I loved
The Witcher, even more than
Dragon Age, and I REALLY like
Dragon Age.
Your character is voiced in
The Witcher, which I find makes a big difference. My
Dragon Age COMPANIONS feel like real people, but my
DA CHARACTER feels like a cipher. Geralt (your character in
The Witcher), on the other hand, feels very real.
Combat is quite different in the two games, since you control a single player in
The Witcher, not a party. That means that combat goes a lot faster in
The Witcher, with a lot fewer decisions to make (but not as simple as in, say,
Diablo; it's more complicated than that). Those who love the combat in
DA will probably find combat in
The Witcher to be too simple. Those who find the combat in
DA to involve a little more micromanaging than they appreciate will probably find combat in
The Witcher to be pleasantly streamlined; it all depends on what you like.
I thought
The Witcher's story was better, more involving, less generic. I also thought that it was a darker story and that the choices had interesting consequences. I liked the romantic relationships better in
Dragon Age; I've gotten genuinely attached to Alistair, and I was quite sorry to have to pass up Zevran. Geralt does have a choice of romantic relationships in
The Witcher, but the relationships are nowhere near as well done as they are in
DA.
As a female player, I was a little leery about having to play a male character in
The Witcher, but it turned out not to be a drawback at all. Geralt is so much his own person that playing him was a pleasure, though I usually thought of the team of Geralt and me as "we" -- and as a team -- rather than "I."
I love
Dragon Age. I'm on my second play-through, and I've pre-ordered the expansion pack. But
The Witcher is my all-time favorite game.
