  Geralt (your character in The Witcher), on the other hand, feels very real.

Combat is quite different in the two games, since you control a single player in The Witcher, not a party.  That means that combat goes a lot faster in The Witcher, with a lot fewer decisions to make (but not as simple as in, say, Diablo; it's more complicated than that).  Those who love the combat in DA will probably find combat in The Witcher to be too simple.  Those who find the combat in DA to involve a little more micromanaging than they appreciate will probably find combat in The Witcher to be pleasantly streamlined; it all depends on what you like.

I thought The Witcher's story was better, more involving, less generic.  I also thought that it was a darker story and that the choices had interesting consequences.  I liked the romantic relationships better in Dragon Age; I've gotten genuinely attached to Alistair, and I was quite sorry to have to pass up Zevran.  Geralt does have a choice of romantic relationships in The Witcher, but the relationships are nowhere near as well done as they are in DA.

As a female player, I was a little leery about having to play a male character in The Witcher, but it turned out not to be a drawback at all.  Geralt is so much his own person that playing him was a pleasure, though I usually thought of the team of Geralt and me as "we" -- and as a team -- rather than "I."

I love Dragon Age.  I'm on my second play-through, and I've pre-ordered the expansion pack.  But The Witcher is my all-time favorite game.

Is the witcher rise of the white wolf cancelled or postponed?

I remember seeing it on HMV/Amazon late last year, and then poof... gone.

Assassins of kings seems interesting.

Won't be anywhere near as good as DA:O though I bet.

I remember playing the witcher way back around when it came out, and I was bored to tears and had an awe full time when I managed to make it to a certain swamp, I gave up after that XD

not sure what has changed then, I'm in love with DOA though, I imagine it just comes down to taste though.

Last I heard The Witcher 2 was still being produced, but that was months ago, haven't really been keeping up with it.

Edit :  www.youtube.com/watch  there's a link to an Alpha build video if anyone hasn't seen it.

ah..the witcher. :) LOVE it! the atmosphere with the great soundtrack is fantastic (personally, i like the soundtrack of the witcher much much more than some orchestraic soundtrack - got tired of it, was oversused in too many games). anyway, funny that many people started to miss the witcher again - i´ll definately go for the witcher 2. :)

Witcher = Single player........DA = Party based. So how can the two really be compared?

Or am I missing something?

I enjoyed the Witcher and I would say it is a good buy; however I thought that DAO was definetly the better game.

To be honest you don't really need a party to beat DAO.  Those people are basically there to drive the story along.

I tried The Witcher Enhanced demo and was blown away by the graphics but hated the game. The story is retarded (just like The Witcher movie; never read the books) and I don't like being forced to play Geralt, a cardboard anti-hero. Plus combat is too hard! Try clicking on a tiny cursor to attack and then wait for flashing icons to do finishing moves. Repetitive is too kind a word. There is zero fun to be had. I couldn't even get past the first fight I was so bored. Too bad because I really wanted to like this game and see all the nudity and gore but it's not worth the trouble.

Then you wate it if you didn't read books. Those are the escence of everything and it was what started it all. Movie sucks.

I think Witcher 2 will be really a hit. Why? I happen to know that Geralt will be able to jump over things on ground and push off cif his enemies and some other stuff.

I thought also that we've been under the charm of advertisment if talking about DAO. There was so much noise about it. And we know, Witcher is better game because even without so much noise it's loved and sell preatty well. I recomend Polish vocal because as it happpens in other games original version is often better. Thas why I'm playing DAO in eanglish not polish. All interesten in wither should read books.

Actually both games are single player only.
Witcher is focused on playing and developing a single protagonist, while DAO is party based.

Single player vs multiplayer is a wholly different discussion, and I guess we would have to have the NWN games join the ring...

I loved the combat of the Witcher. All it required was a mouse(and maybe a few hotkeys) and yet it was far more complex than the usual CRPG system where you just click and watch your character do the same combat animations again and again, with the routine broken only by periodic special spells/talents. I was disappointed that Bioware followed this traditional system for Dragon Age. It would have been nice to see varied combos instead of repeating swing/hack/shoot animations.

And the story... well, the Witcher had a better story with Geralt being actually able to choose factions and there being no generic 'Evil' side(like the Darkspawn) even at the end. Bioware was half-hearted in their morally ambiguous approach; in many cases the quest choices could clearly be divided into good/noble, bad/selfish and neutral rather than the Witcher where. But Dragon Age offers a lot more variety with its origins, and that's something I'm loving right now.

The Witcher is different for some people, when I played The Witcher I only went through a little bit of the game then the really terrible combat system made me stop playing.

It doesn't compare.

The Witcher has an amazing story, darker elements, you play a character that's set in stone (no customization).

Only downside I have found is the gameplay, after seeing the Witcher 2 leaked preview I find the fighting very lacking, good... but lacking.

In other words, if you're bored of DA, play the Witcher, but expect surprises, good and bad.

I haven't played The Witcher yet, but I love, love, love the short stories and books (I didn't want the game to disappoint me so I stayed away from it).

It's sad that only two of the books have been translated into English, Andrzej Sapkowski is an amazing writer.

I may have to get the game after reading the reviews here.

The witcher is great. Both games are similar it that they have a dark fantasy setting and explore issues like race, class, terrorism and exploitation. In the Witcher you also get moral choices.

You can only play one Geralt of Rivia in the Witcher but he is a fascinating character. Two swords silver: for monsters and the other [steel] that is for monsters too...

They're close Witcher 9.5/10 DA 9.7/10
