In cities there should be back buildings like the spots in back of the alienage in DAO.  I don't know why they had to remove areas like that in the alienage of DA2 but it makes it more interesting.

There were some backalleys, though for some reason they were all underground, and they were less like alleys and more like plain old deadends.

The "alienage" in DA2 was definitely lacking, and hardly felt like a community. I'm not sure if DA2 needed more back alleys, but it could have used a more lively alienage.

I remember wondering the other day if Kirkwall elves had access to backalleys that humans or dwarves knew nothing about, since they have to slink around the city to get from home to work, duck the guards, avoid hate crimes, get away with crimes of their own and so on; especially in a large ancient labyrinth of a city like Kirkwall. (If there are no secret alleys that past slaves used escape, then I'm cursed.) Maybe there are some alleys that Hawke simply knew nothing about because s/he was human. Hmm...

A better alienage is definitely in order for future games though. All the alleys and tunnels and apartments in DA:O illustrated the overpopulated yet close and intimate community of the Alienage. The tiny, clean, under-populated hovel in DA2 didn't quite give the impression the devs seemed to want to bestow.

To have "back" alleys, it is implied that there is a front of something.

The problem with Kirkwall is that there were only maybe seven buildings that you could go into. The rest was all just for show, a maze to make getting from Point A to Point B take a little more time and stretch out what would have been, arguably, only enough content for an Expansion.

Well the designs in DA2 seem a little simpler and there aren't as many people to talk to.  I wonder why they made it less complex?

I don't think there were that many building to go into in DAO either.  Were there?

There still should have been more apartments for people to stay at since it's a city.  I sort of liked darktown if that is what you are talking about.

They made the game less complex so they could save money and release the game a.s.a.p.

DA2 had a very short development cycle, and was rushed out the door to capitalize on Origins' success when the game wasn't ready. Bioware seem to be putting more effort into DA3, so hopefully it turns into the quality sequel that DA2 wasn't and saves this franchise, which I am a fan of.

Don't you think it was more lack of caring than a lack of time?

Edit:  they did have a tight schdule to fit into.

Yeah, the DA2 alienage lacked complexity and only had two building open, Merrils's place and where you get the Fenris ambush.

What did you think of the trees in both Alienages?
