In an early quest, Trials of A Grey Warden > Korcari Wilds, I fought the wolves, found the body, saved the guardsman, then fought my first darkspawn. None of it was hard. Then I turned right and ran into a camp of darkspawn. They've wiped out my party twice! The IGN walkthrough says "it should be a fight you will easily survive."

What's going on? My party is struggling to kill the melee darkspawn while the darkspawn archers just blaze away.

My PC is the dwarf commoner warrior, dual-wield. I have 3 other party members. Everybody has all the gear they need.  My guys die with several mobs left at full health.

Try to approach them from behind the litlle hill that is on the right side (if that's the place i think it is) and draw their attention with a bow. Basically you want to make the archers come up to you so you can engage them without much running.

Both the Wilds and the Tower of Ishal are a lot easier if you make sure everyone has a ranged attack. If you can pick off outliers one or two at a time, before most of a group of enemies know you're there, things go much more easily.

So you haven't gotten to the Hurlock Emissary that says hello via FIREBALL? He'll lure you across a bridge loaded with traps just to hit you with another fireball. That's one of the more annoying fights in the early game. The grease trap + exploding barrel in the Tower of Ishal is also one, but it is easily avoided once you know it is there.

You can easily take him out before he even gets past the bridge if you rush him. I only play rouges to be honest and one in stealth will get you within striking range for a stun before he notices you.

I was wondering about needed to create two weapon sets for each character. I'll try that, thanks.

Isn't it difficult to get the party to stand still with ranged weapons?  Will I have to change their tactical settings often?

If it comes down to it (such as their tactics are too useful to completely override), you can (H)old the party and manually make someone pull.

Self: Health < 75% - use weakest health poultice.

Problem solved.

Stop using a guide and start thinking.

It helps.

man i have feeling most people complicate this game for themselves most of time by not using tactics!

I approve of this tactic!

To make it work -

Mage Staffs are already ranged
Fighters/Rogues should have a Longbow equiped.

When you see the enemy (you should be able to see them before the combat starts) make sure everyone is using ranged, Select the group of characters and click 'attack' on the nearest enemy.  All of your characters then run up to maximum range and start firing.  Once combat starts click the enemy again to make sure everyone is attacking (they sometimes stop after the first volley) and wait until any charging enemy are close so you can engage with proper melee.

This tactic really makes Korcari Wilds and the Deep Roads VERY easy!  Many fights can be won by enticing a couple enemy to attack at a time which your party SHOULD be able to handle easily.

You could try and focus on the Hurlocks first then the Gremlocks. That worked for me with my two handed warrior.

I would go with <50%.. <75% seems high for that early in the game..
