My personal opinion: The Witcher is worth the purchase if you like RPG games. I bought the Witcher more on impulse and have not been disappointed. Overall, it's probably one of the best RPG games out there...though it's a bit different than say DA, NWN(2,) etc

VERY Brief highlight

Assuming you have a system that can run with high detail - beautiful graphics

The game mechanics involving combat are a different. A lot more clicking on targets and timing of those clicks is especially important for combos. Where as NWN2 or DA you click on a target and your character uses default attack, the Witchers involves more "participation" in combat. However, it is much more than mindless clicking as doing so will actually hinder your attacks. That said, I believe it was done in way that enhances the games. It may take a little getting used too though.

The Witcher, is more like NWN2 in terms of game world...your character moves from one area to another via cutscenes or transitions. HOWEVER, that does don't mean the game is overly linear. Most major quests have multiple ways to complete and consequences that do impact game going forward. It's quite possible to "weave" through quests, meaning you could actually pickup/start a quest at different points in the quest's story line. So it's not simply a straight progression of A to B to C. You may start at B, get to C, C may lead to D and E, but you only get to E by doing A first; If you progress to D, you may get additional quests or options not available if you chose E. (Confused yet?.) Your choices have a major impact in story's progression and once most of these choices are made, they can't be undone.

The main character can not be "changed" and appearance is not "customizable" for the most part however you can customize skills as the story progresses through leveling up, and you do definitely get the impression your character skill is "growing" or "expanding"

Overall, I think it is an outstanding game and would be a worthy game to add to your collection. There are some folks who may argue that that DA is temporary replacement for the Witcher :)

Saves me the trouble of writing a review, it so well sums up my opinion...and put here in case anyone goes to end of thread and missed this great post.

Witcher 1 was a good game... flawed but good. Nowadays, I'd treat it only as an introduction to Witcher 2 which is a masterpiece.

The only thing wrong with Witcher 1 is the combat system with the FCR mod though the combat becomes extremely challenging and tactical and the game can omgwtfpwn you..which I like though.  Witcher 2 though on the other hand is an excellent sequel really is amazing.

I much preferred Origins to the Witcher but the sequel is better than DA2 IMO. Origins is still one of my favourite RPGs :D

So is the Witcher as a temporary replacement for DAO?

I liked Witcher. Was thinking of getting the re-release which I hear makes it even better.

Also - you may want to try Drakensang if you haven't already played it. Its sort of similar to DAO.

I installed and am playing DAO. Is there anything that I must dl and add to the game since the disc was released?

Well I have started the Witcher and so far I'm pretty uninspired.

I guess I should say what I see in DA:O. Utterly fantastic characters, story lines, personalities. But the voice actor choice is of the highest quality, the lines are good, and I have noticed that they layer sound very well, so voices, with background sound, and a little music makes a more immersed feel.

The combat is just like I want it. Its a pause, decide what you want to do , choose your your special power, then the target and click.. off you go.. I ain't an FPS kind of player, with quick reflexes, it just does nothing for me.

The movement system is behind the character , WASD key.. no nonsense.

Now with the Witcher.

Voice Over is rubbish, it ain't average, its just rubbish. The voices are those cheesy voices that you get advertising bad action movies. The lines are trite and staged and just don't feel natural. Also voice sound doesn't feel like its coming from the character's mouth just out of the ether. This is THE worst thing about the game IMHO

The movement is awkward with the screen not rotating smoothly enough if you don't use OTS view, and if you do, then combat isn't as clear and you lose the mouse point for clicking on the icon. Again just horrible....

Combat... chain clicking at the right time, its just not my cup of tea. The first boss Saviola (think that's spelt right) took ages as you ran from one side to the other clicking the chain attack. I was bored doing this..

What the Witcher has is the most awesome back-drops. The scenery is fantastic. A grim dark world, that has a more realistic feel to it than the setting of Ferelden.

I can't actually say as yet if the story in the Witcher is good or bad..cos I find the voice acting almost embarrassing. that I struggle to follow the story.

I so wanted the Witcher to be awesome, to give me something new after 7 re-runs of DA:O in a row. but at the moment I really can't find that much to cheer about :(
